  1. Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question.
  2. "Teacher," they said, "Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have children for his brother.
  3. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless.
  4. The second
  5. and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children.
  1. Now there came to Him some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection),
  2. and they questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that IF A MAN'S BROTHER DIES, having a wife, AND HE IS CHILDLESS, HIS BROTHER SHOULD MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP CHILDREN TO HIS BROTHER.
  3. "Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless;
  4. and the second
  5. and the third married her; and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children.
  1. Finally, the woman died too.
  2. Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?"
  3. Jesus replied, "The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.
  4. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage,
  5. and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God's children, since they are children of the resurrection.
  1. "Finally the woman died also.
  2. "In the resurrection therefore, which one's wife will she be? For all seven had married her."
  3. Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,
  4. but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;
  5. for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
  1. But in the account of the bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord 'the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'
  2. He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive."
  3. Some of the teachers of the law responded, "Well said, teacher!"
  4. And no one dared to ask him any more questions.
  5. Then Jesus said to them, "How is it that they say the Christis the Son of David?
  1. "But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB.
  2. "Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living; for all live to Him."
  3. Some of the scribes answered and said, "Teacher, You have spoken well."
  4. For they did not have courage to question Him any longer about anything.
  5. Then He said to them, "How is it that they say the Christ is David's son?
  1. David himself declares in the Book of Psalms: " 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand
  2. until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." '
  3. David calls him 'Lord.' How then can he be his son?"
  4. While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples,
  5. "Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
  1. "For David himself says in the book of Psalms, 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
  2. UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET."'
  3. "Therefore David calls Him 'Lord,' and how is He his son?"
  4. And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples,
  5. "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,
  1. They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely."
  1. who devour widows' houses, and for appearance's sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."
