  1. Now when He had spoken, a Pharisee asked Him to have lunch with him; and He went in, and reclined at the table.
  2. When the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised that He had not first ceremonially washed before the meal.
  3. But the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but inside of you, you are full of robbery and wickedness.
  4. "You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also?
  5. "But give that which is within as charity, and then all things are clean for you.
  1. When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.
  2. But the Pharisee, noticing that Jesus did not first wash before the meal, was surprised.
  3. Then the Lord said to him, "Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.
  4. You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?
  5. But give what is inside the dish to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.
  1. "But woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithe of mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and yet disregard justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.
  2. "Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the chief seats in the synagogues and the respectful greetings in the market places.
  3. "Woe to you! For you are like concealed tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it."
  4. One of the lawyers said to Him in reply, "Teacher, when You say this, You insult us too."
  5. But He said, "Woe to you lawyers as well! For you weigh men down with burdens hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
  1. "Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
  2. "Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.
  3. "Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing it."
  4. One of the experts in the law answered him, "Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also."
  5. Jesus replied, "And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.
  1. "Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them.
  2. "So you are witnesses and approve the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs.
  3. "For this reason also the wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and some they will persecute,
  4. so that the blood of all the prophets, shed since the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,
  5. from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged against this generation.'
  1. "Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them.
  2. So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.
  3. Because of this, God in his wisdom said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.'
  4. Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world,
  5. from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.
  1. "Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering."
  2. When He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to question Him closely on many subjects,
  3. plotting against Him to catch Him in something He might say.
  1. "Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering."
  2. When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions,
  3. waiting to catch him in something he might say.

  1. Under these circumstances, after so many thousands of people had gathered together that they were stepping on one another, He began saying to His disciples first of all, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
  2. "But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.
  3. "Accordingly, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed upon the housetops.
  4. "I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do.
  5. "But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him!
  1. Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
  2. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.
  3. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.
  4. "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.
  5. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.
  1. "Are not five sparrows sold for two cents? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God.
  2. "Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.
  3. "And I say to you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will confess him also before the angels of God;
  4. but he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.
  5. "And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him.
  1. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.
  2. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
  3. "I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God.
  4. But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God.
  5. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
  1. "When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say;
  2. for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say."
  1. "When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,
  2. for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."
