	열왕기상 20:22-21:29 1차 침공에 실패한 벤하닷은 2차 침공을 감행했고, 이스라엘은 전력의 열세에도 불구하고 하나님의 도우심으로 다시 대승을 거두었다. 그러나 아합은 하나님의 뜻을 벗어나 임의대로 벤하닷을 살려 줌으로써 하나님의 선지자로부터 심판을 예고받았다. 탐욕에 사로잡힌 아합이 나봇을 살해하고 그의 포도원을 빼앗자, 엘리야는 그에게 하나님의 심판을 선포하였다.

	벤하닷을 살려 준 아합(20:22-20:43)

Afterward, the prophet came to the king of Israel and said, "Strengthen your position and see what must be done, because next spring the king of Aram will attack you again."

Meanwhile, the officials of the king of Aram advised him, "Their gods are gods of the hills. That is why they were too strong for us. But if we fight them on the plains, surely we will be stronger than they.

Do this: Remove all the kings from their commands and replace them with other officers.

You must also raise an army like the one you lost--horse for horse and chariot for chariot--so we can fight Israel on the plains. Then surely we will be stronger than they." He agreed with them and acted accordingly.

The next spring Ben-Hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.

그 예언자가 다시 이스라엘 왕에게 와서 말하였다. "임금께서는 마음을 든든히 잡수시고 심사숙고하십시오. 새해가 되면 시리아 왕이 다시 쳐들어옵니다."

시리아 왕의 신하들이 왕에게 말하였다. "그들의 신은 산신입니다. 이것이 이번에 우리가 패전한 이유입니다. 그러나 평지에서 싸우면 반드시 우리가 이길 것입니다.

이렇게 하시는 것이 좋을 줄로 아룁니다. 지방영주들을 물러 앉히고 그 자리에 전투 지휘관들을 임명, 배치하십시오.

이번 전쟁에서 잃은 병사와 군마, 병거를 보충하셔야 합니다. 그 후에 평지에서 싸운다면 반드시 승리할 수 있습니다." 그는 신하들의 말을 듣고 그대로 하였다.

해가 바뀌자 벤하닷은 시리아 군을 총동원하여 이스라엘을 공격하려고 아벡으로 올라갔다.

When the Israelites were also mustered and given provisions, they marched out to meet them. The Israelites camped opposite them like two small flocks of goats, while the Arameans covered the countryside.

The man of God came up and told the king of Israel, "This is what the LORD says: 'Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands, and you will know that I am the LORD.' "

For seven days they camped opposite each other, and on the seventh day the battle was joined. The Israelites inflicted a hundred thousand casualties on the Aramean foot soldiers in one day.

The rest of them escaped to the city of Aphek, where the wall collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of them. And Ben-Hadad fled to the city and hid in an inner room.

His officials said to him, "Look, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful. Let us go to the king of Israel with sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will spare your life."

이스라엘 군도 총동원되어 그들을 맞아 싸우러 나갔다. 그런데 시리아 군은 온 벌판을 뒤덮었는데 그들 앞에 진을 친 이스라엘 군은 마치 두 염소떼 같았다.

그 때 하느님의 사람이 이스라엘 왕에게 와서 말하였다. "야훼께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. '시리아인들은 야훼가 산신이고 벌판의 신이 아니라고 한다. 내가 이제 저 대군을 너의 손에 부치리니, 너는 내가 바로 야훼임을 알게 되리라.'"

양쪽 군대는 서로 마주보고 칠 일간 대진하고 있다가 이레째 되는 날에 드디어 싸움에 들어갔다. 이스라엘 군은 적군인 시리아의 보병을 그 하루 동안에 십만 명이나 죽였다.

적의 패잔병들은 아벡 성으로 후퇴하였는데 마침 성벽이 무너져 패잔병 중 이만 칠천 명이 깔려 죽었다. 벤하닷은 도망하여 성채 안 골방으로 들어갔다.

그 때 그의 신하들이 그에게 말하였다. "우리가 듣자니 이스라엘의 역대 왕들은 신의를 지킨다고 합니다. 우리가 굵은 베 옷을 허리에 걸치고 머리에 새끼줄을 감고 이스라엘 왕에게 나가보겠습니다. 혹시 그가 임금님은 살려줄지도 모릅니다."

Wearing sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, "Your servant Ben-Hadad says: 'Please let me live.' " The king answered, "Is he still alive? He is my brother."

