  1. (But the Danites had difficulty taking possession of their territory, so they went up and attacked Leshem, took it, put it to the sword and occupied it. They settled in Leshem and named it Dan after their forefather.)
  2. These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the tribe of Dan, clan by clan.
  3. When they had finished dividing the land into its allotted portions, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them,
  4. as the LORD had commanded. They gave him the town he asked for--Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim. And he built up the town and settled there.
  5. These are the territories that Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel assigned by lot at Shiloh in the presence of the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. And so they finished dividing the land.
  1. And the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.
  2. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.
  3. When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts, the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them:
  4. According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnathserah in mount Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt therein.
  5. These are the inheritances, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.

  1. Then the LORD said to Joshua:
  2. "Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses,
  3. so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood.
  4. "When he flees to one of these cities, he is to stand in the entrance of the city gate and state his case before the elders of that city. Then they are to admit him into their city and give him a place to live with them.
  5. If the avenger of blood pursues him, they must not surrender the one accused, because he killed his neighbor unintentionally and without malice aforethought.
  1. The LORD also spake unto Joshua, saying,
  2. Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint out for you cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses:
  3. That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.
  4. And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.
  5. And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime.
  1. He is to stay in that city until he has stood trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then he may go back to his own home in the town from which he fled."
  2. So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.
  3. On the east side of the Jordan of Jericho they designated Bezer in the desert on the plateau in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan in the tribe of Manasseh.
  4. Any of the Israelites or any alien living among them who killed someone accidentally could flee to these designated cities and not be killed by the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.
  1. And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
  2. And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjatharba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.
  3. And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.
  4. These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.

  1. Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribal families of Israel
  2. at Shiloh in Canaan and said to them, "The LORD commanded through Moses that you give us towns to live in, with pasturelands for our livestock."
  3. So, as the LORD had commanded, the Israelites gave the Levites the following towns and pasturelands out of their own inheritance:
  4. The first lot came out for the Kohathites, clan by clan. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest were allotted thirteen towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin.
  5. The rest of Kohath's descendants were allotted ten towns from the clans of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan and half of Manasseh.
  1. Then came near the heads of the fathers of the Levites unto Eleazar the priest, and unto Joshua the son of Nun, and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel;
  2. And they spake unto them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.
  3. And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the LORD, these cities and their suburbs.
  4. And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites: and the children of Aaron the priest, which were of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe of Judah, and out of the tribe of Simeon, and out of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities.
  5. And the rest of the children of Kohath had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh, ten cities.
  1. The descendants of Gershon were allotted thirteen towns from the clans of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
  2. The descendants of Merari, clan by clan, received twelve towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.
  3. So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these towns and their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
  4. From the tribes of Judah and Simeon they allotted the following towns by name
  5. (these towns were assigned to the descendants of Aaron who were from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them):
  1. And the children of Gershon had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities.
  2. The children of Merari by their families had out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.
  3. And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.
  4. And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities which are here mentioned by name.
  5. Which the children of Aaron, being of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi, had: for theirs was the first lot.
  1. They gave them Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), with its surrounding pastureland, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.)
  2. But the fields and villages around the city they had given to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
  3. So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron (a city of refuge for one accused of murder), Libnah,
  4. Jattir, Eshtemoa,
  5. Holon, Debir,
  1. And they gave them the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it.
  2. But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.
  3. Thus they gave to the children of Aaron the priest Hebron with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Libnah with her suburbs,
  4. And Jattir with her suburbs, and Eshtemoa with her suburbs,
  5. And Holon with her suburbs, and Debir with her suburbs,
  1. Ain, Juttah and Beth Shemesh, together with their pasturelands--nine towns from these two tribes.
  2. And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon, Geba,
  3. Anathoth and Almon, together with their pasturelands--four towns.
  4. All the towns for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, were thirteen, together with their pasturelands.
  5. The rest of the Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted towns from the tribe of Ephraim:
  1. And Ain with her suburbs, and Juttah with her suburbs, and Bethshemesh with her suburbs; nine cities out of those two tribes.
  2. And out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with her suburbs, Geba with her suburbs,
  3. Anathoth with her suburbs, and Almon with her suburbs; four cities.
  4. All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their suburbs.
  5. And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites which remained of the children of Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim.
  1. In the hill country of Ephraim they were given Shechem (a city of refuge for one accused of murder) and Gezer,
  2. Kibzaim and Beth Horon, together with their pasturelands--four towns.
  3. Also from the tribe of Dan they received Eltekeh, Gibbethon,
  4. Aijalon and Gath Rimmon, together with their pasturelands--four towns.
  5. From half the tribe of Manasseh they received Taanach and Gath Rimmon, together with their pasturelands--two towns.
  1. For they gave them Shechem with her suburbs in mount Ephraim, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Gezer with her suburbs,
  2. And Kibzaim with her suburbs, and Bethhoron with her suburbs; four cities.
  3. And out of the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with her suburbs, Gibbethon with her suburbs,
  4. Aijalon with her suburbs, Gathrimmon with her suburbs; four cities.
  5. And out of the half tribe of Manasseh, Tanach with her suburbs, and Gathrimmon with her suburbs; two cities.
  1. All these ten towns and their pasturelands were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.
  1. All the cities were ten with their suburbs for the families of the children of Kohath that remained.
