- In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar--when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene--
- during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert.
- He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
- As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.
- Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth.

- 皇帝 テベリオ の 治世の 第十五年， ポンテオ · ピラト が ユダヤ の 總督， ヘロデ が ガリラヤ の 國主， その 兄弟 ピリポ が イツリヤ と テラコニテ 地方の 國主， ルサニヤ が アビレネ の 國主であり，
- アンナス と カヤパ が 大祭司であったころ， 神のことばが， 荒野で ザカリヤ の 子 ヨハネ に 下った．
- そこで ヨハネ は， ヨルダン 川のほとりのすべての 地方に 行って， 罪が 赦されるための 悔い 改めに 基づく バプテスマ を 說いた．
- そのことは 預言者 イザヤ のことばの 書に 書いてあるとおりである． 「荒野で 叫ぶ 者の 聲がする． 『 主の 道を 用意し， 主の 通られる 道をまっすぐにせよ．
- すべての 谷はうずめられ， すべての 山と 丘とは 低くされ， 曲がった 所はまっすぐになり， でこぼこ 道は 平らになる．

- And all mankind will see God's salvation.' "
- John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
- Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
- The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."
- "What should we do then?" the crowd asked.

- こうして， あらゆる 人が， 神の 救いを 見るようになる． 』」
- それで， ヨハネ は， 彼から バプテスマ を 受けようとして 出て 來た 群衆に 言った． 「まむしのすえたち． だれが 必ず 來る 御怒りをのがれるように 敎えたのか．
- それならそれで， 悔い 改めにふさわしい 實を 結びなさい． 『われわれの 先祖は アブラハム だ． 』などと 心の 中で 言い 始めてはいけません． よく 言っておくが， 神は， こんな 石ころからでも， アブラハム の 子孫を 起こすことがおできになるのです．
- 斧もすでに 木の 根元に 置かれています． だから， 良い 實を 結ばない 木は， みな 切り 倒されて， 火に 投げ ¿まれます． 」
- 群衆は ヨハネ に 尋ねた． 「それでは， 私たちはどうすればよいのでしょう． 」

- John answered, "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same."
- Tax collectors also came to be baptized. "Teacher," they asked, "what should we do?"
- "Don't collect any more than you are required to," he told them.
- Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?" He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely--be content with your pay."
- The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ.

- 彼は 答えて 言った． 「下着を 二枚持っている 者は， 一つも 持たない 者に 分けなさい． 食べ 物を 持っている 者も， そうしなさい． 」
- 取稅人たちも， バプテスマ を 受けに 出て 來て， 言った． 「先生． 私たちはどうすればよいのでしょう． 」
- ヨハネ は 彼らに 言った． 「決められたもの 以上には， 何も 取り 立ててはいけません． 」
- 兵士たちも， 彼に 尋ねて 言った． 「私たちはどうすればよいのでしょうか． 」 ヨハネ は 言った． 「だれからも， 力ずくで 金をゆすったり， 無實の 者を 責めたりしてはいけません． 自分の 給料で 滿足しなさい． 」
- 民衆は 救い 主を 待ち 望んでおり， みな 心の 中で， ヨハネ について， もしかするとこの 方が キリスト ではあるまいか， と 考えていたので，

- John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
- His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."
- And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them.
- But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and all the other evil things he had done,
- Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

- ヨハネ はみなに 答えて 言った． 「私は 水であなたがたに バプテスマ を 授けています． しかし， 私よりもさらに 力のある 方がおいでになります． 私などは， その 方のくつのひもを 解く 値うちもありません． その 方は， あなたがたに 聖靈と 火との バプテスマ をお 授けになります．
- また 手に 箕を 持って 脫穀場をことごとくきよめ， 麥を 倉に 納め， 殼を 消えない 火で 燒き 盡くされます． 」
- ヨハネ は， そのほかにも 多くのことを 敎えて， 民衆に 福音を 知らせた．
- さて 國主 ヘロデ は， その 兄弟の 妻 ヘロデヤ のことについて， また， 自分の 行なった 惡事のすべてを， ヨハネ に 責められたので，
- ヨハネ を 牢に 閉じ ¿め， すべての 惡事にもう 一つこの 惡事を 加えた．

- When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened
- and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."

- さて， 民衆がみな バプテスマ を 受けていたころ， イエス も バプテスマ をお 受けになり， そして 祈っておられると， 天が 開け，
- 聖靈が， 鳩のような 形をして， 自分の 上に 下られるのをご 覽になった． また， 天から 聲がした． 「あなたは， わたしの 愛する 子， わたしはあなたを 喜ぶ． 」
