에스라 3:1-4:24

 이스라엘 백성들은 예루살렘에 모여 단을 쌓고 야웨께 번제를 드린 후 성전 재건을 시작하였다. 성전 재건은 바사 왕 고레스 시대부터 다리오 즉위 때까지 방해를 받았는데, 아닥사스다 왕 때에는 방해 세력의 고소로 성전 건축이 완전히 중단되어 다리오 제2년까지 계속되었다.
  
  성전 건축(3:1-3:13)    
 
  1. When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns, the people assembled as one man in Jerusalem.
  2. Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests and Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, in accordance with what is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.
  3. Despite their fear of the peoples around them, they built the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the LORD, both the morning and evening sacrifices.
  4. Then in accordance with what is written, they celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles with the required number of burnt offerings prescribed for each day.
  5. After that, they presented the regular burnt offerings, the New Moon sacrifices and the sacrifices for all the appointed sacred feasts of the LORD, as well as those brought as freewill offerings to the LORD.
  1. 유다로 돌아와 각자 자기 성에 정착한 이스라엘 사람들은 7월에 일제히 예루살렘에 모였다.

  1. On the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, though the foundation of the LORD's temple had not yet been laid.
  2. Then they gave money to the masons and carpenters, and gave food and drink and oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre, so that they would bring cedar logs by sea from Lebanon to Joppa, as authorized by Cyrus king of Persia.
  3. In the second month of the second year after their arrival at the house of God in Jerusalem, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jozadak and the rest of their brothers (the priests and the Levites and all who had returned from the captivity to Jerusalem) began the work, appointing Levites twenty years of age and older to supervise the building of the house of the LORD.
  4. Jeshua and his sons and brothers and Kadmiel and his sons (descendants of Hodaviah ) and the sons of Henadad and their sons and brothers--all Levites--joined together in supervising those working on the house of God.
  5. When the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, the priests in their vestments and with trumpets, and the Levites (the sons of Asaph) with cymbals, took their places to praise the LORD, as prescribed by David king of Israel.
  1. 이와 갈이 그들은 아직 성전 기초 공사도 하지 않았지만 7월 1일부터 여호와께 제사를 드리기 시작하였다.
  2. 그 후에 그들은 석수와 목수를 고용하고 또 두로와 시돈 사람들에게 식량과 포도주와 감람기름을 주고 백향목을 실어 왔는데 그 모든 목재는 페르시아 키루스황제의 허가를 받아 레바논 산에서 지중해 연안을 따라 욥바까지 운송해 왔다.
  3. 그들이 예루살렘에 돌아온 그 다음 해 2월에 스알디엘의 아들 스룹바벨, 요사닥의 아들 예수아와 그의 동료 제사장들, 그리고 레위 사람들과 예루살렘으로 귀환한 거의 모든 사람들이 성전 건축 공사를 시작하였으며 20세 이상의 레위 사람들은 그 작업을 감독하였다.

  1. With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD : "He is good; his love to Israel endures forever." And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.
  2. But many of the older priests and Levites and family heads, who had seen the former temple, wept aloud when they saw the foundation of this temple being laid, while many others shouted for joy.
  3. No one could distinguish the sound of the shouts of joy from the sound of weeping, because the people made so much noise. And the sound was heard far away.
  1. 여호와께 감사와 찬양드리며 이렇게 노래하였다. '여호와는 선하시며 이스라엘에 대한 그의 사랑은 영원하다!' 그러자 모든 백성들은 성전 기초를 놓은 기쁨때문에 큰 소리로 여호와를 찬양하였다.
  2. 그러나 솔로몬의 옛 성전을 기억하고 있던 나이 많은 제사장들과 레위인들과 그 밖의 여러 지도자들은 새 성전의 기초가 놓인 것을 보고 대성 통곡하였고 다른 사람들은 기뻐서 외쳤다.
  3. 이와 같이 사람들의 요란한 소리가 멀리까지 들렸으므로 우는 소리인지 기뻐서 외치는 소리인지 아무도 분간할 수가 없었다.
 
  방해 공작(4:1-4:24)    
 
