	창세기 42:1-43:15 가나안 땅에 흉년이 들어 애굽에 곡물을 사러 온 요셉의 형들은 요셉과 첫 대면을 하게 되었다. 요셉은 형들을 시험해 보기 위해 형들을 정탐꾼으로 몰아 그들 중 한 사람을 인질로 잡아 두고 베냐민을 데리고 다시 오라고 명령하였다. 야곱은 베냐민을 보내려 하지 않았으나 유다가 자신을 담보로 야곱을 설득하였다. 결국 야곱은 전능하신 하나님을 의지하고 베냐민을 보내기로 결단을 내렸다.

	요셉과 형들의 1차 대면(42:1-42:25)

Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, "Why are you staring at one another?"

He said, "Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy some for us from that place, so that we may live and not die."

Then ten brothers of Joseph went down to buy grain from Egypt.

But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, "I am afraid that harm may befall him."

So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who were coming, for the famine was in the land of Canaan also.

ヤコブは，エジプトに穀物があると知って，息子たちに，「どうしてお前たちは顔を見合わせてばかりいるのだ」と言い，更に，

「聞くところでは，エジプトには穀物があるというではないか．エジプトへ下って行って穀物を買ってきなさい．そうすれば，我¿は死なずに生き延びることができるではないか」と言った．

そこでヨセフの十人の兄たちは，エジプトから穀物を買うために下って行った．

ヤコブはヨセフの弟ベニヤミンを兄たちに同行させなかった．何か不幸なことが彼の身に起こるといけないと思ったからであった．

イスラエルの息子たちは，他の人¿に混じって穀物を買いに出かけた．カナン地方にも飢鴨が襲っていたからである．

Now Joseph was the ruler over the land; he was the one who sold to all the people of the land And Joseph's brothers came and bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

When Joseph saw his brothers he recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and spoke to them harshly. And he said to them, "Where have you come from?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan, to buy food."

But Joseph had recognized his brothers, although they did not recognize him.

Joseph remembered the dreams which he had about them, and said to them, "You are spies; you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land."

Then they said to him, "No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.

ところで，ヨセフはエジプトの司政者として，國民に穀物を販賣する監督をしていた．ヨセフの兄たちは來て，地面にひれ伏し，ヨセフを拜した．

ヨセフは一目で兄たちだと氣づいたが，そしらぬ振りをして嚴しい口調で，「お前たちは，どこからやって來たのか」と問いかけた．彼らは答えた．「食糧を買うために，カナン地方からやって參りました．」

ヨセフは兄たちだと氣づいていたが，兄たちはヨセフとは氣づかなかった．

ヨセフは，そのとき，かつて兄たちについて見た夢を思い起こした．ヨセフは彼らに言った．「お前たちは回し者だ．この國の手薄な所を探りに來たにちがいない．」

彼らは答えた．「いいえ，御主君樣．僕どもは食糧を買いに來ただけでございます．

"We are all sons of one man; we are honest men, your servants are not spies."

Yet he said to them, "No, but you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land!"

But they said, "Your servants are twelve brothers in all, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no longer alive."

Joseph said to them, "It is as I said to you, you are spies;

by this you will be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here!

わたしどもは皆，ある男の息子で，正直な人間でございます．僕どもは決して回し者などではありません．」

しかしヨセフが，「いや，お前たちはこの國の手薄な所を探りに來たにちがいない」と言うと，

彼らは答えた．「僕どもは，本當に十二人兄弟で，カナン地方に住むある男の息子たちでございます．末の弟は，今，父のもとにおりますが，もう一人は失いました．」

すると，ヨセフは言った．「お前たちは回し者だとわたしが言ったのは，そのことだ．

その点について，お前たちを試すことにする．ファラオの命にかけて言う．いちばん末の弟を，ここに來させよ．それまでは，お前たちをここから出すわけにはいかぬ．

"Send one of you that he may get your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies."

So he put them all together in prison for three days.

Now Joseph said to them on the third day, "Do this and live, for I fear God:

if you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined in your prison; but as for the rest of you, go, carry grain for the famine of your households,

and bring your youngest brother to me, so your words may be verified, and you will not die." And they did so.

