- Now while Ezra was praying and making confession, weeping and prostrating himself before the house of God, a very large assembly, men, women and children, gathered to him from Israel; for the people wept bitterly.
- Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, said to Ezra, "We have been unfaithful to our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.
- "So now let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
- "Arise! For this matter is your responsibility, but we will be with you; be courageous and act."
- Then Ezra rose and made the leading priests, the Levites and all Israel, take oath that they would do according to this proposal; so they took the oath.

- エズラ は 神殿の 前で 祈り， 淚ながらに 罪を 告白し， 身を 伏せていた． イスラエル 人が 彼のもとに 集まり， 男， 女， 子供から 成る 非常に 大きな 會衆ができた． この 人¿も 激しく 泣いていた．
- エラム の 一族の エヒエル の 子 シェカンヤ は エズラ に 言った． 「わたしたちは 神に 背き， この 地の 民の 中から， 異民族の 嫁を 迎え 入れました． しかしながら， 今でも イスラエル には 希望があります．
- 今， わたしの 主の 勸めと， 神の 御命令を 畏れ 敬う 方¿の 勸めに 從ってわたしたちは 神と 契約を 結び， その 嫁と 嫁の 産んだ 子をすべて 離緣いたします． 律法に 從って 行われますように．
- お 立ちください． あなたにはなすべきことがあります． 協力いたしますから， 斷固として 行動してください． 」
- エズラ は 立ち 上がり， レビ 人の 祭司長， および イスラエル のすべての 人¿にこの 提言どおり 實行することを 誓わせると， 彼らは 誓った．

- Then Ezra rose from before the house of God and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib Although he went there, he did not eat bread nor drink water, for he was mourning over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
- They made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the exiles, that they should assemble at Jerusalem,
- and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the leaders and the elders, all his possessions should be forfeited and he himself excluded from the assembly of the exiles.
- So all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month on the twentieth of the month, and all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and the heavy rain.
- Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have been unfaithful and have married foreign wives adding to the guilt of Israel.

- エズラ は 神殿の 前を 立ち 去り， エルヤシブ の 子 ヨハナン の 祭司室に 行き， そこで 一夜を 明かしたが， パン も 水も 取らなかった． 捕囚の 民の 背信を 嘆き 續けていたからである．
- すべての 捕囚の 子らが エルサレム に 集まるように， ユダ と エルサレム に 布告が 出された．
- 三日以內に 出頭しない 者があれば， 長たちと 長老たちの 勸めによって， その 全財産を ¿收し， その 者を 捕囚の 民の 會衆から 追放することになった．
- ユダ と ベニヤミン の 男子は 全員， 三日以內に， すなわち 第九の 月の 二十日に エルサレム に 集まった． 民は 皆， 神殿の 廣場に 座り， そのことのため， また 雨が 降っていたために 震えていた．
- 祭司 エズラ は 立ち 上がり， 彼らに 言った． 「あなたたちは 神に 背いた． 異民族の 嫁を 迎え 入れて， イスラエル に 新たな 罪科を 加えた．

- "Now therefore, make confession to the LORD God of your fathers and do His will; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives."
- Then all the assembly replied with a loud voice, "That's right! As you have said, so it is our duty to do.
- "But there are many people; it is the rainy season and we are not able to stand in the open. Nor can the task be done in one or two days, for we have transgressed greatly in this matter.
- "Let our leaders represent the whole assembly and let all those in our cities who have married foreign wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of each city, until the fierce anger of our God on account of this matter is turned away from us."
- Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, with Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supporting them.

- 今， 先祖の 神なる 主の 前で 罪を 告白し， 主の 御旨を 行い， この 地の 民からも， 異民族の 嫁からも 離れなさい． 」
- 會衆はこぞって 大聲で 答えた． 「必ずお 言葉どおりにいたします．
- しかし， 民は 大勢であり， 雨の 季節でもあって 外に 立っている 力はありません． また， わたしたちはこの 罪を 數多く 犯しましたので， その 處理は 一日や 二日では 終えることができません．
- わたしたちの 長を 全會衆の 上に 立て， わたしたちの 町の 者で 異民族の 嫁を 迎え 入れた 者が 皆， 定められたときに， それぞれの 町の 長老と 裁判官と 共に 出頭するようにしていただけないでしょうか． この 罪に 對して 燃え 上がったわたしたちへの 神のお 怒りもついに 治まることでありましょう． 」
- ただ アサエル の 子 ヨナタン と ティクワ の 子 ヤフゼヤ がこれに 反對し， レビ 人 メシュラム と シャベタイ がその 二人に 加擔した．

- But the exiles did so. And Ezra the priest selected men who were heads of fathers' households for each of their father's households, all of them by name. So they convened on the first day of the tenth month to investigate the matter.
- They finished investigating all the men who had married foreign wives by the first day of the first month.
- Among the sons of the priests who had married foreign wives were found of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib and Gedaliah.
- They pledged to put away their wives, and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their offense.
- Of the sons of Immer there were Hanani and Zebadiah;

- しかし， 捕囚の 子らは 提案されたとおりに 行った． 祭司 エズラ と 共に， 各家族の 家長である 人¿が 選び 出され， 皆その 名が 記錄されている． 彼らは 調査のために 第十の 月の 一日に 席に 着き，
- 第一の 月の 一日に， 異民族の 嫁を 迎え 入れた 男子の 調査をすべて 終えた．
- 祭司の 一族の 中で， 異民族の 女を 嫁に 取ったのは， ヨツァダク の 子 イエシュア の 一族とその 兄弟の 中の マアセヤ ， エリエゼル ， ヤリブ ， ゲダルヤ ．

- Of Levites there were Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah and Eliezer.
- Of the singers there was Eliashib; and of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem and Uri.
- Of Israel, of the sons of Parosh there were Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah and Benaiah;
