- Now it was the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.
- At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.
- So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"
- For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.
- While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him."

- 명절이 되면 총독은 군중이 요구하는 대로 죄수 하나를 놓아주는 관례가 있었다.
- 마침 그 때에 (예수) 바라빠라는 이름난 죄수가 있었다.
- 빌라도는 모여든 군중에게 "누구를 놓아주면 좋겠느냐? 바라빠라는 예수냐? 그리스도라는 예수냐?" 하고 물었다.
- 빌라도는 예수가 군중에게 끌려온 것이 그들의 시기 때문임을 잘 알고 있었다.
- 빌라도가 재판을 하고 있을 때에 그의 아내가 전갈을 보내어 "당신은 그 무죄한 사람의 일에 관여하지 마십시오. 간밤에 저는 그 사람의 일로 꿈자리가 몹시 사나웠습니다." 하고 당부하였다.

- But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
- "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered.
- "What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!"
- "Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"
- When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!"

- 그 동안 대사제들과 원로들은 군중을 선동하여 바라빠를 놓아주고 예수는 죽여달라고 요구하게 하였다.
- 총독이 "이 두 사람 중에서 누구를 놓아달라는 말이냐?" 하고 묻자 그들은 "바라빠요." 하고 소리질렀다.
- 그래서 "그리스도라는 예수는 어떻게 하면 좋겠느냐?" 하자 모두들 "십자가에 못박으시오!" 하고 소리질렀다.
- 빌라도가 "도대체 그 사람의 잘못이 무엇이냐?" 하고 물었으나 사람들은 더 악을 써 가며 "십자가에 못박으시오!" 하고 외쳤다.
- 빌라도는 그 이상 더 말해 보아야 아무런 소용도 없다는 것을 알았을 뿐만 아니라 오히려 폭동이 일어나려는 기세가 보였으므로 물을 가져다가 군중 앞에서 손을 씻으며 "너희가 맡아서 처리하여라. 나는 이 사람의 피에 대해서는 책임이 없다." 하고 말하였다.

- All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and on our children!"
- Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
- Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him.
- They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
- and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the Jews!" they said.

- 군중은 "그 사람의 피에 대한 책임은 우리와 우리 자손들이 지겠습니다." 하고 소리쳤다.
- 그래서 빌라도는 바라빠를 놓아주고 예수는 채찍질하게 한 다음, 십자가형에 처하라고 내어주었다.
- 총독의 병사들이 예수를 총독 관저로 끌고 들어가서 전 부대원을 불러모아 예수를 에워쌌다.
- 그리고 예수의 옷을 벗기고 대신 주홍색 옷을 입힌 뒤
- 가시로 왕관을 엮어 머리에 씌우고 오른손에 갈대를 들린 다음 그 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 "유다인의 왕 만세!" 하고 떠들며 조롱하였다.

- They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.
- After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

- 그리고 그에게 침을 뱉으며 갈대를 빼앗아 머리를 때렸다.
- 이렇게 희롱하고 나서 그 겉옷을 벗기고 예수의 옷을 도로 입혀 십자가에 못박으러 끌고 나갔다.
