  1. Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.
  2. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy.
  3. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd.
  4. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
  5. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today."
  1. He entered Jericho and was passing through.
  2. And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich.
  3. Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.
  4. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way.
  5. When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, "Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house."
  1. So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
  2. All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a 'sinner.' "
  3. But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount."
  4. Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.
  5. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."
  1. And he hurried and came down and received Him gladly.
  2. When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, "He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner."
  3. Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much."
  4. And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham.
  5. "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."
  1. While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
  2. He said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return.
  3. So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas.'Put this money to work,' he said, 'until I come back.'
  4. "But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We don't want this man to be our king.'
  5. "He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.
  1. While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.
  2. So He said, "A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return.
  3. "And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten minas and said to them, 'Do business with this until I come back.'
  4. "But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.'
  5. "When he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be called to him so that he might know what business they had done.
  1. "The first one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more.'
  2. " 'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.'
  3. "The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.'
  4. "His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.'
  5. "Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth.
  1. "The first appeared, saying, 'Master, your mina has made ten minas more.'
  2. "And he said to him, 'Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.'
  3. "The second came, saying, 'Your mina, master, has made five minas.'
  4. "And he said to him also, 'And you are to be over five cities.'
  5. "Another came, saying, 'Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief;
  1. I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.'
  2. "His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?
  3. Why then didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?'
  4. "Then he said to those standing by, 'Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.'
  5. " 'Sir,' they said, 'he already has ten!'
  1. for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.'
  2. "He said to him, 'By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?
  3. 'Then why did you not put my money in the bank, and having come, I would have collected it with interest?'
  4. "Then he said to the bystanders, 'Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.'
  5. "And they said to him, 'Master, he has ten minas already.'
  1. "He replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.
  2. But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them--bring them here and kill them in front of me."
  1. "I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.
  2. "But these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in my presence."
