  1. for a prostitute is a deep pit and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
  2. Like a bandit she lies in wait, and multiplies the unfaithful among men.
  3. Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
  4. Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
  5. Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly!
  1. For a harlot is a deep pit And an adulterous woman is a narrow well.
  2. Surely she lurks as a robber, And increases the faithless among men.
  3. Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?
  4. Those who linger long over wine, Those who go to taste mixed wine.
  5. Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it goes down smoothly;
  1. In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper.
  2. Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind imagine confusing things.
  3. You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging.
  4. "They hit me," you will say, "but I'm not hurt! They beat me, but I don't feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?"
  1. At the last it bites like a serpent And stings like a viper.
  2. Your eyes will see strange things And your mind will utter perverse things.
  3. And you will be like one who lies down in the middle of the sea, Or like one who lies down on the top of a mast.
  4. "They struck me, but I did not become ill; They beat me, but I did not know it When shall I awake? I will seek another drink."
