  1. Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.
  2. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
  3. For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.
  4. He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.
  5. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."
  1. Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
  2. Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
  3. For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
  4. Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
  5. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
  1. Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?
  2. But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened."
  3. But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
  4. keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
  5. It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
  1. And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?
  2. But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;
  3. But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
  4. Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
  5. For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
  1. For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit,
  2. through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison
  3. who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,
  4. and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
  5. who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand--with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
  1. For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
  2. By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
  3. Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
  4. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
  5. Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

  1. Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin.
  2. As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.
  3. For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do--living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.
  4. They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you.
  5. But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
  1. Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
  2. That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
  3. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
  4. Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
  5. Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
  1. For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.
  1. For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