The men took this as a good sign and were quick to pick up his word. "Yes, your brother Ben-Hadad!" they said. "Go and get him," the king said. When Ben-Hadad came out, Ahab had him come up into his chariot.

"I will return the cities my father took from your father," Ben-Hadad offered. "You may set up your own market areas in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria." Ahab said, "On the basis of a treaty I will set you free." So he made a treaty with him, and let him go.

By the word of the LORD one of the sons of the prophets said to his companion, "Strike me with your weapon," but the man refused.

So the prophet said, "Because you have not obeyed the LORD, as soon as you leave me a lion will kill you." And after the man went away, a lion found him and killed him.

그리하여 그들은 굵은 베 옷을 허리에 걸치고 새끼줄을 머리에 감고 이스라엘 왕에게 가서 간청하였다. "대왕의 신하 벤하닷이 목숨을 살려주시기를 빌고 있습니다." 그러자 이스라엘 왕은 "그가 죽지 않고 살아 있단 말이냐? 그는 내 의형제이다." 하고 말하였다.

이 말을 듣자 그들은 일이 잘 되어간다는 것을 알아차리고, 때를 놓칠세라 "네. 벤하닷은 대왕의 의형제입니다." 하고 말하였다. 그러자 왕이 명령을 내렸다. "가서 그를 데리고 오도록 하여라." 그리하여 벤하닷이 이스라엘 왕에게 나오자 아합 왕은 그를 자기의 수레에 태웠다.

벤하닷이 아합 왕에게 말하였다. "나의 부친이 당신의 부친에게서 빼앗은 모든 성들을 돌려드리겠습니다. 나의 부친께서 사마리아에 무역 시장을 열었듯이 당신도 다마스쿠스에 무역 시장을 열도록 하십시오. 이런 조건으로 이 몸을 놓아주시면 고맙겠습니다." 그래서 아합은 그와 조약을 맺고 놓아주었다.

예언자 단체의 한 회원이 야훼의 명을 받고 동료 한 사람에게 자기를 때리라고 부탁하였다. 그가 때리기를 거절하자

그 예언자는 말하였다. "자네가 야훼의 명령을 따르지 않았으므로 나가다가 길에서 사자를 만나 죽을 것이다." 과연 그 사람은 길을 떠나가다가 사자를 만나 죽었다.

The prophet found another man and said, "Strike me, please." So the man struck him and wounded him.

Then the prophet went and stood by the road waiting for the king. He disguised himself with his headband down over his eyes.

As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him, "Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and someone came to me with a captive and said, 'Guard this man. If he is missing, it will be your life for his life, or you must pay a talent of silver.'

While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared." "That is your sentence," the king of Israel said. "You have pronounced it yourself."

Then the prophet quickly removed the headband from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets.

예언자가 또 다른 사람을 만나서 자기를 때려달라고 부탁하였다. 그는 예언자를 때려 상처를 입혔다.

예언자는 눈을 천으로 감아 변장하고 왕이 지나갈 길목에 가서 왕을 기다렸다.

왕이 지나는데 그가 왕을 불러 말하였다. "임금님, 소인이 싸움이 한창 벌어진 곳을 지나오는데 어떤 사람이 포로를 하나 데리고 전쟁터를 벗어나 저에게 와서는 이렇게 말하였습니다. '이 사람을 잘 감시하여라. 만일 놓치면 네가 대신 죽으리라. 죽기 싫으면 몸값으로 은 한 달란트를 내야 한다.'

그런데 소인이 이 일 저 일로 분주하여 정신이 없는 틈을 타서 포로가 도망치고 말았습니다." 여기까지 말을 듣고 이스라엘 왕은 "그렇다면 그대로 당해야지. 네 스스로 판결을 내렸으니까." 하고 말하였다.

그러자 그 예언자는 눈을 싸매었던 천을 재빨리 풀었다. 그제야 이스라엘 왕은 그가 예언자임을 알아보았다.

He said to the king, "This is what the LORD says: 'You have set free a man I had determined should die. Therefore it is your life for his life, your people for his people.' "

Sullen and angry, the king of Israel went to his palace in Samaria.

예언자가 왕에게 말하였다. "야훼께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. '너는 내가 죽여야 할 자를 놓아주었다. 그러니 내가 너를 대신 죽이겠다. 또 그의 백성 대신에 너의 백성을 멸하리라.'"

