	사사기 12:1-14:20 에브라임 지파가 입다의 승리에 대해 시비하자 입다는 그들을 크게 도륙했다. 그를 이어 입산, 엘론, 압돈이 사사로 세움받았다. 이스라엘이 다시 범죄하자 하나님께서 그들을 블레셋의 손에 붙여 고통당하게 하셨다. 이러한 때에, 잉태하지 못하던 마노아의 아내가 야웨의 사자로부터 아들을 낳으리라는 말을 듣고 삼손을 낳았다. 태어날 때부터 나실인이었던 삼손은 블레셋 여인을 사랑하여 그녀와 결혼하였으나 친구에게 빼앗기고 말았다.

	입다와 에브라임의 전쟁(12:1-12:15)

The men of Ephraim called out their forces, crossed over to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, "Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We're going to burn down your house over your head."

Jephthah answered, "I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn't save me out of their hands.

When I saw that you wouldn't help, I took my life in my hands and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave me the victory over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?"

Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, "You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh."

The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead asked him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he replied, "No,"

에브라임 장정들이 모여 요르단 강을 건너 사본으로 와서 입다에게 항의하였다. "네가 암몬 사람들과 싸우러 건너갈 때에 우리도 불러 함께 출전하게 하지 않았으니, 어찌 그럴 수가 있느냐? 우리가 네 일족을 불에 태워 죽이리라."

입다가 그들에게 대답하였다. "내가 내 백성을 거느리고 암몬 사람들과 격전하기에 앞서 나는 와서 도와달라고 너희를 불렀다. 그러나 너희는 그들의 손아귀에서 우리를 건져내려고 하지 않았다.

너희가 아무도 나를 도우러 오지 않는 것을 보고 나는 목숨을 내놓고 암몬 진지로 쳐들어갔다. 그러자 야훼께서는 그들을 내 손에 부쳐주셨다. 그런데 어찌하여 오늘 너희가 나에게 와서 도리어 싸움을 거느냐?"

입다는 길르앗 전군을 이끌고 에브라임과 싸워 에브라임을 격파하였다. 길르앗 사람들은 에브라임 사람들에게 조롱을 받는 처지였다. "에브라임에서 도망친 길르앗 놈들, 에브라임과 므나쎄 사람들 속을 떠도는 놈들"이라는 말을 들어왔던 것이다.

길르앗 군은 에브라임 지역의 요르단 강 나루를 차지하고 에브라임 사람이 도망치다가 건네달라고 하면, 에브라임 사람이냐고 묻고 아니라고 하면

they said, "All right, say 'Shibboleth.' " He said, "Sibboleth," because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.

Jephthah led Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in a town in Gilead.

After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem led Israel.

He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters away in marriage to those outside his clan, and for his sons he brought in thirty young women as wives from outside his clan. Ibzan led Israel seven years.

Then Ibzan died, and was buried in Bethlehem.

"쉽볼렛"이라고 말해 보라고 하고 그대로 발음하지 못하고 "십볼렛"이라고 하면 잡아서 그 요르단 강 나루턱에서 죽였다. 이렇게 하여 그 때 죽은 에브라임 사람의 수는 사만 이천이나 되었다.

길르앗 사람 입다는 육 년 동안 이스라엘의 판관으로 있다가 죽어 길르앗에 있는 자기의 성읍 미스바에 묻혔다.

그 뒤로 베들레헴 출신 입산이 이스라엘의 판관으로 있었다.

그에게는 아들과 딸이 각각 삼십 명 있었는데 딸들은 일가 아닌 사람들에게 시집보냈고 며느리 삼십 명도 일가 밖에서 맞아들였다. 그는 칠 년 동안 이스라엘을 다스리다가

죽어 베들레헴에 묻혔다.

After him, Elon the Zebulunite led Israel ten years.

Then Elon died, and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.

After him, Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon, led Israel.

He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys. He led Israel eight years.

Then Abdon son of Hillel died, and was buried at Pirathon in Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.

그 뒤로 즈불룬 출신 엘론이 이스라엘의 판관이 되었다. 그는 십 년 동안 이스라엘을 다스렸다.

그는 죽어 즈불룬 땅에 있는 엘론에 묻혔다.

	삼손의 출생(13:1-13:25)

Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, so the LORD delivered them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years.

A certain man of Zorah, named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, had a wife who was sterile and remained childless.

The angel of the LORD appeared to her and said, "You are sterile and childless, but you are going to conceive and have a son.

Now see to it that you drink no wine or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything unclean,

because you will conceive and give birth to a son. No razor may be used on his head, because the boy is to be a Nazirite, set apart to God from birth, and he will begin the deliverance of Israel from the hands of the Philistines."

