사사기 20:17-21:25

 베냐민 지파를 상대로 전쟁하던 이스라엘 연합군은 두 번 연속으로 패배했다. 그러나 하나님께 금식하고 제사드리며 하나님의 뜻을 구하여 응답받고 난 후 베냐민 지파를 섬멸할 수 있었다. 베냐민 자손들 중 용사 600명을 제외한 전원을 몰살시킨 연합군은 미스바 총회에 불참한 길르앗을 징계하였고, 길르앗과 실로 여인들을 취하여 베냐민 사람들의 아내를 삼게 함으로써 베냐민 지파의 멸절을 막았다.
  
  이스라엘과 베냐민의 전쟁(20:17-20:48)    
 
  1. 이스라엘 사람들에게는, 베냐민 자손을 제외하고도, 칼을 쓸 줄 아는 사람이 사십만 명이나 있었는데, 그들은 모두 잘 싸우는 용사였다.
  2. 이스라엘 자손이 일어나 베델로 올라가서, 하나님께 여쭈었다. "우리 가운데 어느 지파가 먼저 올라가서 베냐민 자손과 싸워야 합니까?" 주님께서 말씀하셨다. "유다 지파가 먼저 올라가거라."
  3. 다음날 아침에 이스라엘 자손이 출동하여, 기브아 맞은편에 진을 쳤다.
  4. 이스라엘 사람은 베냐민 자손과 싸우려고 나가서, 기브아를 마주 보고 전투태세를 갖추었다.
  5. 그러자 베냐민 자손이 기브아에서 나와, 그 날에 이스라엘 사람 이만 이천 명을 땅에 쓰러뜨렸다.
  1. Israel, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen, all of them fighting men.
  2. The Israelites went up to Bethel and inquired of God. They said, "Who of us shall go first to fight against the Benjamites?" The LORD replied, "Judah shall go first."
  3. The next morning the Israelites got up and pitched camp near Gibeah.
  4. The men of Israel went out to fight the Benjamites and took up battle positions against them at Gibeah.
  5. The Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down twenty-two thousand Israelites on the battlefield that day.
  1. 그래서 이스라엘 자손은 베델로 올라가서, 주님 앞에서 날이 저물도록 목놓아 울면서 여쭈었다. "우리가 다시 가서, 우리의 동기 베냐민 자손과 싸워도 되겠습니까?" 그 때에 주님께서 "올라가서 싸워라!" 하고 말씀하셨다. 이스라엘 사람들은 스스로 용기를 내어, 첫날 대열을 갖추었던 그 곳으로 가서, 다시 전투태세를 갖추었다.
  3. 그 이튿날에 이스라엘 자손이 베냐민 자손을 치려고 가까이 나아갔다.
  4. 베냐민 자손은 이튿날에도 그들을 대항하려고 기브아에서 나와서, 이스라엘 자손 만 팔천 명을 땅에 쓰러뜨렸는데, 죽은 이들은 모두 칼을 쓸 줄 아는 사람들이었다.
  5. 그러자 온 이스라엘 자손은 베델로 올라가서, 주님 앞에서 목놓아 울었다. 그들은 거기에 앉아서 날이 저물도록 금식하고, 주님께 화목제와 번제를 드리고,
  1. But the men of Israel encouraged one another and again took up their positions where they had stationed themselves the first day.
  2. The Israelites went up and wept before the LORD until evening, and they inquired of the LORD. They said, "Shall we go up again to battle against the Benjamites, our brothers?" The LORD answered, "Go up against them."
  3. Then the Israelites drew near to Benjamin the second day.
  4. This time, when the Benjamites came out from Gibeah to oppose them, they cut down another eighteen thousand Israelites, all of them armed with swords.
  5. Then the Israelites, all the people, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the LORD. They fasted that day until evening and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the LORD.
  1. 주님께 여쭈었다. （그 때는 하나님의 언약궤가 베델에 있었고,
  2. 아론의 손자이며 엘르아살의 아들인 비느하스가 제사장으로 있는 때였다.） "우리가 또다시 올라가서 우리의 동기 베냐민 자손과 싸워도 되겠습니까, 아니면 그만두어야 하겠습니까?" 주님께서 말씀하셨다. "올라가거라. 내일은 틀림없이 내가 그들을 너희 손에 넘겨 주겠다."
