- In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.
- (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)
- And everyone went to his own town to register.
- So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.
- He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

- 그 무렵에 로마 황제 아우구스토가 온 천하에 호구 조사령을 내렸다.
- 이 첫 번째 호구 조사를 하던 때 시리아에는 퀴리노라는 사람이 총독으로 있었다.
- 그래서 사람들은 등록을 하러 저마다 본고장을 찾아 길을 떠나게 되었다.
- 요셉도 갈릴래아 지방의 나자렛 동네를 떠나 유다 지방에 있는 베들레헴이라는 곳으로 갔다. 베들레헴은 다윗 왕이 난 고을이며 요셉은 다윗의 후손이었기 때문이다.
- 요셉은 자기와 약혼한 마리아와 함께 등록하러 갔는데 그 때 마리아는 임신 중이었다.

- While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,
- and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
- And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.
- An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
- But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

- 그들이 베들레헴에 가 머물러 있는 동안 마리아는 달이 차서
- 드디어 첫아들을 낳았다. 여관에는 그들이 머무를 방이 없었기 때문에 아기는 포대기에 싸서 말구유에 눕혔다.
- 그 근방 들에는 목자들이 밤을 새워가며 양떼를 지키고 있었다.
- 그런데 주님의 영광의 빛이 그들에게 두루 비치면서 주님의 천사가 나타났다. 목자들이 겁에 질려 떠는 것을 보고
- 천사는 "두려워하지 마라. 나는 너희에게 기쁜 소식을 전하러 왔다. 모든 백성들에게 큰 기쁨이 될 소식이다.

- Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
- This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
- Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
- "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."
- When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."

- 오늘 밤 너희의 구세주께서 다윗의 고을에 나셨다. 그분은 바로 주님이신 그리스도이시다.
- 너희는 한 갓난 아이가 포대기에 싸여 구유에 누워 있는 것을 보게 될 터인데 그것이 바로 그분을 알아보는 표이다." 하고 말하였다.
- 이 때에 갑자기 수많은 하늘의 군대가 나타나 그 천사와 함께 하느님을 찬양하였다.
- "하늘 높은 곳에는 하느님께 영광, 땅에서는 그가 사랑하시는 사람들에게 평화!"
- 천사들이 목자들을 떠나 하늘로 돌아간 뒤에 목자들은 서로 "어서 베들레헴으로 가서 주님께서 우리에게 알려주신 그 사실을 보자." 하면서

- So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.
- When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,
- and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.
- But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
- The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

- 곧 달려가 보았더니 마리아와 요셉이 있었고 과연 그 아기는 구유에 누워 있었다.
- 아기를 본 목자들이 사람들에게 아기에 관하여 들은 말을 이야기하였더니
- 목자들의 말을 들은 사람들은 모두 그 일을 신기하게 생각하였다.
- 마리아는 이 모든 일을 마음속 깊이 새겨 오래 간직하였다.
- 목자들은 자기들이 듣고 보고 한 것이 천사들에게 들은 바와 같았기 때문에 하느님의 영광을 찬양하며 돌아갔다.

- On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he had been conceived.
- When the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord
- (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord"),
- and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: "a pair of doves or two young pigeons."
- Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

- 여드레째 되는 날은 아기에게 할례를 베푸는 날이었다. 그 날이 되자 아기가 잉태되기 전에 천사가 일러준 대로 그 이름을 예수라고 하였다.
- 그리고 모세가 정한 법대로 정결 예식을 치르는 날이 되자 부모는 아기를 데리고 예루살렘으로 올라갔다.
- 그것은 "누구든지 첫아들을 주님께 바쳐야 한다."는 주님의 율법에 따라 아기를 주님께 봉헌하려는 것이었고
- 또 주님의 율법대로 산비둘기 한 쌍이나 집비둘기 새끼 두 마리를 정결례의 제물로 바치려는 것이었다.
- 그런데 예루살렘에는 시므온이라는 사람이 살고 있었다. 이 사람은 의롭고 경건하게 살면서 이스라엘의 구원을 기다리고 있었다. 그에게는 성령이 머물러 계셨는데

- It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
- Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,
- Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
- "Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace.
- For my eyes have seen your salvation,

- 성령은 그에게 주님께서 약속하신 그리스도를 죽기 전에 꼭 보게 되리라고 알려주셨던 것이다.
- 마침내 시므온이 성령의 인도를 받아 성전에 들어갔더니 마침 예수의 부모가 첫아들에 대한 율법의 규정을 지키려고 어린 아기 예수를 성전에 데리고 왔다.
- 그래서 시므온은 그 아기를 두 팔에 받아 안고 하느님을 찬양하였다.
- "주여, 이제는 말씀하신 대로 이 종은 평안히 눈감게 되었습니다.
- 주님의 구원을 제 눈으로 보았습니다.

- which you have prepared in the sight of all people,
- a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel."
- The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him.
- Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against,
- so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too."

- 만민에게 베푸신 구원을 보았습니다.
- 그 구원은 이방인들에게는 주의 길을 밝히는 빛이 되고 주의 백성 이스라엘에게는 영광이 됩니다."
- 아기의 부모는 아기를 두고 하는 이 말을 듣고 감격하였다.
- 시므온은 그들을 축복하고 나서 아기 어머니 마리아에게 이렇게 말하였다. "이 아기는 수많은 이스라엘 백성을 넘어뜨리기도 하고 일으키기도 할 분이십니다. 이 아기는 많은 사람들의 반대를 받는 표적이 되어
- 당신의 마음은 예리한 칼에 찔리듯 아플 것입니다. 그러나 그는 반대자들의 숨은 생각을 드러나게 할 것입니다."
