  1. About that time there occurred no small disturbance concerning the Way.
  2. For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing no little business to the craftsmen;
  3. these he gathered together with the workmen of similar trades, and said, "Men, you know that our prosperity depends upon this business.
  4. "You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made with hands are no gods at all.
  5. "Not only is there danger that this trade of ours fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be regarded as worthless and that she whom all of Asia and the world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence."
  1. About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way.
  2. A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in no little business for the craftsmen.
  3. He called them together, along with the workmen in related trades, and said: "Men, you know we receive a good income from this business.
  4. And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that man-made gods are no gods at all.
  5. There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited, and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty."
  1. When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began crying out, saying, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
  2. The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia.
  3. And when Paul wanted to go into the assembly, the disciples would not let him.
  4. Also some of the Asiarchs who were friends of his sent to him and repeatedly urged him not to venture into the theater.
  5. So then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the assembly was in confusion and the majority did not know for what reason they had come together.
  1. When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
  2. Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia, and rushed as one man into the theater.
  3. Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him.
  4. Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.
  5. The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there.
  1. Some of the crowd concluded it was Alexander, since the Jews had put him forward; and having motioned with his hand, Alexander was intending to make a defense to the assembly.
  2. But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a single outcry arose from them all as they shouted for about two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
  3. After quieting the crowd, the town clerk said, "Men of Ephesus, what man is there after all who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of the image which fell down from heaven?
  4. "So, since these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and to do nothing rash.
  5. "For you have brought these men here who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.
  1. The Jews pushed Alexander to the front, and some of the crowd shouted instructions to him. He motioned for silence in order to make a defense before the people.
  2. But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
  3. The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: "Men of Ephesus, doesn't all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven?
  4. Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to be quiet and not do anything rash.
  5. You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess.
  1. "So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against any man, the courts are in session and proconsuls are available; let them bring charges against one another.
  2. "But if you want anything beyond this, it shall be settled in the lawful assembly.
  3. "For indeed we are in danger of being accused of a riot in connection with today's events, since there is no real cause for it, and in this connection we will be unable to account for this disorderly gathering."
  4. After saying this he dismissed the assembly.
  1. If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges.
  2. If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly.
  3. As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of today's events. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it."
  4. After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.