  3. 이스라엘이 기브아 둘레에 군인들을 매복시켰다.
  4. 사흘째 되는 날 이스라엘 자손은 베냐민 자손을 치러 올라가서, 전과 마찬가지로 기브아 쪽으로 전투태세를 갖추었다.
  5. 베냐민 자손도 그들을 대항하려고 나왔으나, 꾐에 빠져 성읍에서 멀리 떠나게 되었다. 베냐민 자손은, 한 쪽은 베델로 올라가는 길과 만나고 다른 한 쪽은 기브아로 가는 길과 만나는 큰 길과 들에서, 전과 같이 이스라엘 자손을 치기 시작하여, 그들을 서른 명 가량 죽였다.
  1. And the Israelites inquired of the LORD. (In those days the ark of the covenant of God was there,
  2. with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, ministering before it.) They asked, "Shall we go up again to battle with Benjamin our brother, or not?" The LORD responded, "Go, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands."
  3. Then Israel set an ambush around Gibeah.
  4. They went up against the Benjamites on the third day and took up positions against Gibeah as they had done before.
  5. The Benjamites came out to meet them and were drawn away from the city. They began to inflict casualties on the Israelites as before, so that about thirty men fell in the open field and on the roads--the one leading to Bethel and the other to Gibeah.
  1. 그러자 베냐민 자손은 이스라엘 자손이 처음과 같이 자기들에게 지고 있다고 생각하였다. 그러나 이스라엘 자손은 "우리가 도망치는 척하여 그들을 성읍에서 큰 길까지 꾀어 내자" 하고 말하였다.
  2. 그 때에 모든 이스라엘 주력부대는 자기들이 있던 자리에서 일어나 바알다말에서 대열을 갖추었으며, 이스라엘의 매복부대는 기브아 주변에 숨어 있다가 거기에서 쏟아져 나왔다.
  3. 온 이스라엘에서 뽑힌 만 명이 기브아 정면에 이르자 전투는 치열해졌다. 그러나 베냐민 자손은 자기들에게 재앙이 미친 것을 알지 못하였다.
  4. 주님께서 이스라엘 앞에서 베냐민을 치셨으므로, 그 날 이스라엘 자손이 칼을 쓸 줄 아는 베냐민 사람 이만 오천백 명을 모두 쳐죽였다.
  5. 그제서야 베냐민 자손은 자기들이 패한 것을 알았다. 이스라엘의 주력부대가 자기들이 있던 자리를 베냐민에게 내주고 물러선 것은, 기브아 둘레에 매복시켜 둔 병력을 믿었기 때문이다.
  1. While the Benjamites were saying, "We are defeating them as before," the Israelites were saying, "Let's retreat and draw them away from the city to the roads."
  2. All the men of Israel moved from their places and took up positions at Baal Tamar, and the Israelite ambush charged out of its place on the west of Gibeah.
  3. Then ten thousand of Israel's finest men made a frontal attack on Gibeah. The fighting was so heavy that the Benjamites did not realize how near disaster was.
  4. The LORD defeated Benjamin before Israel, and on that day the Israelites struck down 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords.
  5. Then the Benjamites saw that they were beaten. Now the men of Israel had given way before Benjamin, because they relied on the ambush they had set near Gibeah.
  1. 매복한 군인들이 급히 나와 기브아로 돌격하여 사방으로 흩어져서, 칼날로 기브아의 성읍 주민을 다 쳐죽였다.
  2. 이스라엘 주력부대와 매복부대 사이에서는, 성읍에서 큰 연기가 구름기둥처럼 치솟는 것으로 신호를 삼자는 약속이 이미 되어 있었다.
  3. 이스라엘 사람들이 싸우다가 물러서자, 베냐민 사람들은 이스라엘 사람들 서른 명 가량을 쳐죽이면서, 이스라엘 사람들이 지난번 싸움에서처럼 자기들에게 꼼짝없이 진다고 생각하였다.
