  1. Other Benjamites and some men from Judah also came to David in his stronghold.
  2. David went out to meet them and said to them, "If you have come to me in peace, to help me, I am ready to have you unite with me. But if you have come to betray me to my enemies when my hands are free from violence, may the God of our fathers see it and judge you."
  3. Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said: "We are yours, O David! We are with you, O son of Jesse! Success, success to you, and success to those who help you, for your God will help you." So David received them and made them leaders of his raiding bands.
  4. Some of the men of Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (He and his men did not help the Philistines because, after consultation, their rulers sent him away. They said, "It will cost us our heads if he deserts to his master Saul.")
  5. When David went to Ziklag, these were the men of Manasseh who defected to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu and Zillethai, leaders of units of a thousand in Manasseh.
  1. Then some of the sons of Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold to David.
  2. David went out to meet them, and said to them, "If you come peacefully to me to help me, my heart shall be united with you; but if to betray me to my adversaries, since there is no wrong in my hands, may the God of our fathers look on it and decide."
  3. Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, who was the chief of the thirty, and he said, "We are yours, O David, And with you, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, And peace to him who helps you; Indeed, your God helps you!" Then David received them and made them captains of the band.
  4. From Manasseh also some defected to David when he was about to go to battle with the Philistines against Saul. But they did not help them, for the lords of the Philistines after consultation sent him away, saying, "At the cost of our heads he may defect to his master Saul."
  5. As he went to Ziklag there defected to him from Manasseh: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu and Zillethai, captains of thousands who belonged to Manasseh.
  1. They helped David against raiding bands, for all of them were brave warriors, and they were commanders in his army.
  2. Day after day men came to help David, until he had a great army, like the army of God.
  3. These are the numbers of the men armed for battle who came to David at Hebron to turn Saul's kingdom over to him, as the LORD had said:
  4. men of Judah, carrying shield and spear-6,800 armed for battle;
  5. men of Simeon, warriors ready for battle-7,100;
  1. They helped David against the band of raiders, for they were all mighty men of valor, and were captains in the army.
  2. For day by day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army like the army of God.
  3. Now these are the numbers of the divisions equipped for war, who came to David at Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD.
  4. The sons of Judah who bore shield and spear were 6,800, equipped for war.
  5. Of the sons of Simeon, mighty men of valor for war, 7,100.
  1. men of Levi-4,600,
  2. including Jehoiada, leader of the family of Aaron, with 3,700 men,
  3. and Zadok, a brave young warrior, with 22 officers from his family;
  4. men of Benjamin, Saul's kinsmen-3,000, most of whom had remained loyal to Saul's house until then;
  5. men of Ephraim, brave warriors, famous in their own clans-20,800;
  1. Of the sons of Levi 4,600.
  2. Now Jehoiada was the leader of the house of Aaron, and with him were 3,700,
  3. also Zadok, a young man mighty of valor, and of his father's house twenty-two captains.
  4. Of the sons of Benjamin, Saul's kinsmen, 3,000; for until now the greatest part of them had kept their allegiance to the house of Saul.
  5. Of the sons of Ephraim 20,800, mighty men of valor, famous men in their fathers' households.
  1. men of half the tribe of Manasseh, designated by name to come and make David king-18,000;
  2. men of Issachar, who understood the times and knew what Israel should do--200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command;
  3. men of Zebulun, experienced soldiers prepared for battle with every type of weapon, to help David with undivided loyalty-50,000;
  4. men of Naphtali-1,000 officers, together with 37,000 men carrying shields and spears;
  5. men of Dan, ready for battle-28,600;
  1. Of the half-tribe of Manasseh 18,000, who were designated by name to come and make David king.
  2. Of the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their kinsmen were at their command.
  3. Of Zebulun, there were 50,000 who went out in the army, who could draw up in battle formation with all kinds of weapons of war and helped David with an undivided heart.
  4. Of Naphtali there were 1,000 captains, and with them 37,000 with shield and spear.
  5. Of the Danites who could draw up in battle formation, there were 28,600.
  1. men of Asher, experienced soldiers prepared for battle-40,000;
  2. and from east of the Jordan, men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, armed with every type of weapon-120,000.
  3. All these were fighting men who volunteered to serve in the ranks. They came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel. All the rest of the Israelites were also of one mind to make David king.
  4. The men spent three days there with David, eating and drinking, for their families had supplied provisions for them.
  5. Also, their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen. There were plentiful supplies of flour, fig cakes, raisin cakes, wine, oil, cattle and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.
