  1. Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy and say to your husbands, "Bring us some drinks!"
  2. The Sovereign LORD has sworn by his holiness: "The time will surely come when you will be taken away with hooks, the last of you with fishhooks.
  3. You will each go straight out through breaks in the wall, and you will be cast out toward Harmon, " declares the LORD.
  4. "Go to Bethel and sin; go to Gilgal and sin yet more. Bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes every three years.
  5. Burn leavened bread as a thank offering and brag about your freewill offerings-- boast about them, you Israelites, for this is what you love to do," declares the Sovereign LORD.
  1. Hear this word, you cows of Bashan who are on the mountain of Samaria, Who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, Who say to your husbands, "Bring now, that we may drink!"
  2. The Lord GOD has sworn by His holiness, "Behold, the days are coming upon you When they will take you away with meat hooks, And the last of you with fish hooks.
  3. "You will go out through breaches in the walls, Each one straight before her, And you will be cast to Harmon," declares the LORD.
  4. "Enter Bethel and transgress; In Gilgal multiply transgression! Bring your sacrifices every morning, Your tithes every three days.
  5. "Offer a thank offering also from that which is leavened, And proclaim freewill offerings, make them known For so you love to do, you sons of Israel," Declares the Lord GOD.
  1. "I gave you empty stomachs in every city and lack of bread in every town, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.
  2. "I also withheld rain from you when the harvest was still three months away. I sent rain on one town, but withheld it from another. One field had rain; another had none and dried up.
  3. People staggered from town to town for water but did not get enough to drink, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.
  4. "Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards, I struck them with blight and mildew. Locusts devoured your fig and olive trees, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.
  5. "I sent plagues among you as I did to Egypt. I killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses. I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camps, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.
  1. "But I gave you also cleanness of teeth in all your cities And lack of bread in all your places, Yet you have not returned to Me," declares the LORD.
  2. "Furthermore, I withheld the rain from you While there were still three months until harvest Then I would send rain on one city And on another city I would not send rain; One part would be rained on, While the part not rained on would dry up.
  3. "So two or three cities would stagger to another city to drink water, But would not be satisfied; Yet you have not returned to Me," declares the LORD.
  4. "I smote you with scorching wind and mildew; And the caterpillar was devouring Your many gardens and vineyards, fig trees and olive trees; Yet you have not returned to Me," declares the LORD.
  5. "I sent a plague among you after the manner of Egypt; I slew your young men by the sword along with your captured horses, And I made the stench of your camp rise up in your nostrils; Yet you have not returned to Me," declares the LORD.
  1. "I overthrew some of you as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a burning stick snatched from the fire, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.
  2. "Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel, and because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel."
  3. He who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals his thoughts to man, he who turns dawn to darkness, and treads the high places of the earth-- the LORD God Almighty is his name.
  1. "I overthrew you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, And you were like a firebrand snatched from a blaze; Yet you have not returned to Me," declares the LORD.
  2. "Therefore thus I will do to you, O Israel; Because I will do this to you, Prepare to meet your God, O Israel."
  3. For behold, He who forms mountains and creates the wind And declares to man what are His thoughts, He who makes dawn into darkness And treads on the high places of the earth, The LORD God of hosts is His name.

  1. Hear this word, O house of Israel, this lament I take up concerning you:
  2. "Fallen is Virgin Israel, never to rise again, deserted in her own land, with no one to lift her up."
  3. This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "The city that marches out a thousand strong for Israel will have only a hundred left; the town that marches out a hundred strong will have only ten left."
  4. This is what the LORD says to the house of Israel: "Seek me and live;
  5. do not seek Bethel, do not go to Gilgal, do not journey to Beersheba. For Gilgal will surely go into exile, and Bethel will be reduced to nothing. "
  1. Hear this word which I take up for you as a dirge, O house of Israel:
  2. She has fallen, she will not rise again-- The virgin Israel She lies neglected on her land; There is none to raise her up.
  3. For thus says the Lord GOD, "The city which goes forth a thousand strong Will have a hundred left, And the one which goes forth a hundred strong Will have ten left to the house of Israel."
  4. For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel, "Seek Me that you may live.
  5. "But do not resort to Bethel And do not come to Gilgal, Nor cross over to Beersheba; For Gilgal will certainly go into captivity And Bethel will come to trouble.
  1. Seek the LORD and live, or he will sweep through the house of Joseph like a fire; it will devour, and Bethel will have no one to quench it.
  2. You who turn justice into bitterness and cast righteousness to the ground
  3. (he who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns blackness into dawn and darkens day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land-- the LORD is his name-
  4. he flashes destruction on the stronghold and brings the fortified city to ruin),
  5. you hate the one who reproves in court and despise him who tells the truth.
  1. "Seek the LORD that you may live, Or He will break forth like a fire, O house of Joseph, And it will consume with none to quench it for Bethel,
  2. For those who turn justice into wormwood And cast righteousness down to the earth."
  3. He who made the Pleiades and Orion And changes deep darkness into morning, Who also darkens day into night, Who calls for the waters of the sea And pours them out on the surface of the earth, The LORD is His name.
  4. It is He who flashes forth with destruction upon the strong, So that destruction comes upon the fortress.
  5. They hate him who reproves in the gate, And they abhor him who speaks with integrity.
  1. You trample on the poor and force him to give you grain. Therefore, though you have built stone mansions, you will not live in them; though you have planted lush vineyards, you will not drink their wine.
  2. For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins. You oppress the righteous and take bribes and you deprive the poor of justice in the courts.