  4. 그러나 성읍에서 연기가 구름기둥처럼 치솟아오를 때에 베냐민 사람들이 뒤돌아보니, 온 성읍이 불바다가 되어 불길이 하늘로 치솟는 것이 아닌가!
  5. 이스라엘 사람들이 반격하니, 베냐민 사람들은 패색이 짙은 것을 깨닫고, 몹시 겁에 질렸다.
  1. The men who had been in ambush made a sudden dash into Gibeah, spread out and put the whole city to the sword.
  2. The men of Israel had arranged with the ambush that they should send up a great cloud of smoke from the city,
  3. and then the men of Israel would turn in the battle. The Benjamites had begun to inflict casualties on the men of Israel (about thirty), and they said, "We are defeating them as in the first battle."
  4. But when the column of smoke began to rise from the city, the Benjamites turned and saw the smoke of the whole city going up into the sky.
  5. Then the men of Israel turned on them, and the men of Benjamin were terrified, because they realized that disaster had come upon them.
  1. 그들은 이스라엘 사람들 앞에서 물러나 광야길로 방향을 돌렸으나, 퇴로가 막혔다. 그들은 이스라엘 주력부대와 성읍을 치고 나온 부대 사이에 끼여 협살당하고 말았다.
  2. 이스라엘 사람들은 베냐민 사람들을 포위하고, 쉬지 않고 동쪽으로 기브아 맞은쪽에 이르기까지 추격하며 쳐부수었다.
  3. 그 때에 베냐민 사람들이 만 팔천 명이나 쓰러졌는데, 그들은 모두 용사였다.
  4. 베냐민의 나머지 패잔병은 방향을 바꾸어 광야 쪽 림몬 바위 있는 데까지 도망쳤으나, 이스라엘 사람들이 큰 길에서 오천 명을 이삭 줍듯이 모조리 죽이고, 기돔에까지 쫓아가서 덮쳐 또 이천 명을 죽였다.
  5. 베냐민 사람들 가운데서 칼을 쓸 줄 아는 사람 이만 오천 명이 그 날 모두 쓰러졌는데, 그들은 모두 용사들이었다.
  1. So they fled before the Israelites in the direction of the desert, but they could not escape the battle. And the men of Israel who came out of the towns cut them down there.
  2. They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them and easily overran them in the vicinity of Gibeah on the east.
  3. Eighteen thousand Benjamites fell, all of them valiant fighters.
  4. As they turned and fled toward the desert to the rock of Rimmon, the Israelites cut down five thousand men along the roads. They kept pressing after the Benjamites as far as Gidom and struck down two thousand more.
  5. On that day twenty-five thousand Benjamite swordsmen fell, all of them valiant fighters.
  1. 그러나 육백 명은 방향을 돌려 광야 쪽 림몬 바위까지 도망쳐서, 넉 달을 그 림몬 바위 있는 곳에서 숨어 살았다.
  2. 이스라엘 사람들은 다시 베냐민 자손에게로 돌아와서, 그 성읍에서 사람이나 가축 할 것 없이 닥치는 대로 모두 칼로 쳐서 죽였다. 그들은 그 일대의 성읍도 모두 불살랐다.
  1. But six hundred men turned and fled into the desert to the rock of Rimmon, where they stayed four months.
  2. The men of Israel went back to Benjamin and put all the towns to the sword, including the animals and everything else they found. All the towns they came across they set on fire.
 
  베냐민을 위한 대책(21:1-21:25)    
 
  1. 이스라엘 사람들은 이미 미스바에서 "우리 가운데서는 아무도 딸을 베냐민 사람과 결혼시키지 않도록 하자!" 하고 맹세한 일이 있었다.
  2. 이스라엘 백성은 베델에 이르러, 거기에서 저녁이 되도록 하나님 앞에 앉아 소리를 높여 크게 통곡하였다.
  3. 그들은 울부짖었다. "주 이스라엘의 하나님, 어찌하여 이런 일이 이스라엘에서 일어났습니까? 오늘 한 지파가 끝내 이스라엘에서 없어지고 말았습니다."