  1. Of Asher there were 40,000 who went out in the army to draw up in battle formation.
  2. From the other side of the Jordan, of the Reubenites and the Gadites and of the half-tribe of Manasseh, there were 120,000 with all kinds of weapons of war for the battle.
  3. All these, being men of war who could draw up in battle formation, came to Hebron with a perfect heart to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest also of Israel were of one mind to make David king.
  4. They were there with David three days, eating and drinking, for their kinsmen had prepared for them.
  5. Moreover those who were near to them, even as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought food on donkeys, camels, mules and on oxen, great quantities of flour cakes, fig cakes and bunches of raisins, wine, oil, oxen and sheep. There was joy indeed in Israel.

  1. David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.
  2. He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our brothers throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come and join us.
  3. Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not inquire of it during the reign of Saul."
  4. The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.
  5. So David assembled all the Israelites, from the Shihor River in Egypt to Lebo Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim.
  1. Then David consulted with the captains of the thousands and the hundreds, even with every leader.
  2. David said to all the assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you, and if it is from the LORD our God, let us send everywhere to our kinsmen who remain in all the land of Israel, also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their cities with pasture lands, that they may meet with us;
  3. and let us bring back the ark of our God to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul."
  4. Then all the assembly said that they would do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
  5. So David assembled all Israel together, from the Shihor of Egypt even to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.
  1. David and all the Israelites with him went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who is enthroned between the cherubim--the ark that is called by the Name.
  2. They moved the ark of God from Abinadab's house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it.
  3. David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals and trumpets.
  4. When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled.
  5. The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.
  1. David and all Israel went up to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim, which belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, the LORD who is enthroned above the cherubim, where His name is called.
  2. They carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.
  3. David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, even with songs and with lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals and with trumpets.
  4. When they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark, because the oxen nearly upset it.
  5. The anger of the LORD burned against Uzza, so He struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark; and he died there before God.
  1. Then David was angry because the LORD's wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.
  2. David was afraid of God that day and asked, "How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?"
  3. He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.
  4. The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the LORD blessed his household and everything he had.
  1. Then David became angry because of the LORD'S outburst against Uzza; and he called that place Perez-uzza to this day.
  2. David was afraid of God that day, saying, "How can I bring the ark of God home to me?"
  3. So David did not take the ark with him to the city of David, but took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
  4. Thus the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months; and the LORD blessed the family of Obed-edom with all that he had.

  1. Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons and carpenters to build a palace for him.
  2. And David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and that his kingdom had been highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.
  3. In Jerusalem David took more wives and became the father of more sons and daughters.
  4. These are the names of the children born to him there: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
  5. Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,
  1. Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees, masons and carpenters, to build a house for him.
  2. And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted, for the sake of His people Israel.
  3. Then David took more wives at Jerusalem, and David became the father of more sons and daughters.
  4. These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
  5. Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,
  1. Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,
  2. Elishama, Beeliada and Eliphelet.
  3. When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went out to meet them.
  4. Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley of Rephaim;
  5. so David inquired of God: "Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?" The LORD answered him, "Go, I will hand them over to you."
  1. Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,
  2. Elishama, Beeliada and Eliphelet.
  3. When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up in search of David; and David heard of it and went out against them.
  4. Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the valley of Rephaim.
  5. David inquired of God, saying, "Shall I go up against the Philistines? And will You give them into my hand?" Then the LORD said to him, "Go up, for I will give them into your hand."
  1. So David and his men went up to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, "As waters break out, God has broken out against my enemies by my hand." So that place was called Baal Perazim.
  2. The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and David gave orders to burn them in the fire.
  3. Once more the Philistines raided the valley;
  4. so David inquired of God again, and God answered him, "Do not go straight up, but circle around them and attack them in front of the balsam trees.
  5. As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army."
  1. So they came up to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there; and David said, "God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like the breakthrough of waters." Therefore they named that place Baal-perazim.
  2. They abandoned their gods there; so David gave the order and they were burned with fire.
  3. The Philistines made yet another raid in the valley.
  4. David inquired again of God, and God said to him, "You shall not go up after them; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the balsam trees.
  5. "It shall be when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then you shall go out to battle, for God will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines."
  1. So David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army, all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.
  2. So David's fame spread throughout every land, and the LORD made all the nations fear him.
  1. David did just as God had commanded him, and they struck down the army of the Philistines from Gibeon even as far as Gezer.
  2. Then the fame of David went out into all the lands; and the LORD brought the fear of him on all the nations.
