  1. Israel, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen, all of them fighting men.
  2. The Israelites went up to Bethel and inquired of God. They said, "Who of us shall go first to fight against the Benjamites?" The LORD replied, "Judah shall go first."
  3. The next morning the Israelites got up and pitched camp near Gibeah.
  4. The men of Israel went out to fight the Benjamites and took up battle positions against them at Gibeah.
  5. The Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down twenty-two thousand Israelites on the battlefield that day.
  1. And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.
  2. And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.
  3. And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.
  4. And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah.
  5. And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.
  1. But the men of Israel encouraged one another and again took up their positions where they had stationed themselves the first day.
  2. The Israelites went up and wept before the LORD until evening, and they inquired of the LORD. They said, "Shall we go up again to battle against the Benjamites, our brothers?" The LORD answered, "Go up against them."
  3. Then the Israelites drew near to Benjamin the second day.
  4. This time, when the Benjamites came out from Gibeah to oppose them, they cut down another eighteen thousand Israelites, all of them armed with swords.
  5. Then the Israelites, all the people, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the LORD. They fasted that day until evening and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the LORD.
  1. And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day.
  2. (And the children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)
  3. And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.
  4. And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.
  5. Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
  1. And the Israelites inquired of the LORD. (In those days the ark of the covenant of God was there,
  2. with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, ministering before it.) They asked, "Shall we go up again to battle with Benjamin our brother, or not?" The LORD responded, "Go, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands."
  3. Then Israel set an ambush around Gibeah.
  4. They went up against the Benjamites on the third day and took up positions against Gibeah as they had done before.
  5. The Benjamites came out to meet them and were drawn away from the city. They began to inflict casualties on the Israelites as before, so that about thirty men fell in the open field and on the roads--the one leading to Bethel and the other to Gibeah.
  1. And the children of Israel enquired of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,
  2. And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.
  3. And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah.
  4. And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.
  5. And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
  1. While the Benjamites were saying, "We are defeating them as before," the Israelites were saying, "Let's retreat and draw them away from the city to the roads."
  2. All the men of Israel moved from their places and took up positions at Baal Tamar, and the Israelite ambush charged out of its place on the west of Gibeah.
  3. Then ten thousand of Israel's finest men made a frontal attack on Gibeah. The fighting was so heavy that the Benjamites did not realize how near disaster was.
  4. The LORD defeated Benjamin before Israel, and on that day the Israelites struck down 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords.
  5. Then the Benjamites saw that they were beaten. Now the men of Israel had given way before Benjamin, because they relied on the ambush they had set near Gibeah.
  1. And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.
  2. And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baaltamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.
  3. And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.
  4. And the LORD smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.
  5. So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.
  1. The men who had been in ambush made a sudden dash into Gibeah, spread out and put the whole city to the sword.
  2. The men of Israel had arranged with the ambush that they should send up a great cloud of smoke from the city,
  3. and then the men of Israel would turn in the battle. The Benjamites had begun to inflict casualties on the men of Israel (about thirty), and they said, "We are defeating them as in the first battle."
  4. But when the column of smoke began to rise from the city, the Benjamites turned and saw the smoke of the whole city going up into the sky.
  5. Then the men of Israel turned on them, and the men of Benjamin were terrified, because they realized that disaster had come upon them.
  1. And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.
  2. Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.
  3. And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.
  4. But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.
  5. And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.
  1. So they fled before the Israelites in the direction of the desert, but they could not escape the battle. And the men of Israel who came out of the towns cut them down there.
  2. They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them and easily overran them in the vicinity of Gibeah on the east.
  3. Eighteen thousand Benjamites fell, all of them valiant fighters.
  4. As they turned and fled toward the desert to the rock of Rimmon, the Israelites cut down five thousand men along the roads. They kept pressing after the Benjamites as far as Gidom and struck down two thousand more.
  5. On that day twenty-five thousand Benjamite swordsmen fell, all of them valiant fighters.
  1. Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
  2. Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.
  3. And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.
  4. And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.
  5. So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.
  1. But six hundred men turned and fled into the desert to the rock of Rimmon, where they stayed four months.
  2. The men of Israel went back to Benjamin and put all the towns to the sword, including the animals and everything else they found. All the towns they came across they set on fire.
  1. But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.
  2. And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.

  º£³Ä¹ÎÀ» À§ÇÑ ´ëÃ¥(21:1-21:25)

  1. The men of Israel had taken an oath at Mizpah: "Not one of us will give his daughter in marriage to a Benjamite."
  2. The people went to Bethel, where they sat before God until evening, raising their voices and weeping bitterly.
  3. "O LORD, the God of Israel," they cried, "why has this happened to Israel? Why should one tribe be missing from Israel today?"
  4. Early the next day the people built an altar and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings.
  5. Then the Israelites asked, "Who from all the tribes of Israel has failed to assemble before the LORD ?" For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who failed to assemble before the LORD at Mizpah should certainly be put to death.
  1. Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.
  2. And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore;
  3. And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?
  4. And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
  5. And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
  1. Now the Israelites grieved for their brothers, the Benjamites. "Today one tribe is cut off from Israel," they said.
  2. "How can we provide wives for those who are left, since we have taken an oath by the LORD not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?"
  3. Then they asked, "Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to assemble before the LORD at Mizpah?" They discovered that no one from Jabesh Gilead had come to the camp for the assembly.
  4. For when they counted the people, they found that none of the people of Jabesh Gilead were there.
  5. So the assembly sent twelve thousand fighting men with instructions to go to Jabesh Gilead and put to the sword those living there, including the women and children.
  1. And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.
  2. How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?
  3. And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabeshgilead to the assembly.
  4. For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead there.
  5. And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
  1. "This is what you are to do," they said. "Kill every male and every woman who is not a virgin."
  2. They found among the people living in Jabesh Gilead four hundred young women who had never slept with a man, and they took them to the camp at Shiloh in Canaan.
  3. Then the whole assembly sent an offer of peace to the Benjamites at the rock of Rimmon.
  4. So the Benjamites returned at that time and were given the women of Jabesh Gilead who had been spared. But there were not enough for all of them.
  5. The people grieved for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a gap in the tribes of Israel.
  1. And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.
  2. And they found among the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
  3. And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them.
  4. And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabeshgilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.
  5. And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
  1. And the elders of the assembly said, "With the women of Benjamin destroyed, how shall we provide wives for the men who are left?
  2. The Benjamite survivors must have heirs," they said, "so that a tribe of Israel will not be wiped out.
  3. We can't give them our daughters as wives, since we Israelites have taken this oath: 'Cursed be anyone who gives a wife to a Benjamite.'
  4. But look, there is the annual festival of the LORD in Shiloh, to the north of Bethel, and east of the road that goes from Bethel to Shechem, and to the south of Lebonah."
  5. So they instructed the Benjamites, saying, "Go and hide in the vineyards
  1. Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?
  2. And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.
  3. Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.
  4. Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
  5. Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;
  1. and watch. When the girls of Shiloh come out to join in the dancing, then rush from the vineyards and each of you seize a wife from the girls of Shiloh and go to the land of Benjamin.
  2. When their fathers or brothers complain to us, we will say to them, 'Do us a kindness by helping them, because we did not get wives for them during the war, and you are innocent, since you did not give your daughters to them.' "
  3. So that is what the Benjamites did. While the girls were dancing, each man caught one and carried her off to be his wife. Then they returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the towns and settled in them.
  4. At that time the Israelites left that place and went home to their tribes and clans, each to his own inheritance.
  5. In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.
  1. And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
  2. And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.
  3. And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.
  4. And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.
  5. In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