  4. 다음날 아침이 되자, 백성은 일찍 일어나 거기에 한 제단을 쌓고 번제와 화목제를 드렸다.
  5. 그런 다음에 이스라엘 자손은 이스라엘 모든 지파 가운데서 어느 지파가 주님 앞에 모인 그 총회에 참석하지 않았는지 알아보았다. 누구든지 미스바에 올라와서 주님 앞에 나아오지 않으면, 죽이기로 굳게 맹세하였기 때문이다.
  1. The men of Israel had taken an oath at Mizpah: "Not one of us will give his daughter in marriage to a Benjamite."
  2. The people went to Bethel, where they sat before God until evening, raising their voices and weeping bitterly.
  3. "O LORD, the God of Israel," they cried, "why has this happened to Israel? Why should one tribe be missing from Israel today?"
  4. Early the next day the people built an altar and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings.
  5. Then the Israelites asked, "Who from all the tribes of Israel has failed to assemble before the LORD ?" For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who failed to assemble before the LORD at Mizpah should certainly be put to death.
  1. 이스라엘 자손은 그들의 동기 베냐민 자손에 대하여 측은한 마음이 생겨서 "오늘 이스라엘에서 지파 하나가 없어져 버렸다.
  2. 우리 스스로가 이미 우리 딸을 그들과는 결혼시키지 않기로 주님께 맹세하였으니, 우리가 어떻게 해야 그 살아 남은 사람들에게 아내를 구해 줄 수 있겠는가?" 하고 걱정하였다.
  3. 그래서 그들은 이스라엘 지파 가운데 어느 지파가 미스바에 올라오지 않았는지, 주님 앞에 나아오지 않았는지를 알아보았다. 그러자 길르앗의 야베스에서는 한 사람도 진으로 오지도 않고, 이 총회에도 참석하지 않은 사실이 드러났다.
  4. 그들이 백성을 일일이 살펴보니, 정말 길르앗의 야베스 주민은 한 사람도 없었다.
  5. 그래서 회중은 가장 용감한 군인 만 이천 명을 그리로 보내면서 명령하였다. "너희는 가서 길르앗의 야베스 주민을, 여자나 어린 아이 할 것 없이, 칼로 쳐서 죽여라.
  1. Now the Israelites grieved for their brothers, the Benjamites. "Today one tribe is cut off from Israel," they said.
  2. "How can we provide wives for those who are left, since we have taken an oath by the LORD not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?"
  3. Then they asked, "Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to assemble before the LORD at Mizpah?" They discovered that no one from Jabesh Gilead had come to the camp for the assembly.
  4. For when they counted the people, they found that none of the people of Jabesh Gilead were there.
  5. So the assembly sent twelve thousand fighting men with instructions to go to Jabesh Gilead and put to the sword those living there, including the women and children.
  1. 너희가 할 일은, 남자를 모두 죽이고, 남자와 동침한 일이 있는 여자도 모조리 죽이는 것이다."
  2. 그들은 길르앗의 야베스 주민 가운데서 아직 남자와 한번도 동침하지 않은 처녀 사백 명을 찾아내어, 가나안 땅의 실로에 있는 진으로 데리고 왔다.
  3. 그리고 나서 온 회중은 림몬 바위에 숨어서 사는 베냐민 자손에게 사람을 보내어 그들과 화친을 선언한다는 말을 전하였다.
  4. 그 때에 베냐민 자손이 돌아오니, 이스라엘 사람들은 길르앗의 야베스의 여자들 가운데서 살려둔 여자들을 그들과 결혼시켰다. 그러나 여자의 수가 모자랐다.
  5. 주님께서 이스라엘 지파들 가운데서 한 지파가 비어 틈이 생기게 하셨으므로, 이스라엘 백성은 베냐민 지파가 딱하다는 생각이 들었다.
  1. "This is what you are to do," they said. "Kill every male and every woman who is not a virgin."
  2. They found among the people living in Jabesh Gilead four hundred young women who had never slept with a man, and they took them to the camp at Shiloh in Canaan.
