- For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea;
- and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
- and all ate the same spiritual food;
- and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.
- Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.

- 兄弟たちよ． このことを 知らずにいてもらいたくない． わたしたちの 先祖はみな 雲の 下におり， みな 海を 通り，
- みな 雲の 中， 海の 中で， モ ― セ につく バプテスマ を 受けた．
- また， みな 同じ 靈の 食物を 食べ，
- みな 同じ 靈の 飮み 物を 飮んだ． すなわち， 彼らについてきた 靈の 岩から 飮んだのであるが， この 岩は キリスト にほかならない．
- しかし， 彼らの 中の 大多數は， 神のみこころにかなわなかったので， 荒野で 滅ぼされてしまった．

- Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved.
- Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, "THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND DRINK, AND STOOD UP TO PLAY."
- Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.
- Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents.
- Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

- これらの 出來事は， わたしたちに 對する 警告であって， 彼らが 惡をむさぼったように， わたしたちも 惡をむさぼることのないためなのである．
- だから， 彼らの 中のある 者たちのように， 偶像禮拜者になってはならない． すなわち， 「民は 座して 飮み 食いをし， また 立って 踊り 戱れた 」と 書いてある．
- また， ある 者たちがしたように， わたしたちは 不品行をしてはならない． 不品行をしたため 倒された 者が， 一日に 二万三千人もあった．
- また， ある 者たちがしたように， わたしたちは 主を 試みてはならない． 主を 試みた 者は， へびに 殺された．
- また， ある 者たちがつぶやいたように， つぶやいてはならない． つぶやいた 者は， 「死の 使 」に 滅ぼされた．

- Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
- Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.
- No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

- これらの 事が 彼らに 起ったのは， 他に 對する 警告としてであって， それが 書かれたのは， 世の 終りに 臨んでいるわたしたちに 對する 訓戒のためである．
- だから， 立っていると 思う 者は， 倒れないように 氣をつけるがよい．
- あなたがたの 會った 試鍊で， 世の 常でないものはない． 神は 眞實である． あなたがたを 耐えられないような 試鍊に 會わせることはないばかりか， 試鍊と 同時に， それに 耐えられるように， のがれる 道も 備えて 下さるのである．
