- Do you not know, brothers--for I am speaking to men who know the law--that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?
- For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.
- So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man.
- So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.
- For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death.

- 형제 여러분, 여러분이 법률에 정통한 사람들이니 말씀 드리는데, 법률이란 것은 사람이 살아 있는 동안에만 구속력을 가진다는 것을 모르십니까?
- 결혼한 여자는 남편이 살아 있는 동안에만 자기 남편에게 법적으로 매여 있습니다. 그러나 남편이 죽으면 그 남편에 대해서는 법적으로 제약을 받지 않습니다.
- 따라서 자기 남편이 살아 있는 동안에 다른 남자와 사는 여자는 간음한 여자라는 말을 듣게 됩니다. 그러나 남편이 죽으면 여자는 그 법의 제약을 받지 않기 때문에 다른 남자와 결혼하더라도 간음하는 것이 아닙니다.
- 친애하는 형제 여러분, 여러분도 이와 같이 그리스도와 한몸이 되어 죽음으로써 율법의 제약에서 벗어나 다른 분 곧, 죽은 자들 가운데서 살아나신 그리스도의 사람이 되고 하느님께 유용한 사람들이 되었습니다.
- 전에 우리가 육적인 생활을 하고 있을 때에는 율법 때문에 우리의 온몸에 죄스러운 욕정이 발동하여 죽음을 가져왔습니다.

- But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
- What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "Do not covet."
- But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead.
- Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.
- I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death.

- 우리는 율법에 사로잡혀 있었지만 이제 우리는 죽어서 그 제약을 벗어났습니다. 그래서 우리는 낡은 법조문을 따라서 섬기지 않고 성령께서 주시는 새 생명을 가지고 섬기게 되었습니다.
- 그러면 율법이 곧 죄라고 말할 수 있겠습니까? 절대로 그럴 수 없습니다. 그러나 율법이 없었던들 나는 죄를 몰랐을 것입니다. 탐내지 말라는 율법이 없었더라면 탐욕이 죄라는 것을 나는 몰랐을 것입니다.
- 죄는 이 계명을 기화로 내 속에 온갖 탐욕을 일으켰습니다. 율법이 없다면 죄는 죽은 것이나 다름없습니다.
- 나는 전에 율법이 없을 때에는 살았었는데 계명이 들어오자 죄는 살아나고
- 나는 죽었습니다. 그래서 생명을 가져다 주어야 할 그 계명이 나에게 오히려 죽음을 가져왔다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

- For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death.
- So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.
- Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! But in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.
- We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.
- I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

- 다시 말하면 죄가 계명을 기화로 나를 속이고 그 계명으로 나를 죽인 것입니다.
- 그러나 율법은 어디까지나 거룩하고 계명도 거룩하고 정당하고 좋은 것입니다.
- 그러면 그 좋은 것이 나에게 죽음을 가져왔다는 말입니까? 절대로 그렇지 않습니다. 사실은 죄가 그 좋은 것을 매개로 해서 나에게 죽음을 가져왔습니다. 그래서 죄는 죄로 드러나게 되고 계명으로 말미암아 그 죄가 얼마나 악독한 것인지가 드러나게 되었습니다.
- 우리가 아는 대로 율법 자체는 영적인 것입니다. 그런데 나는 육정을 따라 사는 사람으로서 죄의 종으로 팔린 몸입니다.
- 나는 내가 하는 일을 도무지 알 수가 없습니다. 내가 해야겠다고 생각하는 일은 하지 않고 도리어 해서는 안 되겠다고 생각하는 일을 하고 있으니 말입니다.

- And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.
- As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.
- I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
- For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing.
- Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

- 그런데 그런 일을 하면서도 그것을 해서는 안 되겠다고 생각하는 것은 곧 율법이 좋다는 것을 인정하는 것입니다.
- 그렇다면 그런 일을 하는 것은 내가 아니라 내 속에 도사리고 있는 죄입니다.
- 내 속에 곧 내 육체 속에는 선한 것이 하나도 들어 있지 않다는 것을 나는 알고 있습니다. 마음으로는 선을 행하려고 하면서도 나에게는 그것을 실천할 힘이 없습니다.
- 나는 내가 해야 하겠다고 생각하는 선은 행하지 않고 해서는 안 되겠다고 생각하는 악을 행하고 있습니다.
- 그런 일을 하면서도 그것을 해서는 안 되겠다고 생각하고 있으니 결국 그런 일을 하는 것은 내가 아니라 내 속에 들어 있는 죄입니다.
