- After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias).
- A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs which He was performing on those who were sick.
- Then Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples.
- Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.
- Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?"
|
- Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias),
- and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the miraculous signs he had performed on the sick.
- Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.
- The Jewish Passover Feast was near.
- When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?"
|
- This He was saying to test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do.
- Philip answered Him, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little."
- One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him,
- "There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people?"
- Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." Now there was much grass in the place So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
|
- He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
- Philip answered him, "Eight months' wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!"
- Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up,
- "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?"
- Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them.
|
- Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted.
- When they were filled, He said to His disciples, "Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost."
- So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.
- Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, "This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world."
- So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.
|
- Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
- When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted."
- So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
- After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world."
- Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
|
- Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
- and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea to Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
- The sea began to be stirred up because a strong wind was blowing.
- Then, when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were frightened.
- But He said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid."
|
- When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,
- where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them.
- A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough.
- When they had rowed three or three and a half miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were terrified.
- But he said to them, "It is I; don't be afraid."
|
- So they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
|
- Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
