느헤미야 5:1-6:19

 성벽 공사가 어렵게 진행되는 동안 백성들 사이에서 취리 행위로 인한 문제가 발생하였고, 백성들은 부르짖어 불평하였다. 이에 느헤미야는 취리 행위를 금지시키고 발생한 문제들을 해결하였다. 또한 대적들은 느헤미야를 죽이려는 음모를 꾸몄으나 실패로 돌아갔다. 성벽 건축은 완료되었다.
  
  가난한 자들을 도움(5:1-5:19)    
 
  1. Now the men and their wives raised a great outcry against their Jewish brothers.
  2. Some were saying, "We and our sons and daughters are numerous; in order for us to eat and stay alive, we must get grain."
  3. Others were saying, "We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards and our homes to get grain during the famine."
  4. Still others were saying, "We have had to borrow money to pay the king's tax on our fields and vineyards.
  5. Although we are of the same flesh and blood as our countrymen and though our sons are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others."
  1. 그런데 백성들 중의 일부 유다인 동족들에게 불평이 생겨 여자들까지 아우성을 치는 일이 벌어졌다.
  2. "살아 보겠다고, 목에 풀칠이라도 해야겠다고, 우리는 아들 딸을 잡혔다." 하는 사람이 있는가 하면,
  3. "흉년이 들어 입에 풀칠이라도 해야겠어서 우리는 밭도 포도원도 집도 모두 잡혔다." 하는 사람도 있고,
  4. "황제에게 세금 낼 돈이 없어서 우리는 밭도 포도원도 모두 잡혔다." 하며 외치는 사람도 있었다.
  5. "한 겨레인데 저희 살이나 우리 살이나 무엇이 다르냐? 제 자식이 아까우면 남의 자식 아까운 줄도 알아야 할 것이 아니냐? 우리 꼴을 보아라. 우리는 제 아들 딸을 종으로 팔아 먹는 신세다. 딸들이 짓밟히는데도 우리는 어떻게 손쓸 힘이 없구나. 우리 밭이나 포도원은 이미 남의 손에 들어가고 말았다."
  1. When I heard their outcry and these charges, I was very angry.
  2. I pondered them in my mind and then accused the nobles and officials. I told them, "You are exacting usury from your own countrymen!" So I called together a large meeting to deal with them
  3. and said: "As far as possible, we have bought back our Jewish brothers who were sold to the Gentiles. Now you are selling your brothers, only for them to be sold back to us!" They kept quiet, because they could find nothing to say.
  4. So I continued, "What you are doing is not right. Shouldn't you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of our Gentile enemies?
  5. I and my brothers and my men are also lending the people money and grain. But let the exacting of usury stop!
  1. 이러한 아우성 소리를 듣고 나는 매우 화가 났지만,
  2. 마음을 억누르며 회의를 소집하여 유지들과 관리들을 모아놓고 어찌하여 한 겨레끼리 돈놀이를 하느냐고 호되게 꾸중을 하였다.
  3. "유다인들은 우리와 한 겨레요. 그 우리의 겨레가 남의 나라에 팔려갔던 것을 우리는 일껏 찾아왔소. 그런데 그대들은 제 겨레를 또 팔아 먹다니, 우리더러 다시 찾아오라는 말이오?" 그들이 입을 다문 채 아무 말도 못하는 것을 보고
  4. 나는 말을 이었다. "이건 정말 못할 짓이오. 우리를 미워하는 다른 나라 사람들에게 욕이라도 얻어 먹지 않으려면 하느님 두려운 줄 알고 살아야 할 것 아니오?
  5. 나도, 내 일가도, 내 수하 사람들도 돈놀이를 하여 장리변을 놓아 왔지만, 우리는 그 변리를 포기하기로 하였소.
