  1. Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek, while the Israelites were camping by the spring which is in Jezreel.
  2. And the lords of the Philistines were proceeding on by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men were proceeding on in the rear with Achish.
  3. Then the commanders of the Philistines said, "What are these Hebrews doing here?" And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, "Is this not David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, who has been with me these days, or rather these years, and I have found no fault in him from the day he deserted to me to this day?"
  4. But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him, and the commanders of the Philistines said to him, "Make the man go back, that he may return to his place where you have assigned him, and do not let him go down to battle with us, or in the battle he may become an adversary to us. For with what could this man make himself acceptable to his lord? Would it not be with the heads of these men?
  5. "Is this not David, of whom they sing in the dances, saying, 'Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands'?"
  1. The Philistines gathered all their forces at Aphek, and Israel camped by the spring in Jezreel.
  2. As the Philistine rulers marched with their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men were marching at the rear with Achish.
  3. The commanders of the Philistines asked, "What about these Hebrews?" Achish replied, "Is this not David, who was an officer of Saul king of Israel? He has already been with me for over a year, and from the day he left Saul until now, I have found no fault in him."
  4. But the Philistine commanders were angry with him and said, "Send the man back, that he may return to the place you assigned him. He must not go with us into battle, or he will turn against us during the fighting. How better could he regain his master's favor than by taking the heads of our own men?
  5. Isn't this the David they sang about in their dances: " 'Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands'?"
  1. Then Achish called David and said to him, "As the LORD lives, you have been upright, and your going out and your coming in with me in the army are pleasing in my sight; for I have not found evil in you from the day of your coming to me to this day. Nevertheless, you are not pleasing in the sight of the lords.
  2. "Now therefore return and go in peace, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines."
  3. David said to Achish, "But what have I done? And what have you found in your servant from the day when I came before you to this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?"
  4. But Achish replied to David, "I know that you are pleasing in my sight, like an angel of God; nevertheless the commanders of the Philistines have said, 'He must not go up with us to the battle.'
  5. "Now then arise early in the morning with the servants of your lord who have come with you, and as soon as you have arisen early in the morning and have light, depart."
  1. So Achish called David and said to him, "As surely as the LORD lives, you have been reliable, and I would be pleased to have you serve with me in the army. From the day you came to me until now, I have found no fault in you, but the rulers don't approve of you.
  2. Turn back and go in peace; do nothing to displease the Philistine rulers."
  3. "But what have I done?" asked David. "What have you found against your servant from the day I came to you until now? Why can't I go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?"
  4. Achish answered, "I know that you have been as pleasing in my eyes as an angel of God; nevertheless, the Philistine commanders have said, 'He must not go up with us into battle.'
  5. Now get up early, along with your master's servants who have come with you, and leave in the morning as soon as it is light."
  1. So David arose early, he and his men, to depart in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
  1. So David and his men got up early in the morning to go back to the land of the Philistines, and the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

  1. Then it happened when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had made a raid on the Negev and on Ziklag, and had overthrown Ziklag and burned it with fire;
  2. and they took captive the women and all who were in it, both small and great, without killing anyone, and carried them off and went their way.
  3. When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire, and their wives and their sons and their daughters had been taken captive.
  4. Then David and the people who were with him lifted their voices and wept until there was no strength in them to weep.
  5. Now David's two wives had been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite.
  1. David and his men reached Ziklag on the third day. Now the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag and burned it,
  2. and had taken captive the women and all who were in it, both young and old. They killed none of them, but carried them off as they went on their way.
  3. When David and his men came to Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive.
  4. So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep.
  5. David's two wives had been captured--Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel.
  1. Moreover David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, for all the people were embittered, each one because of his sons and his daughters But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.
  2. Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, "Please bring me the ephod." So Abiathar brought the ephod to David.
  3. David inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I pursue this band? Shall I overtake them?" And He said to him, "Pursue, for you will surely overtake them, and you will surely rescue all."
  4. So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those left behind remained.
  5. But David pursued, he and four hundred men, for two hundred who were too exhausted to cross the brook Besor remained behind.
  1. David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.
  2. Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, "Bring me the ephod." Abiathar brought it to him,
  3. and David inquired of the LORD, "Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?" "Pursue them," he answered. "You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue."
  4. David and the six hundred men with him came to the Besor Ravine, where some stayed behind,
  5. for two hundred men were too exhausted to cross the ravine. But David and four hundred men continued the pursuit.
  1. Now they found an Egyptian in the field and brought him to David, and gave him bread and he ate, and they provided him water to drink.
  2. They gave him a piece of fig cake and two clusters of raisins, and he ate; then his spirit revived. For he had not eaten bread or drunk water for three days and three nights.
  3. David said to him, "To whom do you belong? And where are you from?" And he said, "I am a young man of Egypt, a servant of an Amalekite; and my master left me behind when I fell sick three days ago.
  4. "We made a raid on the Negev of the Cherethites, and on that which belongs to Judah, and on the Negev of Caleb, and we burned Ziklag with fire."
  5. Then David said to him, "Will you bring me down to this band?" And he said, "Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring you down to this band."