お前たちのうち，だれか一人を行かせて，弟を連れて來い．それまでは，お前たちを監禁し，お前たちの言うことが本當かどうか試す．もしそのとおりでなかったら，ファラオの命にかけて言う．お前たちは間違いなく回し者だ．」

ヨセフは，こうして彼らを三日間，牢獄に監禁しておいた．

三日目になって，ヨセフは彼らに言った．「こうすれば，お前たちの命を助けてやろう．わたしは神を畏れる者だ．

お前たちが本當に正直な人間だというのなら，兄弟のうち一人だけを牢獄に監禁するから，ほかの者は皆，飢えているお前たちの家族のために穀物を持って歸り，

末の弟をここへ連れて來い．そうして，お前たちの言い分が確かめられたら，殺されはしない．」彼らは同意して，

Then they said to one another, "Truly we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen; therefore this distress has come upon us."

Reuben answered them, saying, "Did I not tell you, 'Do not sin against the boy'; and you would not listen? Now comes the reckoning for his blood."

They did not know, however, that Joseph understood, for there was an interpreter between them.

He turned away from them and wept But when he returned to them and spoke to them, he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.

Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain and to restore every man's money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. And thus it was done for them.

互いに言った．「ああ，我¿は弟のことで罰を受けているのだ．弟が我¿に助けを求めたとき，あれほどの苦しみを見ながら，耳を貸そうともしなかった．それで，この苦しみが我¿にふりかかった．」

すると，ルベンが答えた．「あのときわたしは，『あの子に惡いことをするな』と言ったではないか．お前たちは耳を貸そうともしなかった．だから，あの子の血の報いを受けるのだ．」

彼らはヨセフが聞いているのを知らなかった．ヨセフと兄弟たちの間に，通譯がいたからである．

ヨセフは彼らから遠ざかって泣いた．それからまた戾って來て，話をしたうえでシメオンを選び出し，彼らの見ている前で縛り上げた．

ヨセフは人¿に命じて，兄たちの袋に穀物を詰め，支拂った銀をめいめいの袋に返し，道中の食糧を與えるように指示し，そのとおり實行された．

	야곱의 결단(42:26-43:15)

So they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed from there.

As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he saw his money; and behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.

Then he said to his brothers, "My money has been returned, and behold, it is even in my sack." And their hearts sank, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, "What is this that God has done to us?"

When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying,

"The man, the lord of the land, spoke harshly with us, and took us for spies of the country.

彼らは穀物をろばに積んでそこを立ち去った．

途中の宿で，一人がろばに餌をやろうとして，自分の袋を開けてみると，袋の口のところに自分の銀があるのを見つけ，

ほかの兄弟たちに言った．「戾されているぞ，わたしの銀が．ほら，わたしの袋の中に．」みんなの者は驚き，互いに震えながら言った．「これは一體，どういうことだ．神が我¿になさったことは．」

一行はカナン地方にいる父ヤコブのところへ歸って來て，自分たちの身に起こったことをすべて報告した．

「あの國の主君である人が，我¿を嚴しい口調で問い詰めて，この國を探りに來た回し者にちがいないと言うのです．

"But we said to him, 'We are honest men; we are not spies.

'We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no longer alive, and the youngest is with our father today in the land of Canaan.'

"The man, the lord of the land, said to us, 'By this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me and take grain for the famine of your households, and go.

'But bring your youngest brother to me that I may know that you are not spies, but honest men. I will give your brother to you, and you may trade in the land.'"

Now it came about as they were emptying their sacks, that behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were dismayed.

もちろん，我¿は正直な人間で，決して回し者などではないと答えました．

我¿が十二人兄弟で，一人の父の息子であり，一人は失いましたが，末の弟は今，カナンの地方に住む父のもとにいますと言ったところ，

あの國の主君である人が言いました．『では，お前たちが本當に正直な人間かどうかを，こうして確かめることにする．お前たち兄弟のうち，一人だけここに殘し，飢えているお前たちの家族のために，穀物を持ち歸るがいい．

ただし，末の弟を必ずここへ連れて來るのだ．そうすれば，お前たちが回し者ではなく，正直な人間であることが分かるから，お前たちに兄弟を返し，自由にこの國に出入りできるようにしてやろう．』」

それから，彼らが袋を開けてみると，めいめいの袋の中にもそれぞれ自分の銀の包みが入っていた．彼らも父も，銀の包みを見て恐ろしくなった．

Their father Jacob said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and you would take Benjamin; all these things are against me."

Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, "You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my care, and I will return him to you."

But Jacob said, "My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left If harm should befall him on the journey you are taking, then you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow."