  3. Therefore the prudent man keeps quiet in such times, for the times are evil.
  4. Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is.
  5. Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.
  1. Therefore because you impose heavy rent on the poor And exact a tribute of grain from them, Though you have built houses of well-hewn stone, Yet you will not live in them; You have planted pleasant vineyards, yet you will not drink their wine.
  2. For I know your transgressions are many and your sins are great, You who distress the righteous and accept bribes And turn aside the poor in the gate.
  3. Therefore at such a time the prudent person keeps silent, for it is an evil time.
  4. Seek good and not evil, that you may live; And thus may the LORD God of hosts be with you, Just as you have said!
  5. Hate evil, love good, And establish justice in the gate! Perhaps the LORD God of hosts May be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
  1. Therefore this is what the Lord, the LORD God Almighty, says: "There will be wailing in all the streets and cries of anguish in every public square. The farmers will be summoned to weep and the mourners to wail.
  2. There will be wailing in all the vineyards, for I will pass through your midst," says the LORD.
  3. Woe to you who long for the day of the LORD! Why do you long for the day of the LORD ? That day will be darkness, not light.
  4. It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him.
  5. Will not the day of the LORD be darkness, not light-- pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?
  1. Therefore thus says the LORD God of hosts, the Lord, "There is wailing in all the plazas, And in all the streets they say, 'Alas! Alas!' They also call the farmer to mourning And professional mourners to lamentation.
  2. "And in all the vineyards there is wailing, Because I will pass through the midst of you," says the LORD.
  3. Alas, you who are longing for the day of the LORD, For what purpose will the day of the LORD be to you? It will be darkness and not light;
  4. As when a man flees from a lion And a bear meets him, Or goes home, leans his hand against the wall And a snake bites him.
  5. Will not the day of the LORD be darkness instead of light, Even gloom with no brightness in it?
  1. "I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies.
  2. Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them.
  3. Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps.
  4. But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!
  5. "Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the desert, O house of Israel?
  1. "I hate, I reject your festivals, Nor do I delight in your solemn assemblies.
  2. "Even though you offer up to Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them; And I will not even look at the peace offerings of your fatlings.
  3. "Take away from Me the noise of your songs; I will not even listen to the sound of your harps.
  4. "But let justice roll down like waters And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
  5. "Did you present Me with sacrifices and grain offerings in the wilderness for forty years, O house of Israel?
  1. You have lifted up the shrine of your king, the pedestal of your idols, the star of your god -- which you made for yourselves.
  2. Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus," says the LORD, whose name is God Almighty.
  1. "You also carried along Sikkuth your king and Kiyyun, your images, the star of your gods which you made for yourselves.
  2. "Therefore, I will make you go into exile beyond Damascus," says the LORD, whose name is the God of hosts.

  1. Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come!
  2. Go to Calneh and look at it; go from there to great Hamath, and then go down to Gath in Philistia. Are they better off than your two kingdoms? Is their land larger than yours?
  3. You put off the evil day and bring near a reign of terror.
  4. You lie on beds inlaid with ivory and lounge on your couches. You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves.
  5. You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments.
  1. Woe to those who are at ease in Zion And to those who feel secure in the mountain of Samaria, The distinguished men of the foremost of nations, To whom the house of Israel comes.
  2. Go over to Calneh and look, And go from there to Hamath the great, Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms, Or is their territory greater than yours?
  3. Do you put off the day of calamity, And would you bring near the seat of violence?
  4. Those who recline on beds of ivory And sprawl on their couches, And eat lambs from the flock And calves from the midst of the stall,
  5. Who improvise to the sound of the harp, And like David have composed songs for themselves,
  1. You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
  2. Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile; your feasting and lounging will end.
  3. The Sovereign LORD has sworn by himself--the LORD God Almighty declares: "I abhor the pride of Jacob and detest his fortresses; I will deliver up the city and everything in it."
  4. If ten men are left in one house, they too will die.
  5. And if a relative who is to burn the bodies comes to carry them out of the house and asks anyone still hiding there, "Is anyone with you?" and he says, "No," then he will say, "Hush! We must not mention the name of the LORD."
  1. Who drink wine from sacrificial bowls While they anoint themselves with the finest of oils, Yet they have not grieved over the ruin of Joseph.
  2. Therefore, they will now go into exile at the head of the exiles, And the sprawlers' banqueting will pass away.
  3. The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself, the LORD God of hosts has declared: "I loathe the arrogance of Jacob, And detest his citadels; Therefore I will deliver up the city and all it contains."
  4. And it will be, if ten men are left in one house, they will die.
  5. Then one's uncle, or his undertaker, will lift him up to carry out his bones from the house, and he will say to the one who is in the innermost part of the house, "Is anyone else with you?" And that one will say, "No one " Then he will answer, "Keep quiet For the name of the LORD is not to be mentioned."
  1. For the LORD has given the command, and he will smash the great house into pieces and the small house into bits.
  2. Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow there with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness-
  3. you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar and say, "Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?"
  4. For the LORD God Almighty declares, "I will stir up a nation against you, O house of Israel, that will oppress you all the way from Lebo Hamath to the valley of the Arabah."
  1. For behold, the LORD is going to command that the great house be smashed to pieces and the small house to fragments.
  2. Do horses run on rocks? Or does one plow them with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood,
  3. You who rejoice in Lodebar, And say, "Have we not by our own strength taken Karnaim for ourselves?"
  4. "For behold, I am going to raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel," declares the LORD God of hosts, "And they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath To the brook of the Arabah."