이스라엘 백성이 야훼의 눈에 거슬리는 일을 하였다. 그래서 다시 야훼께서는 그들을 사십 년 동안 불레셋 사람들의 손에 부치셨다.

그 때 소라 지방에 단 지파 출신 마노아라는 사람이 있었다. 그의 아내는 아기를 낳지 못하는 돌계집이었는데,

야훼의 천사가 그 여인에게 나타나 말하였다. "보아라. 너는 아기를 낳아보지 못한 돌계집이지만 이제 임신하여 아들을 낳으리라.

이제부터 몸을 조심하여 포도주나 소주를 마시지 말고 부정한 것을 일절 먹지 마라.

네가 임신하여 아들을 낳거든 그 머리에 면도칼을 대지 마라. 그 아이는 모태에서부터 이미 하느님께 바쳐진 나지르인이다. 그 아이가 비로소 이스라엘을 불레셋 사람들 손에서 건져낼 것이다."

Then the woman went to her husband and told him, "A man of God came to me. He looked like an angel of God, very awesome. I didn't ask him where he came from, and he didn't tell me his name.

But he said to me, 'You will conceive and give birth to a son. Now then, drink no wine or other fermented drink and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a Nazirite of God from birth until the day of his death.' "

Then Manoah prayed to the LORD : "O LORD, I beg you, let the man of God you sent to us come again to teach us how to bring up the boy who is to be born."

God heard Manoah, and the angel of God came again to the woman while she was out in the field; but her husband Manoah was not with her.

The woman hurried to tell her husband, "He's here! The man who appeared to me the other day!"

이 말을 듣고 그는 남편에게 가서 말하였다. "하느님의 사람이 저에게 나타났습니다. 그의 생김새는 하느님의 천사 같아서 어찌나 위엄차던지 저는 그분이 어디서 오셨는가 묻지도 못했습니다. 그분은 저에게 성함을 일러주시지도 않았습니다.

그런데 그분은 제가 임신하여 아들을 낳을 것이라고 하시면서 이제부터 포도주나 소주를 마시지 말고 부정한 것을 일절 먹지 말라고 하셨습니다. 또 저에게서 태어날 아이는 임신되는 날부터 죽을 때까지 하느님께 바친 나지르인이 될 것이라고 하셨습니다."

이 말을 듣고 마노아는 야훼께 빌었다. "주여, 바라옵건대 주께서 보내셨던 그 하느님의 사람을 다시 보내셔서 아이가 태어난 다음 그 아이를 어떻게 할지 우리에게 가르쳐주게 하십시오."

야훼께서 마노아의 기도를 들으시고, 당신의 천사를 다시 보내시어 마노아의 아내가 들에 앉아 있을 때에 나타나게 하셨다. 그 때 남편 마노아는 함께 있지 않았다.

여인은 급히 뛰어가 남편에게 일렀다. "전날 저에게 나타나셨던 분이 다시 나타나셨습니다."

Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he came to the man, he said, "Are you the one who talked to my wife?" "I am," he said.

So Manoah asked him, "When your words are fulfilled, what is to be the rule for the boy's life and work?"

The angel of the LORD answered, "Your wife must do all that I have told her.

She must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, nor drink any wine or other fermented drink nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her."

Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, "We would like you to stay until we prepare a young goat for you."

마노아는 곧 아내를 뒤쫓아가서, 당신이 저번에 아내에게 말하던 분이냐고 묻고는, 그가 그렇다고 대답하자

그에게 물었다. "그 때 하신 말씀이 이루어져 아이가 태어나면 그 아이는 무슨 일을 어떻게 할 것입니까?"

야훼의 천사가 마노아에게 일러주었다. "내가 네 아내에게 이미 일러둔 것을 하나도 빠뜨리지 않고 지켜야 한다.

포도나무에 열리는 것을 먹으면 안 된다. 포도주와 소주를 마시지 말고 부정한 것을 일절 먹지 마라. 그리하여 내가 네 아내에게 일러준 이 모든 명령을 지켜야 한다."

이 말을 듣고 마노아는 야훼의 천사에게 청을 드렸다. "새끼 염소를 한 마리 잡아 올리겠으니 좀 기다려주십시오."

The angel of the LORD replied, "Even though you detain me, I will not eat any of your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the LORD." (Manoah did not realize that it was the angel of the LORD.)

Then Manoah inquired of the angel of the LORD, "What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word comes true?"

He replied, "Why do you ask my name? It is beyond understanding. "

Then Manoah took a young goat, together with the grain offering, and sacrificed it on a rock to the LORD. And the LORD did an amazing thing while Manoah and his wife watched:

As the flame blazed up from the altar toward heaven, the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame. Seeing this, Manoah and his wife fell with their faces to the ground.

