  À¯´ëÀÎÀÇ ÁË(2:17-3:8)

  1. Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and brag about your relationship to God;
  2. if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law;
  3. if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark,
  4. an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth--
  5. you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?
  1. But if you bear the name "Jew" and rely upon the Law and boast in God,
  2. and know His will and approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law,
  3. and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,
  4. a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, having in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth,
  5. you, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that one shall not steal, do you steal?
  1. You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
  2. You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?
  3. As it is written: "God's name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you."
  4. Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised.
  5. If those who are not circumcised keep the law's requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised?
  1. You who say that one should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
  2. You who boast in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God?
  3. For "THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMED AMONG THE GENTILES BECAUSE OF YOU," just as it is written.
  4. For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
  5. So if the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?
  1. The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.
  2. A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical.
  3. No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God.
  1. And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law?
  2. For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh.
  3. But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.

  1. What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision?
  2. Much in every way! First of all, they have been entrusted with the very words of God.
  3. What if some did not have faith? Will their lack of faith nullify God's faithfulness?
  4. Not at all! Let God be true, and every man a liar. As it is written: "So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge."
  5. But if our unrighteousness brings out God's righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.)
  1. Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?
  2. Great in every respect. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God.
  3. What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it?
  4. May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written, "THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS, AND PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED."
  5. But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking in human terms.)
  1. Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world?
  2. Someone might argue, "If my falsehood enhances God's truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?"
  3. Why not say--as we are being slanderously reported as saying and as some claim that we say--"Let us do evil that good may result"? Their condemnation is deserved.
  1. May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world?
  2. But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner?
  3. And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), "Let us do evil that good may come"? Their condemnation is just.
