	창세기 37:1-38:30 아버지의 사랑을 독차지하고 두 번에 걸친 자신의 꿈 이야기를 자랑하는 요셉을 시기하고 질투한 형들이 음모로 꾸며 요셉을 종으로 팔았다. 한편 세 아들을 둔 유다는 야웨 앞에서 행위가 악한 장자와 둘째 아들을 잃었고, 맏며느리 다말은 장성한 셋째 아들을 통해서도 후사를 잇지 못하게 되자 꾀를 내어 시부인 유다와 동침하여 베레스와 세라를 낳았다.

	요셉의 꿈(37:1-37:36)

Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.

This is the account of Jacob. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented robe for him.

When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.

ヤコブは，父が一時滯在していた地，カナンの地に住んでいた．

これはヤコブの歷史である．ヨセフは十七歲のとき，彼の兄たちと羊の群れを飼っていた．彼はまだ手傳いで，父の妻ビルハの子らやジルパの子らといっしょにいた．ヨセフは彼らの惡いうわさを父に告げた．

イスラエルは，彼の息子たちのだれよりもヨセフを愛していた．それはヨセフが彼の年寄り子であったからである．それで彼はヨセフに，そでつきの長服を作ってやっていた．

あるとき，ヨセフは夢を見て，それを兄たちに告げた．すると彼らは，ますます彼を憎むようになった．

He said to them, "Listen to this dream I had:

We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it."

His brothers said to him, "Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?" And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.

Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. "Listen," he said, "I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me."

When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, "What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?"

ヨセフは彼らに言った．「どうか私の見たこの夢を聞いてください．

見ると，私たちは畑で束をたばねていました．すると突然，私の束が立ち上がり，しかもまっすぐに立っているのです．見ると，あなたがたの束が回りに來て，私の束におじぎをしました．」

兄たちは彼に言った．「おまえは私たちを治める王になろうとするのか．私たちを支配しようとでも言うのか．」こうして彼らは，夢のことや，ことばのことで，彼をますます憎むようになった．

ヨセフはまた，ほかの夢を見て，それを兄たちに話した．彼は，「また，私は夢を見ましたよ．見ると，太陽と月と十一の星が私を伏し拜んでいるのです．」と言った．

ヨセフが父や兄たちに話したとき，父は彼をしかって言った．「おまえの見た夢は，いったい何なのだ．私や，おまえの母上，兄さんたちが，おまえのところに進み出て，地に伏しておまえを拜むとでも言うのか．」

His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Now his brothers had gone to graze their father's flocks near Shechem,

and Israel said to Joseph, "As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them." "Very well," he replied.

So he said to him, "Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me." Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron. When Joseph arrived at Shechem,

a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, "What are you looking for?"

兄たちは彼をねたんだが，父はこのことを心に留めていた．

その後，兄たちはシェケムで父の羊の群れを飼うために出かけて行った．

それで，イスラエルはヨセフに言った．「お前の兄さんたちはシェケムで群れを飼っている．さあ，あの人たちのところに使いに行ってもらいたい．」すると答えた．「はい．まいります．」

He replied, "I'm looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?"

"They have moved on from here," the man answered. "I heard them say, 'Let's go to Dothan.' " So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan.

But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.

"Here comes that dreamer!" they said to each other.

"Come now, let's kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams."

ヨセフは言った．「私は兄たちを搜しているところです．どこで群れを飼っているか敎えてください．」

するとその人は言った．「ここから，もう立って行ったはずです．あの人たちが，『ドタンのほうに行こうではないか．』と言っているのを私が聞いたからです．」そこでヨセフは兄たちのあとを追って行き，ドタンで彼らを見つけた．

彼らは，ヨセフが彼らの近くに來ないうちに，はるかかなたに，彼を見て，彼を殺そうとたくらんだ．

彼らは互いに言った．「見ろ．あの夢見る者がやって來る．

さあ，今こそ彼を殺し，どこかの穴に投げ ¿んで，惡い ¿が食い殺したと言おう．そして，あれの夢がどうなるかを見ようではないか．」

When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. "Let's not take his life," he said.

"Don't shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the desert, but don't lay a hand on him." Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe--the richly ornamented robe he was wearing-

and they took him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it.

As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.

しかし，ルベンはこれを聞き，彼らの手から彼を救い出そうとして，「あの子のいのちを打ってはならない．」と言った．

Judah said to his brothers, "What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?

Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood." His brothers agreed.

So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.

He went back to his brothers and said, "The boy isn't there! Where can I turn now?"

すると，ユダが兄弟たちに言った．「弟を殺し，その血を隱したとて，何の益になろう．

さあ，ヨセフをイシュマエル人に賣ろう．われわれが彼に手をかけてはならない．彼はわれわれの肉親の弟だから．」兄弟たちは彼の言うことを聞き入れた．

そのとき，ミデヤン人の商人が通りかかった．それで彼らはヨセフを穴から引き上げ，ヨセフを銀二十枚でイシュマエル人に賣った．イシュマエル人はヨセフをエジプトへ連れて行った．

さて，ルベンが穴のところに歸って來ると，なんと，ヨセフは穴の中にいなかった．彼は自分の着物を引き裂き，

兄弟たちのところに戾って，言った．「あの子がいない．ああ，私はどこへ行ったらよいのか．」

Then they got Joseph's robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.

They took the ornamented robe back to their father and said, "We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son's robe."

He recognized it and said, "It is my son's robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces."

Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days.