그러면서도 마노아는 그분이 야훼의 천사라는 것을 알지 못하였다. 야훼의 천사가 마노아에게 일렀다. "기다릴 수야 있겠지만, 대접은 못 받는다. 번제를 바칠 마음이 있으면 야훼께 바쳐라."

"그러면 성함이라도 알려주십시오. 그래야 하신 말씀이 이루어진 다음 그 고마운 심정을 표시해 올릴 수 있지 않겠습니까?" 하고 마노아가 야훼의 천사에게 청을 드려보았지만,

야훼의 천사는 "어디라고 내 이름을 묻는 거냐?" 하며 자기 이름은 비밀이라고 잘라 말했다.

그제야 마노아는 새끼 염소 한 마리와 곡식예물을 가져다가 바위 위에 올려놓고 야훼께 드렸다. 그러자 마노아와 그의 아내가 보는 앞에서 놀라운 일이 일어났다.

불길이 제단에서 하늘로 치솟는데 야훼의 천사가 그 불길을 타고 올라가는 것이었다. 이를 보고 마노아와 그의 아내는 땅에 엎드렸다.

When the angel of the LORD did not show himself again to Manoah and his wife, Manoah realized that it was the angel of the LORD.

"We are doomed to die!" he said to his wife. "We have seen God!"

But his wife answered, "If the LORD had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and grain offering from our hands, nor shown us all these things or now told us this."

The woman gave birth to a boy and named him Samson. He grew and the LORD blessed him,

and the Spirit of the LORD began to stir him while he was in Mahaneh Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

그 후로 야훼의 천사는 마노아와 그의 아내에게 다시 나타나지 않았다. 그제야 마노아는 그분이 야훼의 천사였다는 것을 깨달았다.

"거룩한 분을 뵈었으니, 우리는 영락없이 죽게 되었어." 하고 마노아가 아내에게 걱정스러운 소리를 했지만,

그의 아내는 이렇게 말하였다. "만일 야훼께서 우리를 죽이실 생각이셨다면 우리가 드린 번제물과 곡식예물을 받지 않으셨을 것 아닙니까? 그리고 이 모든 일들을 알려주시지도 않으셨을 것 아닙니까?"

여인은 아들을 낳아 이름을 삼손이라 지어주었다. 아이는 야훼께서 내리시는 복을 받으며 자랐다.

삼손이 소라와 에스다올 사이에 있는 단의 진지에 있을 때 야훼의 영이 처음 그에게 내렸다.

	블레셋 여인과의 결혼(14:1-14:20)

Samson went down to Timnah and saw there a young Philistine woman.

When he returned, he said to his father and mother, "I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife."

His father and mother replied, "Isn't there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?" But Samson said to his father, "Get her for me. She's the right one for me."

(His parents did not know that this was from the LORD, who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines; for at that time they were ruling over Israel.)

Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him.

삼손은 딤나로 내려갔다가 거기에서 불레셋 처녀 하나를 보고

부모에게로 돌아와서 청을 드렸다. "제가 딤나에 갔다가 불레셋 처녀 하나를 보았습니다. 그 처녀한테 장가들고 싶은데 얻어주십시오."

그러나 그의 부모는 그러지 못한다고 하였다. "네 일족이나 네 겨레 가운데는 여자가 없어서 할례도 받지 않은 불레셋 색시를 얻으려느냐?" 삼손은 아버지를 졸랐다. "그 여자가 좋은 걸 어떻게 합니까? 그 색시를 얻게 해주십시오."

그러나 그의 부모는 이 일이 모두 야훼께서 하시는 일인 줄 몰랐다. 그 때는 불레셋 사람들이 이스라엘을 지배하던 때였기에 야훼께서 불레셋 사람들을 칠 구실을 마련하시려는 것이었다.

삼손이 딤나로 내려가서 딤나에 있는 한 포도원에 다다랐을 때의 일이다. 난데없이 어린 사자 한 마리가 으르렁거리며 달려드는 것이었다.

The Spirit of the LORD came upon him in power so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done.

Then he went down and talked with the woman, and he liked her.

Some time later, when he went back to marry her, he turned aside to look at the lion's carcass. In it was a swarm of bees and some honey,

which he scooped out with his hands and ate as he went along. When he rejoined his parents, he gave them some, and they too ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion's carcass.

Now his father went down to see the woman. And Samson made a feast there, as was customary for bridegrooms.

