  1. Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.
  2. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:
  3. "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"
  4. Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'
  5. This is the first and greatest commandment.
  1. But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together.
  2. One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him,
  3. "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?"
  4. And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'
  5. "This is the great and foremost commandment.
  1. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
  2. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
  3. While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
  4. "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" "The son of David," they replied.
  5. He said to them, "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him 'Lord'? For he says,
  1. "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'
  2. "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."
  3. Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question:
  4. "What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?" They said to Him, "The son of David."
  5. He said to them, "Then how does David in the Spirit call Him 'Lord,' saying,
  1. " 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet." '
  2. If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?"
  3. No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
  1. 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET"'?
  2. "If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his son?"
  3. No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question.

  1. Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:
  2. "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.
  3. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.
  4. They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
  5. "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long;
  1. Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples,
  2. saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses;
  3. therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.
  4. "They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.
  5. "But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments.
  1. they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;
  2. they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them 'Rabbi.'
  3. "But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and you are all brothers.
  4. And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.
  5. Nor are you to be called 'teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ.
  1. "They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues,
  2. and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men.
  3. "But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers.
  4. "Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
  5. "Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ.
  1. The greatest among you will be your servant.
  2. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
  1. "But the greatest among you shall be your servant.
  2. "Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.