All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. "No," he said, "in mourning will I go down to the grave to my son." So his father wept for him.

彼らはヨセフの長服を取り，雄やぎをほふって，その血に，その長服を浸した．

Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard.

あのミデヤン人はエジプトで，パロの廷臣，その侍從長ポティファルにヨセフを賣った．

At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah.

There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and lay with her;

she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er.

She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan.

She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.

そのころのことであった．ユダは兄弟たちから離れて下って行き，その名をヒラというアドラム人の近くで天幕を張った．

そこでユダは，あるカナン人で，その名をシュアという人の娘を見そめ，彼女をめとって彼女のところにはいった．

彼女はみごもり，男の子を産んだ．彼はその子をエルと名づけた．

彼女はまたみごもって，男の子を産み，その子をオナンと名づけた．

彼女はさらにまた男の子を産み，その子をシェラと名づけた．彼女がシェラを産んだとき，彼はケジブにいた．

Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the LORD's sight; so the LORD put him to death.

Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother."

But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother.

What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also.

ユダは，その長子エルにタマルという妻を迎えた．

しかしユダの長子エルは主を怒らせていたので，主は彼を殺した．

それでユダはオナンに言った．「あなたは兄嫁のところにはいり，義弟としての務めを果たしなさい．そしてあなたの兄のために子孫を起こすようにしなさい．」

しかしオナンは，その生まれる子が自分のものとならないのを知っていたので，兄に子孫を與えないために，兄嫁のところにはいると，地に流していた．

彼のしたことは主を怒らせたので，主は彼をも殺した．

Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Live as a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up." For he thought, "He may die too, just like his brothers." So Tamar went to live in her father's house.

After a long time Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.

When Tamar was told, "Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,"

she took off her widow's clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.

When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

そこでユダは，嫁のタマルに，「わが子シェラが成人するまで，あなたの父の家でやもめのままでいなさい．」と言った．それはシェラもまた，兄たちのように死ぬといけないと思ったからである．タマルは父の家に行き，そこに住むようになった．

かなり日がたって，シュアの娘であったユダの妻が死んだ．その喪が明けたとき，ユダは，羊の群れの毛を切るために，その友人でアドラム人のヒラといっしょに，ティムナへ上って行った．

そのとき，タマルに，「ご覽．あなたのしゅうとが羊の毛を切るためにティムナに上って來ていますよ．」と告げる者があった．

それでタマルは，やもめの服を脫ぎ，ベ ― ルをかぶり，着替えをして，ティムナへの道にあるエナイムの入口にすわっていた．それはシェラが成人したのに，自分がその妻にされないのを知っていたからである．

Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, "Come now, let me sleep with you." "And what will you give me to sleep with you?" she asked.

"I'll send you a young goat from my flock," he said. "Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?" she asked.

He said, "What pledge should I give you?" "Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand," she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow's clothes again.

Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her.

道ばたの彼女のところに行き，「さあ，あなたのところにはいろう．」と言った．彼はその女が自分の嫁だとは知らなかったからである．彼女は，「私のところにおはいりになれば，何を私に下さいますか．」と言った．

He asked the men who lived there, "Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?" "There hasn't been any shrine prostitute here," they said.

So he went back to Judah and said, "I didn't find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, 'There hasn't been any shrine prostitute here.' "

Then Judah said, "Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn't find her."

About three months later Judah was told, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant." Judah said, "Bring her out and have her burned to death!"

As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. "I am pregnant by the man who owns these," she said. And she added, "See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are."

その友人は，そこの人¿に尋ねて，「エナイムの道ばたにいた遊女はどこにいますか．」と言うと，彼らは，「ここには遊女はいたことがない．」と答えた．

それで彼はユダのところに歸って來て言った．「あの女は見つかりませんでした．あそこの人たちも，ここには遊女はいたことがない，と言いました．」

ユダは言った．「われわれが笑いぐさにならないために，あの女にそのまま取らせておこう．私はこのとおり，この子やぎを送ったのに，あなたがあの女を見つけなかったのだから．」

約三か月して，ユダに，「あなたの嫁のタマルが賣春をし，そのうえ，お聞きください，その賣春によってみごもっているのです．」と告げる者があった．そこでユダは言った．「あの女を引き出して，燒き殺せ．」

彼女が引き出されたとき，彼女はしゅうとのところに使いをやり，「これらの品¿の持ち主によって，私はみごもったのです．」と言わせた．そしてまた彼女は言った．「これらの印形とひもと杖とが，だれのものかをお調べください．」

Judah recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn't give her to my son Shelah." And he did not sleep with her again.

When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.

As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, "This one came out first."

But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, "So this is how you have broken out!" And he was named Perez.

Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out and he was given the name Zerah.

ユダはこれを見定めて言った．「あの女は私よりも正しい．私が彼女を，わが子シェラに與えなかったことによるものだ．」こうして彼は再び彼女を知ろうとはしなかった．

彼女の出産の時になると，なんと，ふたごがその胎內にいた．

出産のとき，一つの手が出て來たので，助産婦はそれをつかみ，その手に眞赤な絲を結びつけて言った．「この子が最初に出て來たのです．」

しかし，その子が手を引っ ¿めたとき，もうひとりの兄弟のほうが出て來た．それで彼女は，「あなたは何であなたのために割りこむのです．」と言った．それでその名はペレツと呼ばれた．

そのあとで，眞赤な絲をつけたもうひとりの兄弟が出て來た．それでその名はゼラフと呼ばれた．