그 때 야훼의 영이 갑자기 내리덮쳐 삼손은 양새끼 찢듯 맨손으로 그 사자를 갈기갈기 찢었다. 그는 이 일을 부모에게도 알리지 않고,

그 여인에게로 내려가 이야기해 주었다. 그렇게 그 여인에게 빠져 있었다.

얼마 후 삼손은 그 여자를 아내로 맞으러 가다가, 가던 길을 벗어나 죽은 사자가 있는 데로 가서 그 죽은 사자 몸에 벌이 꿀을 쳐놓은 것을 보았다.

그는 손으로 꿀을 좀 따 가지고 길을 가면서 먹었다. 돌아오는 길에는 얼마 따다가 부모에게도 대접해 드렸다. 그러면서도 그 꿀이 죽은 사자 몸에서 나온 것이라는 말만은 하지 않았다.

삼손은 그 여자에게로 내려가서 젊은이가 장가갈 때 하는 풍속대로 잔치를 벌였다.

When he appeared, he was given thirty companions.

"Let me tell you a riddle," Samson said to them. "If you can give me the answer within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.

If you can't tell me the answer, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes." "Tell us your riddle," they said. "Let's hear it."

He replied, "Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet." For three days they could not give the answer.

On the fourth day, they said to Samson's wife, "Coax your husband into explaining the riddle for us, or we will burn you and your father's household to death. Did you invite us here to rob us?"

그러나 그들은 삼손이 무서워서 들러리를 삼십 명이나 뽑아 함께 머물게 하였다.

그 자리에서 삼손이 그들에게 말하였다. "내가 수수께끼 하나를 낼 터이니, 잔치가 계속되는 이레 동안 생각해서 맞혀보게. 알아내기만 하면 내가 모시옷 서른 벌과 예복 서른 벌을 내지.

그러나 알아내지 못하면 자네들이 나에게 모시옷 서른 벌과 예복 서른 벌을 내야 하네." 그들은 좋다고 하면서 수수께끼를 말해 보라고 하였다.

그래서 그는 수수께끼를 내놓았다. "먹는 자에게서 먹는 것이 나오고 힘센 자에게서 단 것이 나오는데, 그것이 무엇인가?"그들은 사흘이 지나도록 그 수수께끼를 풀지 못했다.

나흘째 되던 날 그들은 삼손의 아내에게 을러메었다. "네 신랑을 꾀어 그 수수께끼의 답을 알아내서 알려다오. 그렇지 않으면 네 일족을 불에 태워 죽이겠다. 네가 우리를 초대해 놓고는 홀랑 벗길 셈이냐?"

Then Samson's wife threw herself on him, sobbing, "You hate me! You don't really love me. You've given my people a riddle, but you haven't told me the answer." "I haven't even explained it to my father or mother," he replied, "so why should I explain it to you?"

She cried the whole seven days of the feast. So on the seventh day he finally told her, because she continued to press him. She in turn explained the riddle to her people.

Before sunset on the seventh day the men of the town said to him, "What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?" Samson said to them, "If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have solved my riddle."

Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon him in power. He went down to Ashkelon, struck down thirty of their men, stripped them of their belongings and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. Burning with anger, he went up to his father's house.

And Samson's wife was given to the friend who had attended him at his wedding.

삼손의 아내는 그에게 매달려 눈물을 흘리며 떼를 썼다. "당신은 나를 사랑하는 것이 아니라 미워하고 있어요. 우리 동족들에게 수수께끼를 내놓으셨지만, 그것이 무엇인지 저한테마저 숨기실 건 없지 않아요?" 삼손은 "그것은 내 부모에게조차 알리지 않았는데 어찌 당신에게라고 말하겠소?" 하면서 거절했지만,

잔치가 끝나기까지 이레 동안 색시가 매달려 울면서 조르는 바람에, 이레째 되던 날 털어놓고야 말았다. 색시는 그 수수께끼의 답이 무엇인지 제 동족들에게 일러주었다.

이레째 되는 날이 와서 삼손이 신방에 들려고 하는데, 그 성 사람들이 그에게 말하였다. "꿀보다 단 것이 어디 있고 사자보다 힘센 것이 어디 있으랴?""자네들이 내 암소로 밭을 갈았구나. 그래서 내 수수께끼를 알아맞힌 거지?" 삼손은 이렇게 말하고는

야훼의 영에 사로잡혀, 아스클론으로 내려가 거기에서 삼십 명을 죽이고 그들의 나들이옷을 벗겨 수수께끼를 알아맞힌 사람들에게 주고는 화가 나서 자기 집으로 돌아왔다.

일이 이쯤 되자 삼손의 아내는 들러리들 가운데 어떤 한 사람에게 시집가고 말았다.
