- In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea
- and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."
- This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' "
- John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
- People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan.

- 그 무렵에 세례자 요한이 나타나 유다 광야에서
- "회개하여라. 하늘 나라가 다가왔다!" 하고 선포하였다. 이 사람을 두고 예언자 이사야는 이렇게 말하였다.
- "광야에서 외치는 이의 소리가 들린다. '너희는 주의 길을 닦고 그의 길을 고르게 하여라.'"
- 요한은 낙타털 옷을 입고 허리에 가죽띠를 두르고 메뚜기와 들꿀을 먹으며 살았다.
- 그 때에 예루살렘을 비롯하여 유다 각 지방과 요르단 강 부근의 사람들이 다 요르단 강으로 요한을 찾아가서

- Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
- But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
- Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.
- And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
- The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

- 자기 죄를 고백하며 세례를 받았다.
- 그러나 많은 바리사이파 사람들과 사두가이파 사람들이 세례를 받으러 오는 것을 보고 요한은 이렇게 말하였다. "이 독사의 족속들아! 닥쳐올 그 징벌을 피하라고 누가 일러주더냐?
- 너희는 회개했다는 증거를 행실로써 보여라.
- 그리고 '아브라함이 우리 조상이다.' 하는 말은 아예 할 생각도 마라. 사실 하느님은 이 돌들로도 아브라함의 자녀를 만드실 수 있다.
- 도끼가 이미 나무 뿌리에 닿았으니 좋은 열매를 맺지 않은 나무는 다 찍혀 불 속에 던져질 것이다.

- "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
- His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire."
- Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.
- But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"
- Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented.

- 나는 너희를 회개시키려고 물로 세례를 베풀거니와 내 뒤에 오시는 분은 성령과 불로 세례를 베푸실 것이다. 그분은 나보다 훌륭한 분이어서 나는 그분의 신발을 들고 다닐 자격조차 없는 사람이다.
- 그분은 손에 키를 드시고 타작 마당의 곡식을 깨끗이 가려 알곡은 모아 곳간에 들이시고 쭉정이는 꺼지지 않는 불에 태우실 것이다."
- 그 즈음에 예수께서 세례를 받으시려고 갈릴래아를 떠나 요르단 강으로 요한을 찾아오셨다.
- 그러나 요한은 "제가 선생님께 세례를 받아야 할 터인데 어떻게 선생님께서 제게 오십니까?" 하며 굳이 사양하였다.
- 예수께서 요한에게 "지금은 내가 하자는 대로 하여라. 우리가 이렇게 해야 하느님께서 원하시는 모든 일이 이루어진다." 하고 대답하셨다. 그제야 요한은 예수께서 하자 하시는 대로 하였다.

- As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.
- And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

- 예수께서 세례를 받으시고 물에서 올라오시자 홀연히 하늘이 열리고 하느님의 성령이 비둘기 모양으로 당신 위에 내려오시는 것이 보였다.
- 그 때 하늘에서 이런 소리가 들려왔다. "이는 내 사랑하는 아들, 내 마음에 드는 아들이다."