  1. They found an Egyptian in a field and brought him to David. They gave him water to drink and food to eat-
  2. part of a cake of pressed figs and two cakes of raisins. He ate and was revived, for he had not eaten any food or drunk any water for three days and three nights.
  3. David asked him, "To whom do you belong, and where do you come from?" He said, "I am an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me when I became ill three days ago.
  4. We raided the Negev of the Kerethites and the territory belonging to Judah and the Negev of Caleb. And we burned Ziklag."
  5. David asked him, "Can you lead me down to this raiding party?" He answered, "Swear to me before God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master, and I will take you down to them."
  1. When he had brought him down, behold, they were spread over all the land, eating and drinking and dancing because of all the great spoil that they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah.
  2. David slaughtered them from the twilight until the evening of the next day; and not a man of them escaped, except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled.
  3. So David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken, and rescued his two wives.
  4. But nothing of theirs was missing, whether small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything that they had taken for themselves; David brought it all back.
  5. So David had captured all the sheep and the cattle which the people drove ahead of the other livestock, and they said, "This is David's spoil."
  1. He led David down, and there they were, scattered over the countryside, eating, drinking and reveling because of the great amount of plunder they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from Judah.
  2. David fought them from dusk until the evening of the next day, and none of them got away, except four hundred young men who rode off on camels and fled.
  3. David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken, including his two wives.
  4. Nothing was missing: young or old, boy or girl, plunder or anything else they had taken. David brought everything back.
  5. He took all the flocks and herds, and his men drove them ahead of the other livestock, saying, "This is David's plunder."
  1. When David came to the two hundred men who were too exhausted to follow David, who had also been left at the brook Besor, and they went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him, then David approached the people and greeted them.
  2. Then all the wicked and worthless men among those who went with David said, "Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away and depart."
  3. Then David said, "You must not do so, my brothers, with what the LORD has given us, who has kept us and delivered into our hand the band that came against us.
  4. "And who will listen to you in this matter? For as his share is who goes down to the battle, so shall his share be who stays by the baggage; they shall share alike."
  5. So it has been from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day.
  1. Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him and who were left behind at the Besor Ravine. They came out to meet David and the people with him. As David and his men approached, he greeted them.
  2. But all the evil men and troublemakers among David's followers said, "Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered. However, each man may take his wife and children and go."
  3. David replied, "No, my brothers, you must not do that with what the LORD has given us. He has protected us and handed over to us the forces that came against us.
  4. Who will listen to what you say? The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All will share alike."
  5. David made this a statute and ordinance for Israel from that day to this.
  1. Now when David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the spoil to the elders of Judah, to his friends, saying, "Behold, a gift for you from the spoil of the enemies of the LORD:
  2. to those who were in Bethel, and to those who were in Ramoth of the Negev, and to those who were in Jattir,
  3. and to those who were in Aroer, and to those who were in Siphmoth, and to those who were in Eshtemoa,
  4. and to those who were in Racal, and to those who were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to those who were in the cities of the Kenites,
  5. and to those who were in Hormah, and to those who were in Bor-ashan, and to those who were in Athach,
  1. When David arrived in Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, who were his friends, saying, "Here is a present for you from the plunder of the LORD's enemies."
  2. He sent it to those who were in Bethel, Ramoth Negev and Jattir;
  3. to those in Aroer, Siphmoth, Eshtemoa
  4. and Racal; to those in the towns of the Jerahmeelites and the Kenites;
  5. to those in Hormah, Bor Ashan, Athach
  1. and to those who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were accustomed to go."
  1. and Hebron; and to those in all the other places where David and his men had roamed.

  1. Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
  2. The Philistines overtook Saul and his sons; and the Philistines killed Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua the sons of Saul.
  3. The battle went heavily against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was badly wounded by the archers.
  4. Then Saul said to his armor bearer, "Draw your sword and pierce me through with it, otherwise these uncircumcised will come and pierce me through and make sport of me " But his armor bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid So Saul took his sword and fell on it.
  5. When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died with him.
  1. Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
  2. The Philistines pressed hard after Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua.
  3. The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him critically.
  4. Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and run me through and abuse me." But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
  5. When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him.
  1. Thus Saul died with his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men on that day together.
  2. When the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, with those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled; then the Philistines came and lived in them.
  3. It came about on the next day when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
  4. They cut off his head and stripped off his weapons, and sent them throughout the land of the Philistines, to carry the good news to the house of their idols and to the people.
  5. They put his weapons in the temple of Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.
  1. So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer and all his men died together that same day.
  2. When the Israelites along the valley and those across the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.
  3. The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
  4. They cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and they sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among their people.
  5. They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths and fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.
  1. Now when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
  2. all the valiant men rose and walked all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Jabesh and burned them there.
  3. They took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
  1. When the people of Jabesh Gilead heard of what the Philistines had done to Saul,
  2. all their valiant men journeyed through the night to Beth Shan. They took down the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth Shan and went to Jabesh, where they burned them.
  3. Then they took their bones and buried them under a tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.