  3. Then the whole assembly sent an offer of peace to the Benjamites at the rock of Rimmon.
  4. So the Benjamites returned at that time and were given the women of Jabesh Gilead who had been spared. But there were not enough for all of them.
  5. The people grieved for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a gap in the tribes of Israel.
  1. 그 때에 회중의 장로들이 걱정하였다. "베냐민 지파 가운데서 여자들이 다 죽었으니, 이제 우리가 어떻게 하여야 살아 남은 남자들에게 아내를 짝지어 줄 수 있겠습니까?"
  2. 그들이 또 말하였다. "베냐민 지파에서 살아 남은 남자들에게도 유산이 있어야, 이스라엘 가운데서 한 지파가 없어지지 않을 것입니다.
  3. 그러나 이미 이스라엘 자손이, 자기 딸을 베냐민 사람과 결혼시키는 사람은 누구든지 저주를 받을 것이라고 맹세하였으니, 우리는 아무도 우리의 딸들을 그들과 결혼시킬 수 없습니다."
  4. 그래서 그들은 한 묘안을 생각해 냈다. "그렇다! 실로에서 해마다 열리는 주님의 축제가 곧 다가온다." （실로는 베델 북쪽, 르보나 남쪽, 베델에서 세겜으로 올라가는 큰 길 동쪽에 있다.）
  5. 그리고 그들은 베냐민 자손에게 이렇게 지시하였다. "당신들은 가서 포도원에 숨어서
  1. And the elders of the assembly said, "With the women of Benjamin destroyed, how shall we provide wives for the men who are left?
  2. The Benjamite survivors must have heirs," they said, "so that a tribe of Israel will not be wiped out.
  3. We can't give them our daughters as wives, since we Israelites have taken this oath: 'Cursed be anyone who gives a wife to a Benjamite.'
  4. But look, there is the annual festival of the LORD in Shiloh, to the north of Bethel, and east of the road that goes from Bethel to Shechem, and to the south of Lebonah."
  5. So they instructed the Benjamites, saying, "Go and hide in the vineyards
  1. 살피다가, 실로의 처녀들이 춤을 추러 나오면, 포도원에서 달려나와, 그 실로의 처녀들 가운데서 하나씩 붙들어 아내를 삼아, 베냐민 땅으로 돌아가시오.
  2. 그들의 아버지들이나 오라버니들이 우리에게 와서 시비를 걸면, 우리가 그들에게 '전쟁에서 여자를 잡아다가 아내로 삼듯 여자들을 빼앗아 온 것이 아니니, 딸들을 그들의 아내로 삼도록 하여 주시오. 또 당신들이 딸들을 그들에게 준 것이 아니니, 당신들이 맹세한 것을 스스로 깨뜨린 것도 아니오' 하고 답변해 주겠소."
  3. 그래서 베냐민 자손은 그 지시대로 하였다. 그들은, 춤추는 여자들 가운데서 자신들의 수효만큼 여자들을 붙들어 아내로 삼고, 자기들이 유산으로 얻은 땅으로 돌아가서, 성읍들을 재건하고, 거기에서 살았다.
  4. 그 때에야 이스라엘 자손도 그 곳을 떠나, 각자 자기 지파와 자기 가족에게로 돌아갔다. 곧 각자가 그 곳에서 떠나 자기가 유산으로 얻은 땅으로 돌아간 것이다.
  5. 그 때에는 이스라엘에 왕이 없었으므로, 사람들은 저마다 자기의 뜻에 맞는 대로 하였다.
  1. and watch. When the girls of Shiloh come out to join in the dancing, then rush from the vineyards and each of you seize a wife from the girls of Shiloh and go to the land of Benjamin.
  2. When their fathers or brothers complain to us, we will say to them, 'Do us a kindness by helping them, because we did not get wives for them during the war, and you are innocent, since you did not give your daughters to them.' "
  3. So that is what the Benjamites did. While the girls were dancing, each man caught one and carried her off to be his wife. Then they returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the towns and settled in them.
  4. At that time the Israelites left that place and went home to their tribes and clans, each to his own inheritance.
  5. In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.
