- "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.
- At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores
- and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
- "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.
- In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.

- ある 金持ちがいた． いつも 紫の 衣や 細布を 着て， 每日ぜいたくに 遊び 暮らしていた．
- ところが， その 門前に ラザロ という 全身おできの 貧乏人が 寢ていて，
- 金持ちの 食卓から 落ちる 物で 腹を 滿たしたいと 思っていた． 犬もやって 來ては， 彼のおできをなめていた．
- さて， この 貧乏人は 死んで， 御使いたちによって アブラハム のふところに 連れて 行かれた． 金持ちも 死んで 葬られた．
- その 金持ちは， ハデス で 苦しみながら 目を 上げると， アブラハム が， はるかかなたに 見えた． しかも， そのふところに ラザロ が 見えた．

- So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
- "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.
- And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'
- "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house,
- for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'

- 彼は 叫んで 言った． 『父 アブラハム さま． 私をあわれんでください． ラザロ が 指先を 水に 浸して 私の 舌を 冷やすように， ラザロ をよこしてください． 私はこの 炎の 中で， 苦しくてたまりません． 』
- アブラハム は 言った． 『子よ． 思い 出してみなさい． おまえは 生きている 間， 良い 物を 受け， ラザロ は 生きている 間， 惡い 物を 受けていました． しかし， 今ここで 彼は 慰められ， おまえは 苦しみもだえているのです．
- そればかりでなく， 私たちとおまえたちの 間には， 大きな 淵があります． ここからそちらへ 渡ろうとしても， 渡れないし， そこからこちらへ 越えて 來ることもできないのです． 』
- 彼は 言った． 『父よ． ではお 願いです． ラザロ を 私の 父の 家に 送ってください．
- 私には 兄弟が 五人ありますが， 彼らまでこんな 苦しみの 場所に 來ることのないように， よく 言い 聞かせてください． 』

- "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'
- " 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
- "He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "

- しかし アブラハム は 言った． 『彼らには， モ ― セ と 預言者があります． その 言うことを 聞くべきです． 』
- 彼は 言った． 『いいえ， 父 アブラハム ． もし， だれかが 死んだ 者の 中から 彼らのところに 行ってやったら， 彼らは 悔い 改めるに 違いありません． 』
- アブラハム は 彼に 言った． 『もし モ ― セ と 預言者との 敎えに 耳を 傾けないのなら， たといだれかが 死人の 中から 生き 返っても， 彼らは 聞き 入れはしない． 』」