  1. Give back to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves and houses, and also the usury you are charging them--the hundredth part of the money, grain, new wine and oil."
  2. "We will give it back," they said. "And we will not demand anything more from them. We will do as you say." Then I summoned the priests and made the nobles and officials take an oath to do what they had promised.
  3. I also shook out the folds of my robe and said, "In this way may God shake out of his house and possessions every man who does not keep this promise. So may such a man be shaken out and emptied!" At this the whole assembly said, "Amen," and praised the LORD. And the people did as they had promised.
  4. Moreover, from the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, until his thirty-second year--twelve years--neither I nor my brothers ate the food allotted to the governor.
  5. But the earlier governors--those preceding me--placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God I did not act like that.
  1. 그러니 그대들도 잡았던 밭이나 포도원이나 올리브 밭이나 집을 오늘 당장 돌려주도록 하시오. 또 돈이나 곡식이나 포도주나 올리브 기름을 꾸어주고 변리를 받았거든 그것도 돌려주도록 하시오."
  2. "말씀대로 돌려주고 변리를 거두어들이지 않겠습니다." 하고 그들은 대답하였다. 그 말을 듣고 나는 사제들을 불러 그대로 하겠다는 서약을 받게 하였다.
  3. 그리고 나는 내 옷자락을 털며 말했다. "이 말을 지키지 않으면, 누구든지 하느님께서 이렇게 털어버리실 것이오. 그의 성전에 들어가서 주시는 것을 받아 먹지 못하고 빈털터리로 떨려날 것이오." 온 회중은 "아멘." 하며 야훼를 찬양하였다. 이렇게 해서 백성은 서약한 대로 하였다.
  4. 아르닥사싸 황제 제이십년부터 삼십이년까지 십이년 동안 나는 유다 총독 노릇을 하였지만, 나와 나의 일가는 총독으로서 받아야 할 녹을 타먹지 않았다.
  5. 나의 선임 총독들은 양식과 술값으로 하루에 은 사십 세겔씩 거두어들였다. 이렇게 총독 자신들도 백성을 괴롭힌데다가 수하 사람들도 백성을 착취하였다. 그러나 나는 하느님이 두려워서 그런 일을 하지 않았다.
  1. Instead, I devoted myself to the work on this wall. All my men were assembled there for the work; we did not acquire any land.
  2. Furthermore, a hundred and fifty Jews and officials ate at my table, as well as those who came to us from the surrounding nations.
  3. Each day one ox, six choice sheep and some poultry were prepared for me, and every ten days an abundant supply of wine of all kinds. In spite of all this, I never demanded the food allotted to the governor, because the demands were heavy on these people.
  4. Remember me with favor, O my God, for all I have done for these people.
  1. 나는 밭 한 뙈기 못 얻었지만, 이 성을 쌓는 데 온 힘을 다 기울였다. 나의 수하 사람들도 그 일에 힘을 모았다.
  2. 인근 여러 나라에서 찾아오는 사람을 제외하고 내 식탁에서 먹는 유다인 관리들만도 백오십 명이나 되었다.
  3. 식탁에는 나의 부담으로 날마다 소 한 마리, 기름진 양 여섯 마리에 새고기도 올랐다. 갖가지 술도 한번 나오면 열흘씩 넉넉히 돌았다. 그러면서도 나는 총독으로서 받아야 할 녹을 요구하지 않았다. 그렇지 않아도 백성은 부역으로 허덕이는 형편이었기 때문이다.
  4. 나의 하느님이여, 이 몸이 이 백성을 위해 한 모든 일을 기억하시고 잘 보살펴 주십시오!
 
