- Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,
- and he began to teach them saying:
- "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
- Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

- "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
- "Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

- Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
- Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
- Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
- Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
- Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

- "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

- "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
- Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
- "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
- "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
- Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

- "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;
- nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

- In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
- "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
- I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
- Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
- For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

- "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
- "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
- "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
- "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
- "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

- "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.'
- But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brotherwill be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.
- "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,
- leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.
- "Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.
|
- "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'
- "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
- "Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
- leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.
- "Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.

- I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
|
- "Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent.