이스라엘 왕은 침울한 심정이 되어 사마리아에 있는 궁으로 돌아갔다.

	나봇의 포도원(21:1-21:29)

Some time later there was an incident involving a vineyard belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. The vineyard was in Jezreel, close to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

Ahab said to Naboth, "Let me have your vineyard to use for a vegetable garden, since it is close to my palace. In exchange I will give you a better vineyard or, if you prefer, I will pay you whatever it is worth."

But Naboth replied, "The LORD forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers."

So Ahab went home, sullen and angry because Naboth the Jezreelite had said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." He lay on his bed sulking and refused to eat.

His wife Jezebel came in and asked him, "Why are you so sullen? Why won't you eat?"

그 후에 일어난 일이다. 나봇이라는 이즈르엘 사람이 포도원을 하나 가지고 있었는데 그 포도원은 사마리아를 다스리고 있는 아합의 별궁 근처에 있었다.

어느 날 아합 왕이 나봇을 만나 말하였다. "그대의 포도원은 내 별궁 근처에 있으니 나에게 양도하게. 그것을 정원으로 만들고 싶네. 그 대신 그대에게는 더 좋은 포도원을 마련해 주지. 만약 그대가 원한다면 그 값을 시가로 따져서 현금으로 계산해 줄 수도 있네."

그러나 나봇은 아합 왕의 청을 거절하였다. "선조들에게서 물려받은 이 포도원을 임금님께 드릴 수는 없습니다. 천벌을 받을 짓입니다."

이즈르엘 사람 나봇이 선조의 유산이란 이유로 요구를 거절하자 아합 왕은 침울한 심정이 되어 별궁으로 돌아가 자리에 누워 이불을 얼굴까지 뒤집어쓰고 음식도 들려고 하지 않았다.

그의 아내 이세벨이 들어와서 물었다. "무슨 일로 이렇게 상심이 되시어 음식까지 물리치십니까?"

He answered her, "Because I said to Naboth the Jezreelite, 'Sell me your vineyard; or if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard in its place.' But he said, 'I will not give you my vineyard.' "

Jezebel his wife said, "Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I'll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite."

So she wrote letters in Ahab's name, placed his seal on them, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth's city with him.

In those letters she wrote: "Proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people.

But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them testify that he has cursed both God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death."

왕이 말하였다. "내가 이즈르엘 사람 나봇이란 자에게 그의 포도원을 시가대로 팔거나, 아니면 다른 포도원과 바꿔달라고 하였소. 그런데 그자가 포도원을 내놓지 못하겠다는 것이오."

그러자 그의 아내 이세벨이 말하였다. "당신은 이스라엘의 왕답게 처신하십시오. 제발 일어나셔서 기분을 돌리고 음식을 드셔요. 내가 이즈르엘 사람 나봇의 포도원을 당신께 선물로 드리리다."

그 여자는 아합의 이름으로 밀서를 써서 옥새로 봉인하고 그것을 나봇이 살고 있는 성읍의 시의회에 나봇과 한자리에 앉아 있는 원로들과 지방 어른들에게 보냈다.

그 밀서의 내용은 이러하였다. "단식을 선포하고 백성들 앞에서 나봇을 상석에 앉힌 다음,

무뢰배 둘을 그 맞은편에 앉혀 나봇이 하느님과 왕을 욕하였다고 고발하게 하여라. 그리고는 그를 밖으로 끌어내어 돌로 쳐서 죽여라."

So the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth's city did as Jezebel directed in the letters she had written to them.

They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth in a prominent place among the people.

Then two scoundrels came and sat opposite him and brought charges against Naboth before the people, saying, "Naboth has cursed both God and the king." So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death.

Then they sent word to Jezebel: "Naboth has been stoned and is dead."

As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, "Get up and take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite that he refused to sell you. He is no longer alive, but dead."

나봇이 살고 있는 그 성읍의 시의회에 나봇과 동석하는 원로들과 지방 어른들은 이세벨이 밀서에서 지시한 대로 하였다.

그들은 단식을 선포하고 백성들 앞에서 나봇을 상석에 앉힌 다음,

무뢰배 둘로 하여금 그와 마주앉아 나봇을 고발하게 하였다. "나봇은 하느님과 왕을 욕하였습니다." 그들은 나봇을 성 밖으로 끌고 나가 돌로 쳐죽인 다음,

이세벨에게 나봇을 돌로 쳐죽였다고 보고하였다.