  1. When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel,
  2. they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the families and said, "Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us here."
  3. But Zerubbabel, Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel answered, "You have no part with us in building a temple to our God. We alone will build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us."
  4. Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building.
  5. They hired counselors to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia.
  1. 이때 유다와 베냐민의 원수들은 바빌로니아에서 돌아온 포로들이 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 성전을 짓고 있다는 말을 듣고
  2. 스룹바벨과 그 밖에 지도자들에게 와서 이렇게 말하였다. '우리도 당신들과 함께 성전을 짓도록 해 주시오. 당신들이 섬기는 하나님을 우리도 섬기고 있소. 우리는 앗시리아의 에살핫돈왕이 우리를 이 곳으로 이주시킨 때부터 그분에게 제사를 드려 왔소'
  3. 그러나 스룹바벨과 예수아와 다른 지도자들은 '그럴 수 없소. 우리 하나님을 위해 성전을 짓는 일에 당신들은 상관하지 마시오. 이스라엘 하나님의 성전은 페르시아의 키루스황제가 명령한 대로 우리가 단독으로 건축하겠소.' 하고 대답하였다.
  4. 그때부터 그 땅에 살고 있던 사람들이 유다 사람들을 괴롭히고 성전 공사를 방해하며
  5. 페르시아 정부 관리들을 뇌물로 매수하여 그들의 계획을 좌절시켰다. 이런 일은 키루스황제가 통치하던 시대부터 다리우스황제가 통치할 때까지 계속되었다.
  1. At the beginning of the reign of Xerxes, they lodged an accusation against the people of Judah and Jerusalem.
  2. And in the days of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel and the rest of his associates wrote a letter to Artaxerxes. The letter was written in Aramaic script and in the Aramaic language. ,
  3. Rehum the commanding officer and Shimshai the secretary wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king as follows:
  4. Rehum the commanding officer and Shimshai the secretary, together with the rest of their associates--the judges and officials over the men from Tripolis, Persia, Erech and Babylon, the Elamites of Susa,
  5. and the other people whom the great and honorable Ashurbanipal deported and settled in the city of Samaria and elsewhere in Trans-Euphrates.
  1. 그 후 크셀크세스가 즉위하자 그들은 황제에게 유다와 예루살렘 주민들을 고소하는 편지를 보냈다.
  2. 또 아르타크셀크세스 시대에 비슬람, 미드레닷, 다브엘, 그리고 그들의 동료들이 아람어로 편지를 써서 황제에게 보냈으며 그것은 읽을 때에 번역되었다.

  1. (This is a copy of the letter they sent him.) To King Artaxerxes, From your servants, the men of Trans-Euphrates:
  2. The king should know that the Jews who came up to us from you have gone to Jerusalem and are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city. They are restoring the walls and repairing the foundations.
  3. Furthermore, the king should know that if this city is built and its walls are restored, no more taxes, tribute or duty will be paid, and the royal revenues will suffer.
  4. Now since we are under obligation to the palace and it is not proper for us to see the king dishonored, we are sending this message to inform the king,
  5. so that a search may be made in the archives of your predecessors. In these records you will find that this city is a rebellious city, troublesome to kings and provinces, a place of rebellion from ancient times. That is why this city was destroyed.
  1. 그리고 그 고소장의 내용은 다음과 같다. '아르타크셀크세스황제 폐하께 유프라테스강 서쪽 지방에 사는 폐하의 종들이 문안을 드립니다.
  2. 황제 폐하께서 아셔야 할 일이 있습니다. 바빌론에서 이 곳으로 돌아온 유대인들이 악한 반역의 성 예루살렘을 재건하고 있는데 그들은 성벽을 다시 쌓고 그 토대를 수리하고 있습니다.

  1. We inform the king that if this city is built and its walls are restored, you will be left with nothing in Trans-Euphrates.
  2. The king sent this reply: To Rehum the commanding officer, Shimshai the secretary and the rest of their associates living in Samaria and elsewhere in Trans-Euphrates: Greetings.
  3. The letter you sent us has been read and translated in my presence.
  4. I issued an order and a search was made, and it was found that this city has a long history of revolt against kings and has been a place of rebellion and sedition.
  5. Jerusalem has had powerful kings ruling over the whole of Trans-Euphrates, and taxes, tribute and duty were paid to them.
  1. 우리가 황제 폐하께 미리 말씀드립니다만 만일 이 성이 재건되고 그 성벽이 완성되면 폐하께서는 유프라테스강 서쪽 지방을 잃어버리게 될 것입니다.'
  2. 그러자 황제는 사령관 르훔과 서기관 심새와 그리고 사마리아와 그 밖의 유프라테스강 서쪽 지방에 사는 그들의 동료들에게 이런 답장을 보냈다. '너희들이 평안하기를 바란다.
  3. 너희가 보낸 편지는 번역되어 잘 읽었다.
  4. 내가 명령을 내려 조사해 보았더니 이 성이 옛날부터 왕들에게 거역하여 반란을 일으키며 폭동을 일삼아 온 것이 사실이었다.
  5. 나는 또 한때 예루살렘에 강력한 왕들이 나타나 유프라테스강 서쪽의 전 지역을 장악하고 그들에게 조공과 그 밖에 여러 가지 세금을 거둬들인 사실도 알아내었다.
  1. Now issue an order to these men to stop work, so that this city will not be rebuilt until I so order.
  2. Be careful not to neglect this matter. Why let this threat grow, to the detriment of the royal interests?
  3. As soon as the copy of the letter of King Artaxerxes was read to Rehum and Shimshai the secretary and their associates, they went immediately to the Jews in Jerusalem and compelled them by force to stop.
  4. Thus the work on the house of God in Jerusalem came to a standstill until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
  1. 그러므로 너희는 내가 다시 명령할 때까지 이 사람들에게 작업을 중단시켜 그 성을 재건하지 못하게 하여라.
  2. 너희는 즉시 이 일을 처리하여 더 이상 나에게 피해가 없도록 하라.'
  3. 아르타크셀크세스황제의 편지가 도착하자 르훔과 서기관 심새와 그들의 동료들은 편지를 읽어 보고 즉시 예루살렘으로 가서 권력과 힘으로 그 성의 재건 공사를 중단시켰다.
  4. 이렇게 해서 예루살렘의 성전 공사는 페르시아의 다리우스황제 2년까지 계속 중단된 상태로 있었다.