父ヤコブは息子たちに言った．「お前たちは，わたしから次¿と子供を奪ってしまった．ヨセフを失い，シメオンも失った．その上ベニヤミンまでも取り上げるのか．みんなわたしを苦しめることばかりだ．」

ルベンは父に言った．「もしも，お父さんのところにベニヤミンを連れ歸らないようなことがあれば，わたしの二人の息子を殺してもかまいません．どうか，彼をわたしに任せてください．わたしが，必ずお父さんのところに連れ歸りますから．」

しかし，ヤコブは言った．「いや，この子だけは，お前たちと一緖に行かせるわけにはいかぬ．この子の兄は死んでしまい，殘っているのは，この子だけではないか．お前たちの旅の途中で，何か不幸なことがこの子の身に起こりでもしたら，お前たちは，この白髮の父を，悲嘆のうちに陰府に下らせることになるのだ．」

Now the famine was severe in the land.

So it came about when they had finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, "Go back, buy us a little food."

Judah spoke to him, however, saying, "The man solemnly warned us, 'You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.'

"If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.

"But if you do not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, 'You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.'"

この地方の飢鴨はひどくなる一方であった．

エジプトから持ち歸った穀物を食べ盡くすと，父は息子たちに言った．「もう一度行って，我¿の食糧を少し買って來なさい．」

しかし，ユダは答えた．「あの人は，『弟が一緖でないかぎり，わたしの顔を見ることは許さぬ』と，嚴しく我¿に言い渡したのです．

もし弟を一緖に行かせてくださるなら，我¿は下って行って，あなたのために食糧を買って參ります．

しかし，一緖に行かせてくださらないのなら，行くわけにはいきません．『弟が一緖でないかぎり，わたしの顔を見ることは許さぬ』と，あの人が我¿に言ったのですから．」

Then Israel said, "Why did you treat me so badly by telling the man whether you still had another brother?"

But they said, "The man questioned particularly about us and our relatives, saying, 'Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?' So we answered his questions. Could we possibly know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down'?"

Judah said to his father Israel, "Send the lad with me and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, we as well as you and our little ones.

"I myself will be surety for him; you may hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame before you forever.

"For if we had not delayed, surely by now we could have returned twice."

「なぜお前たちは，その人にもう一人弟がいるなどと言って，わたしを苦しめるようなことをしたのか」とイスラエルが言うと，

彼らは答えた．「あの人が，我¿のことや家族のことについて，『お前たちの父親は，まだ生きているのか』とか，『お前たちには，まだほかに弟がいるのか』などと，しきりに尋ねるものですから，尋ねられるままに答えただけです．まさか，『弟を連れて來い』などと言われようとは思いも寄りませんでしたから．」

ユダは，父イスラエルに言った．「あの子をぜひわたしと一緖に行かせてください．それなら，すぐにでも行って參ります．そうすれば，我¿も，あなたも，子供たちも死なずに生き延びることができます．

あの子のことはわたしが保障します．その責任をわたしに負わせてください．もしも，あの子をお父さんのもとに連れ歸らず，無事な姿をお目にかけられないようなことにでもなれば，わたしがあなたに對して生涯その罪を負い續けます．

こんなにためらっていなければ，今ごろはもう二度も行って來たはずです．」

Then their father Israel said to them, "If it must be so, then do this: take some of the best products of the land in your bags, and carry down to the man as a present, a little balm and a little honey, aromatic gum and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.

"Take double the money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was a mistake.

"Take your brother also, and arise, return to the man;

and may God Almighty grant you compassion in the sight of the man, so that he will release to you your other brother and Benjamin And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved."

So the men took this present, and they took double the money in their hand, and Benjamin; then they arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

すると，父イスラエルは息子たちに言った．「どうしてもそうしなければならないのなら，こうしなさい．この土地の名産の品を袋に入れて，その人への贈り物として持って行くのだ．乳香と蜜を少し，樹脂と ¿藥，ピスタチオやア ― モンドの實．

それから，銀を二倍用意して行きなさい．袋の口に戾されていた銀も持って行ってお返しするのだ．たぶん何かの間違いだったのだろうから．

では，弟を連れて，早速その人のところへ戾りなさい．

どうか，全能の神がその人の前でお前たちに憐れみを施し，もう一人の兄弟と，このベニヤミンを返してくださいますように．このわたしがどうしても子供を失わねばならないのなら，失ってもよい．」

息子たちは贈り物と二倍の銀を用意すると，ベニヤミンを連れて，早速エジプトへ下って行った．さて，一行がヨセフの前に進み出ると，
