  1. Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words.
  2. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. "Teacher," they said, "we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are.
  3. Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"
  4. But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?
  5. Show me the coin used for paying the tax." They brought him a denarius,
  1. Then the Pharisees went and plotted together how they might trap Him in what He said.
  2. And they sent their disciples to Him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any.
  3. "Tell us then, what do You think? Is it lawful to give a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?"
  4. But Jesus perceived their malice, and said, "Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites?
  5. "Show Me the coin used for the poll-tax." And they brought Him a denarius.
  1. and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?"
  2. "Caesar's," they replied. Then he said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."
  3. When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.
  1. And He said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?"
  2. They said to Him, "Caesar's." Then He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God the things that are God's."
  3. And hearing this, they were amazed, and leaving Him, they went away.

  1. That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question.
  2. "Teacher," they said, "Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him.
  3. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother.
  4. The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh.
  5. Finally, the woman died.
  1. On that day some Sadducees (who say there is no resurrection) came to Jesus and questioned Him,
  2. asking, "Teacher, Moses said, 'IF A MAN DIES HAVING NO CHILDREN, HIS BROTHER AS NEXT OF KIN SHALL MARRY HIS WIFE, AND RAISE UP CHILDREN FOR HIS BROTHER.'
  3. "Now there were seven brothers with us; and the first married and died, and having no children left his wife to his brother;
  4. so also the second, and the third, down to the seventh.
  5. "Last of all, the woman died.
  1. Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?"
  2. Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.
  3. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.
  4. But about the resurrection of the dead--have you not read what God said to you,
  5. 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living."
  1. "In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had married her."
  2. But Jesus answered and said to them, "You are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God.
  3. "For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
  4. "But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God:
  5. 'I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living."
  1. When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.