이세벨은 나봇이 돌에 맞아 죽었다는 보고를 받고 아합 왕에게 말하였다. "일어나셔서 이즈르엘 사람 나봇이 팔지 않겠다고 한 그 포도원을 차지하십시오. 나봇은 이제 이 세상 사람이 아닙니다."

When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up and went down to take possession of Naboth's vineyard.

Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite:

"Go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He is now in Naboth's vineyard, where he has gone to take possession of it.

Say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: Have you not murdered a man and seized his property?' Then say to him, 'This is what the LORD says: In the place where dogs licked up Naboth's blood, dogs will lick up your blood--yes, yours!' "

Ahab said to Elijah, "So you have found me, my enemy!" "I have found you," he answered, "because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD.

나봇이 죽었다는 말을 듣자, 아합은 일어나 이즈르엘 사람 나봇의 소유였던 포도원을 차지하기 위하여 내려갔다.

이 때 야훼의 말씀이 디스베 사람 엘리야에게 내렸다.

"일어나서 사마리아에 있는 이스라엘 왕 아합에게 내려가거라. 그는 지금 나봇의 포도원을 차지하려고 그 곳에 내려가 있다.

가서 그에게 야훼의 말이라 하고 이렇게 전하여라. '네가 사람을 죽이고 그의 땅마저 빼앗는구나.' 또 야훼의 말이라 하고 이렇게 전하여라. '나봇의 피를 핥던 개들이 같은 자리에서 네 피도 핥으리라.'"

아합 왕이 엘리야에게 말하였다. "이 원수야, 또 나타났구나!" 엘리야가 대답하였다. "당신은 목숨을 내던져 가며 야훼의 눈에 거슬리는 일을 하려고 합니다. 그래서 이렇게 나타났습니다."

'I am going to bring disaster on you. I will consume your descendants and cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel--slave or free.

I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have provoked me to anger and have caused Israel to sin.'

"And also concerning Jezebel the LORD says: 'Dogs will devour Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.'

"Dogs will eat those belonging to Ahab who die in the city, and the birds of the air will feed on those who die in the country."

(There was never a man like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD, urged on by Jezebel his wife.

엘리야는 계속하여 야훼의 말씀을 전하였다. "나 이제 너에게 재앙을 내리리라. 나는 네 후손을 모조리 쓸어버리고 이스라엘에 있는 아합의 가문에 속한 사내는 자유인이든 종이든 씨도 없이 죽이리라.

나는 너의 왕조를 느밧의 아들 여로보암과 아히야의 아들 바아사의 왕조처럼 만들리라. 네가 이스라엘을 죄에 빠뜨려 그토록 내 속을 썩였는데 어찌 그냥 내버려두겠느냐?"

야훼의 말씀은 이세벨을 두고 계속되었다. "개들이 이즈르엘 성 밖에서 이세벨을 찢으리라.

아합 가문에 속한 자가 성 안에서 죽으면 개들이 뜯어먹고 성 밖에서 죽으면 새들이 쪼아먹으리라."

아합처럼 아내 이세벨의 농간에 빠져서 목숨을 내던져 가며 야훼의 눈에 거슬리는 일을 한 사람은 일찍이 없었다.

He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites the LORD drove out before Israel.)

When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly.

Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite:

"Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day, but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son."

아합은 참으로 못할 짓을 하였다. 그는 야훼께서 이스라엘 백성 면전에서 쫓아내신 아모리 사람들을 본떠 우상을 만들어 섬겼다.

아합은 이 말을 다 듣고 나서 자기 옷을 찢으며 굵은 베 옷을 걸치고 단식에 들어갔다. 그는 굵은 베 옷을 입은 채 자리에 누웠고 일어나 거닐면서도 풀이 죽어 있었다.

이 때 디스베 사람 엘리야에게 야훼의 말씀이 내렸다.

"네가 보다시피 아합은 내 앞에서 얼굴도 들지 못하고 있다. 그가 자기 자신을 내 앞에서 그토록 낮추었으므로 내가 그의 생전에는 이 재앙을 내리지 아니하리라. 그러나 그의 아들대에 가서 그 가문에 재앙을 내리리라."
