- After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.
- Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were constantly coming to be baptized.
- (This was before John was put in prison.)
- An argument developed between some of John's disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.
- They came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan--the one you testified about--well, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him."

- 그 뒤에 예수께서는 제자들과 함께 유다 지방으로 가셔서 그 곳에 머무르시면서 세례를 베푸셨다.
- 한편 살림에서 가까운 애논이라는 곳에 물이 많아서 요한은 거기에서 세례를 베풀었는데 많은 사람들이 찾아와 세례를 받았다.
- 이것은 요한이 감옥에 갇히기 전의 일이었다.
- 그런데 요한의 제자들과 어떤 유다인 사이에 정결 예식을 두고 논쟁이 벌어졌다.
- 그 제자들은 요한을 찾아가 "선생님, 선생님과 함께 요르단 강 건너편에 계시던 분이 세례를 베풀고 있습니다. 선생님께서 증언하신 바로 그분인데 모든 사람이 그분에게 몰려가고 있습니다." 하고 말하였다.

- To this John replied, "A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.
- You yourselves can testify that I said, 'I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of him.'
- The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.
- He must become greater; I must become less.
- "The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all.

- 요한은 제자들에게 이렇게 말하였다. "사람은 하늘이 주시지 않으면 아무것도 받을 수 없다.
- 나는 그리스도가 아니라 그분 앞에 사명을 띠고 온 사람이라고 말하였는데 너희는 그것을 직접 들은 증인들이다.
- 신부를 맞을 사람은 신랑이다. 신랑의 친구도 옆에 서 있다가 신랑의 목소리가 들리면 기쁨에 넘친다. 내 마음도 이런 기쁨으로 가득 차 있다.
- 그분은 더욱 커지셔야 하고 나는 작아져야 한다."
- 위에서 오신 분은 모든 사람 위에 계신다. 세상에서 나온 사람은 세상에 속하여 세상 일을 말하고 하늘에서 오신 분은 모든 사람 위에 계시며

- He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony.
- The man who has accepted it has certified that God is truthful.
- For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.
- The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.
- Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."

- 친히 보고 들으신 것을 증언하신다. 그러나 아무도 그분의 증언을 받아들이지 않는다.
- 그분의 증언을 받아들이는 사람은 하느님께서 참되시다는 것을 확증하는 사람이다.
- 하느님께서 보내신 분이 하시는 말씀은 곧 하느님의 말씀이다. 하느님께서는 그분에게 성령을 아낌없이 주시기 때문이다.
- 아버지께서는 아들을 사랑하셔서 모든 것을 그의 손에 맡기셨다.
- 그러므로 아들을 믿는 사람은 영원한 생명을 얻을 것이며 아들을 믿지 않는 사람은 생명을 얻기는커녕 오히려 하느님의 영원한 분노를 사게 될 것이다.
