- It was not through law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.
- For if those who live by law are heirs, faith has no value and the promise is worthless,
- because law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.
- Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring--not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.
- As it is written: "I have made you a father of many nations." He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed--the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.

- なぜなら， 世界を 相續させるとの 約束が， アブラハム とその 子孫とに 對してなされたのは， 律法によるのではなく， 信仰の 義によるからである．
- もし， 律法に 立つ 人¿が 相續人であるとすれば， 信仰はむなしくなり， 約束もまた 無效になってしまう．
- いったい， 律法は 怒りを 招くものであって， 律法のないところには 違反なるものはない．
- このようなわけで， すべては 信仰によるのである． それは 惠みによるのであって， すべての 子孫に， すなわち， 律法に 立つ 者だけにではなく， アブラハム の 信仰に 從う 者にも， この 約束が 保證されるのである． アブラハム は， 神の 前で， わたしたちすべての 者の 父であって，
- 「わたしは， あなたを 立てて 多くの 國民の 父とした 」と 書いてあるとおりである． 彼はこの 神， すなわち， 死人を 生かし， 無から 有を 呼び 出される 神を 信じたのである．

- Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
- Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead--since he was about a hundred years old--and that Sarah's womb was also dead.
- Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,
- being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.
- This is why "it was credited to him as righteousness."

- 彼は 望み 得ないのに， なおも 望みつつ 信じた． そのために， 「あなたの 子孫はこうなるであろう 」と 言われているとおり， 多くの 國民の 父となったのである．
- すなわち， およそ 百歲となって， 彼自身のからだが 死んだ 狀態であり， また， サラ の 胎が 不妊であるのを 認めながらも， なお 彼の 信仰は 弱らなかった．
- 彼は， 神の 約束を 不信仰のゆえに 疑うようなことはせず， かえって 信仰によって 强められ， 榮光を 神に 歸し，
- 神はその 約束されたことを， また 成就することができると 確信した．
- だから， 彼は 義と 認められたのである．

- The words "it was credited to him" were written not for him alone,
- but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness--for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.
- He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

- しかし「義と 認められた 」と 書いてあるのは， アブラハム のためだけではなく，
- わたしたちのためでもあって， わたしたちの 主 イエス を 死人の 中からよみがえらせたかたを 信じるわたしたちも， 義と 認められるのである．
- 主は， わたしたちの 罪過のために 死に 渡され， わたしたちが 義とされるために， よみがえらされたのである．
