- "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.
- At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores
- and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
- "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.
- In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.

- 「ある 金持ちがいた． いつも 紫の 衣や 柔らかい 麻布を 着て， 每日ぜいたくに 遊び 暮らしていた．
- この 金持ちの 門前に， ラザロ というできものだらけの 貧しい 人が 橫たわり，
- その 食卓から 落ちる 物で 腹を 滿たしたいものだと 思っていた． 犬もやって 來ては， そのできものをなめた．
- やがて， この 貧しい 人は 死んで， 天使たちによって 宴席にいる アブラハム のすぐそばに 連れて 行かれた． 金持ちも 死んで 葬られた．
- そして， 金持ちは 陰府でさいなまれながら 目を 上げると， 宴席で アブラハム とそのすぐそばにいる ラザロ とが， はるかかなたに 見えた．

- So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
- "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.
- And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'
- "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house,
- for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'

- そこで， 大聲で 言った． 『父 アブラハム よ， わたしを 憐れんでください． ラザロ をよこして， 指先を 水に 浸し， わたしの 舌を 冷やさせてください． わたしはこの 炎の 中でもだえ 苦しんでいます． 』
- しかし， アブラハム は 言った． 『子よ， 思い 出してみるがよい． お 前は 生きている 間に 良いものをもらっていたが， ラザロ は 反對に 惡いものをもらっていた． 今は， ここで 彼は 慰められ， お 前はもだえ 苦しむのだ．
- そればかりか， わたしたちとお 前たちの 間には 大きな 淵があって， ここからお 前たちの 方へ 渡ろうとしてもできないし， そこからわたしたちの 方に 越えて 來ることもできない． 』
- 金持ちは 言った． 『父よ， ではお 願いです． わたしの 父親の 家に ラザロ を 遣わしてください．
- わたしには 兄弟が 五人います． あの 者たちまで， こんな 苦しい 場所に 來ることのないように， よく 言い 聞かせてください． 』

- "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'
- " 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
- "He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "

- しかし， アブラハム は 言った． 『お 前の 兄弟たちには モ ― セ と 預言者がいる． 彼らに 耳を 傾けるがよい． 』
- 金持ちは 言った． 『いいえ， 父 アブラハム よ， もし， 死んだ 者の 中からだれかが 兄弟のところに 行ってやれば， 悔い 改めるでしょう． 』
- アブラハム は 言った． 『もし， モ ― セ と 預言者に 耳を 傾けないのなら， たとえ 死者の 中から 生き 返る 者があっても， その 言うことを 聞き 入れはしないだろう． 』」
