- Now while Ezra was praying and making confession, weeping and prostrating himself before the house of God, a very large assembly, men, women and children, gathered to him from Israel; for the people wept bitterly.
- Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, said to Ezra, "We have been unfaithful to our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.
- "So now let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
- "Arise! For this matter is your responsibility, but we will be with you; be courageous and act."
- Then Ezra rose and made the leading priests, the Levites and all Israel, take oath that they would do according to this proposal; so they took the oath.

- エズラ が 神の 宮の 前に 泣き 伏して 祈り， かつざんげしていた 時， 男， 女および 子供の 大いなる 群集が イスラエル のうちから 彼のもとに 集まってきた． 民はいたく 泣き 悲しんだ．
- 時に エラム の 子孫のうちの エヒエル の 子 シカニヤ が， エズラ に 告げて 言った， 「われわれは 神にむかって 罪を 犯し， この 地の 民から 異邦の 女をめとりました． しかし， このことについては イスラエル に， 今なお 望みがあります．
- それでわれわれはわが 主の 敎と， われわれの 神の 命令におののく 人¿の 敎とに 從って， これらの 妻ならびにその 子供たちを， ことごとく 追い 出すという 契約を， われわれの 神に 立てましょう． そして 律法に 從ってこれを 行いましょう．
- 立ちあがってください， この 事はあなたの 仕事です． われわれはあなたを 助けます． 心を 强くしてこれを 行いなさい 」．
- エズラ は 立って， おもだった 祭司， レビ びとおよびすべての イスラエル びとに， この 言葉のように 行うことを 誓わせたので， 彼らは 誓った．

- Then Ezra rose from before the house of God and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib Although he went there, he did not eat bread nor drink water, for he was mourning over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
- They made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the exiles, that they should assemble at Jerusalem,
- and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the leaders and the elders, all his possessions should be forfeited and he himself excluded from the assembly of the exiles.
- So all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month on the twentieth of the month, and all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and the heavy rain.
- Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have been unfaithful and have married foreign wives adding to the guilt of Israel.

- エズラ は 神の 宮の 前から 出て， エリアシブ の 子 ヨハナン のへやにはいったが， そこへ 行っても 彼は パン も 食べず， 水も 飮まずに 夜を 過ごした． これは 彼が， 捕囚から 歸った 人¿のとがを 嘆いたからである．
- そして ユダ および エルサレム にあまねく 布告を 出し， 捕囚から 歸ったすべての 者に 告げて， エルサレム に 集まるべき 事と，
- つかさおよび 長老たちのさとしに 從って， 三日のうちにこない 者はだれでもその 財産はことごとく ¿收され， その 人自身は 捕われ 人の 會から 破門されると 言った．
- そこで ユダ と ベニヤミン の 人¿は 皆三日のうちに エルサレム に 集まった． これは 九月の 二十日であった． すべての 民は 神の 宮の 前の 廣場に 座して， このことのため， また 大雨のために 震えおののいていた．
- 時に 祭司 エズラ は 立って 彼らに 言った， 「あなたがたは 罪を 犯し， 異邦の 女をめとって， イスラエル のとがを 增した．

- "Now therefore, make confession to the LORD God of your fathers and do His will; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives."
- Then all the assembly replied with a loud voice, "That's right! As you have said, so it is our duty to do.
- "But there are many people; it is the rainy season and we are not able to stand in the open. Nor can the task be done in one or two days, for we have transgressed greatly in this matter.
- "Let our leaders represent the whole assembly and let all those in our cities who have married foreign wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of each city, until the fierce anger of our God on account of this matter is turned away from us."
- Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, with Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supporting them.

- それで 今， あなたがたの 先祖の 神， 主にざんげして， そのみ 旨を 行いなさい． あなたがたはこの 地の 民および 異邦の 女と 離れなさい 」．
- すると 會衆は 皆大聲をあげて 答えた， 「あなたの 言われたとおり， われわれは 必ず 行います．
- しかし 民は 多く， また 大雨の 季節ですから， 外に 立っていることはできません． またこれは 一日やふつかの 仕事ではありません． われわれはこの 事について 大いに 罪を 犯したからです．
- それでどうぞ， われわれのつかさたちは 全會衆のために 立ってください． われわれの 町の 內に， もし 異邦の 女をめとった 者があるならば， みな 定めの 時にこさせなさい． またおのおのの 町の 長老および 裁判人も， それと 一緖にこさせなさい． そうすればこの 事によるわれわれの 神の 激しい 怒りは， ついにわれわれを 離れるでしょう 」．
- ところが アサヘル の 子 ヨナタン および テクワ の 子 ヤハジア はこれに 反對した． そして メシュラム および レビ びと シャベタイ は 彼らを 支持した．

- But the exiles did so. And Ezra the priest selected men who were heads of fathers' households for each of their father's households, all of them by name. So they convened on the first day of the tenth month to investigate the matter.
- They finished investigating all the men who had married foreign wives by the first day of the first month.
- Among the sons of the priests who had married foreign wives were found of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib and Gedaliah.
- They pledged to put away their wives, and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their offense.
- Of the sons of Immer there were Hanani and Zebadiah;

- そこで 捕囚から 歸って 來た 人¿はこのように 行った． すなわち 祭司 エズラ は， 氏族の 長たちをその 氏族にしたがい， おのおのその 名をさして 選んだ． 彼らは 十月の 一日から 座してこの 事を 調べ，
- 正月の 一日になって， 異邦の 女をめとった 人¿をことごとく 調べ 終った．
- 祭司の 子孫のうちで 異邦の 女をめとった 事のあらわれた 者は， ヨザダク の 子 エシュア の 子ら， およびその 兄弟たちのうちでは マアセヤ ， エリエゼル ， ヤリブ ， ゲダリヤ であった．
- 彼らはその 妻を 離緣しようという 誓いをなし， すでに 罪を 犯したというので， そのとがのために 雄羊一頭をささげた．
- インメル の 子らのうちでは ハナニ および ゼバデヤ ．

- Of Levites there were Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah and Eliezer.
- Of the singers there was Eliashib; and of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem and Uri.
- Of Israel, of the sons of Parosh there were Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah and Benaiah;

- All these had married foreign wives, and some of them had wives by whom they had children.