  대적들의 음모(6:1-6:19)    
 
  1. When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it--though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates-
  2. Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: "Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono." But they were scheming to harm me;
  3. so I sent messengers to them with this reply: "I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?"
  4. Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.
  5. Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter
  1. 마침내 내가 성 쌓는 일을 빈틈없이 다 마쳤다는 말이 산발랏, 토비야, 아랍인 게셈을 비롯한 우리 원수들의 귀에 들어갔다. 그 때는 아직 성문을 만들어 달지 못한 때였다.
  2. 산발랏과 게셈은 나에게 전갈을 보내 왔다. "오노 골짜기 하끄비림으로 오시오. 거기에서 좀 만납시다." 그러면서도 속셈은 나를 해치려는 데 있었으므로,
  3. 나는 사람을 보내어 이렇게 회답하였다. "나는 큰 공사를 벌여놓고 있어서 내려갈 수가 없소. 내가 일손을 놓고 당신들에게로 내려가면 일이 중단되므로 그럴 수가 없소."
  4. 그들은 같은 전갈을 네 번이나 보내 왔지만 나는 번번이 같은 말로 회답하였다.
  5. 산발랏은 다섯 번째로 사절을 시켜 같은 내용의 편지를 봉하지도 않고 보내 왔다.
  1. in which was written: "It is reported among the nations--and Geshem says it is true--that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king
  2. and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: 'There is a king in Judah!' Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us confer together."
  3. I sent him this reply: "Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head."
  4. They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed." But I prayed, "Now strengthen my hands."
  5. One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, "Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you--by night they are coming to kill you."
  1. 그 내용은 이러하였다. "그대가 유다인들을 부추겨 반란을 꾸민다는 말이 뭇 민족들 사이에 널리 퍼졌소. 게셈도 같은 말을 하고 있소. 그대가 성을 쌓는 데는 그런 속셈이 있다는 것이오. 결국은 그대가 유다인들의 왕이 되리라고들 말하고 있소.
  2. 그대를 예루살렘에서 왕으로 선포할 예언자들마저 임명해 두었다고들 하더이다. 이 말은 이제 황제 폐하의 귀에 들어가고 말 것이오. 그러니 좀 만납시다."
  3. 나는 이렇게 회신을 보냈다. "당신이 하는 말은 사실무근이오. 모두 다 당신이 조작해 낸 말이오."
  4. 이것은 우리에게 겁을 주어 모두 맥이 풀려 일을 그만두게 하려는 심산으로 하는 짓이었다. 그러나 나는 도리어 더 힘을 내었다.
  5. 그 때 들라야의 아들이요 므헤타브엘의 손자인 스마야라는 사람이 있었다. 그는 외출할 수 없는 몸이어서 내가 그의 집으로 갈 수밖에 없었다. 그는 이런 말을 하였다. "그들이 당신을 죽이러 올 터이니 하느님의 성전에서 다시 만나 본관에 들어가 문을 닫아 걸고 있도록 합시다. 그들이 오늘 밤 당신을 죽이러 옵니다."
  1. But I said, "Should a man like me run away? Or should one like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!"
  2. I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
  3. He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.
  4. Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who have been trying to intimidate me.
  5. So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.
  1. 나는 이렇게 대답하였다. "내가 어떤 사람인데 숨겠는가? 내가 어떤 사람인데 살아보겠다고 성전 본관에 들어가겠는가? 그럴 수 없다."
  2. 그가 하느님께서 보내신 사람이 아니라는 것을 나는 알아차렸다. 그는 토비야와 산발랏에게 매수되어 하느님의 말씀을 받았다면서 그런 말을 했던 것이다.
  3. 그들이 나에게 겁을 주어, 해서는 안 될 일을 하게 한 다음 나의 명성을 떨어뜨려 웃음거리로 만들려는 심산이었다.
  4. 나의 하느님이여, 토비야와 산발랏이 이런 못된 일을 하는 것을 잊지 마십시오. 여자 예언자 노아드야와 저에게 겁을 주려고 하는 그 밖의 예언자 무리도 잊지 마십시오!
  5. 엘룰월 이십오일, 오십이일 간에 걸친 성 수축 공사가 끝났다.
  1. When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.
  2. Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them.
  3. For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah.
  4. Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.
  1. 이 소식은 우리의 모든 원수들의 귀에 들어갔고, 우리 주위에 살던 뭇 민족들은 이 일을 눈으로 보고 매우 놀랐다. 그들은 그제야 이 일을 이룩하신 이가 다름 아닌 우리 하느님이심을 알게 되었다.
  2. 그 당시 많은 유다 유지들이 토비야와 자주 편지를 교환하고 있었다.
  3. 토비야는 아라의 아들 스가니야의 사위였고 그의 아들 여호하난은 베레기야의 아들 므술람의 사위였으므로 많은 유다인들이 토비야와 맹약을 맺고 있었던 것이다.
  4. 그들은 내 앞에서 공공연히 토비야를 칭찬하였고 내가 무슨 말을 하든지 그 말을 토비야에게 몰래 일러바치곤 하였다. 그리하여 나는 토비야에게서 협박 편지를 여러 통 받았던 것이다.
 
  취리(取利, 5:7)  돈을 빌려 주고 높은 이자를 받음
