  1. These are the terms of the covenant the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.
  2. Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land.
  3. With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those miraculous signs and great wonders.
  4. But to this day the LORD has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear.
  5. During the forty years that I led you through the desert, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet.
  1. These are the words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He had made with them at Horeb.
  2. And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "You have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and all his servants and all his land;
  3. the great trials which your eyes have seen, those great signs and wonders.
  4. "Yet to this day the LORD has not given you a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear.
  5. "I have led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandal has not worn out on your foot.
  1. You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink. I did this so that you might know that I am the LORD your God.
  2. When you reached this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to fight against us, but we defeated them.
  3. We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
  4. Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do.
  5. All of you are standing today in the presence of the LORD your God--your leaders and chief men, your elders and officials, and all the other men of Israel,
  1. "You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or strong drink, in order that you might know that I am the LORD your God.
  2. "When you reached this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan came out to meet us for battle, but we defeated them;
  3. and we took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites.
  4. "So keep the words of this covenant to do them, that you may prosper in all that you do.
  5. "You stand today, all of you, before the LORD your God: your chiefs, your tribes, your elders and your officers, even all the men of Israel,
  1. together with your children and your wives, and the aliens living in your camps who chop your wood and carry your water.
  2. You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the LORD your God, a covenant the LORD is making with you this day and sealing with an oath,
  3. to confirm you this day as his people, that he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
  4. I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you
  5. who are standing here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God but also with those who are not here today.
  1. your little ones, your wives, and the alien who is within your camps, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water,
  2. that you may enter into the covenant with the LORD your God, and into His oath which the LORD your God is making with you today,
  3. in order that He may establish you today as His people and that He may be your God, just as He spoke to you and as He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  4. "Now not with you alone am I making this covenant and this oath,
  5. but both with those who stand here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God and with those who are not with us here today
  1. You yourselves know how we lived in Egypt and how we passed through the countries on the way here.
  2. You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold.
  3. Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison.
  4. When such a person hears the words of this oath, he invokes a blessing on himself and therefore thinks, "I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way." This will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry.
  5. The LORD will never be willing to forgive him; his wrath and zeal will burn against that man. All the curses written in this book will fall upon him, and the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven.
  1. (for you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you passed;
  2. moreover, you have seen their abominations and their idols of wood, stone, silver, and gold, which they had with them);
  3. so that there will not be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of those nations; that there will not be among you a root bearing poisonous fruit and wormwood.
  4. "It shall be when he hears the words of this curse, that he will boast, saying, 'I have peace though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart in order to destroy the watered land with the dry.'
  5. "The LORD shall never be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the LORD and His jealousy will burn against that man, and every curse which is written in this book will rest on him, and the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven.
  1. The LORD will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law.
  2. Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the LORD has afflicted it.
  3. The whole land will be a burning waste of salt and sulfur--nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in fierce anger.
  4. All the nations will ask: "Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why this fierce, burning anger?"
  5. And the answer will be: "It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.
  1. "Then the LORD will single him out for adversity from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant which are written in this book of the law.
  2. "Now the generation to come, your sons who rise up after you and the foreigner who comes from a distant land, when they see the plagues of the land and the diseases with which the LORD has afflicted it, will say,
  3. 'All its land is brimstone and salt, a burning waste, unsown and unproductive, and no grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger and in His wrath.'
  4. "All the nations will say, 'Why has the LORD done thus to this land? Why this great outburst of anger?'
  5. "Then men will say, 'Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.
  1. They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them.
  2. Therefore the LORD's anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book.
  3. In furious anger and in great wrath the LORD uprooted them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now."
  4. The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.
  1. 'They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they have not known and whom He had not allotted to them.
  2. 'Therefore, the anger of the LORD burned against that land, to bring upon it every curse which is written in this book;
  3. and the LORD uprooted them from their land in anger and in fury and in great wrath, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.'
  4. "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law.

  1. When all these blessings and curses I have set before you come upon you and you take them to heart wherever the LORD your God disperses you among the nations,
  2. and when you and your children return to the LORD your God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul according to everything I command you today,
  3. then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you.
  4. Even if you have been banished to the most distant land under the heavens, from there the LORD your God will gather you and bring you back.
  5. He will bring you to the land that belonged to your fathers, and you will take possession of it. He will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers.
  1. "So it shall be when all of these things have come upon you, the blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you call them to mind in all nations where the LORD your God has banished you,
  2. and you return to the LORD your God and obey Him with all your heart and soul according to all that I command you today, you and your sons,
  3. then the LORD your God will restore you from captivity, and have compassion on you, and will gather you again from all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered you.
  4. "If your outcasts are at the ends of the earth, from there the LORD your God will gather you, and from there He will bring you back.
  5. "The LORD your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers.
  1. The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live.
  2. The LORD your God will put all these curses on your enemies who hate and persecute you.
  3. You will again obey the LORD and follow all his commands I am giving you today.
  4. Then the LORD your God will make you most prosperous in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your land. The LORD will again delight in you and make you prosperous, just as he delighted in your fathers,
  5. if you obey the LORD your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law and turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
  1. "Moreover the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live.
  2. "The LORD your God will inflict all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you, who persecuted you.
  3. "And you shall again obey the LORD, and observe all His commandments which I command you today.
  4. "Then the LORD your God will prosper you abundantly in all the work of your hand, in the offspring of your body and in the offspring of your cattle and in the produce of your ground, for the LORD will again rejoice over you for good, just as He rejoiced over your fathers;
  5. if you obey the LORD your God to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this book of the law, if you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and soul.
  1. Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.
  2. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, "Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?"
  3. Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, "Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?"
  4. No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.
  5. See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction.
  1. "For this commandment which I command you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it out of reach.
  2. "It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?'
  3. "Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?'
  4. "But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may observe it.
  5. "See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity;
  1. For I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.
  2. But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them,
  3. I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.
  4. This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live
  5. and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
  1. in that I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply, and that the LORD your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it.
  2. "But if your heart turns away and you will not obey, but are drawn away and worship other gods and serve them,
  3. I declare to you today that you shall surely perish. You will not prolong your days in the land where you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess it.
  4. "I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,
  5. by loving the LORD your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them."
