  1. What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?
  2. For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.
  3. For what does the Scripture say? "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS."
  4. Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due.
  5. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,
  1. What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
  2. For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
  3. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
  4. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
  5. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
  1. just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
  2. "BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED.
  3. "BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT."
  4. Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, "FAITH WAS CREDITED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS."
  5. How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised;
  1. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
  2. Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
  3. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
  4. Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
  5. How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
  1. and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them,
  2. and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.
  1. And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
  2. And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
