- 에스라가 하나님의 성전 앞에 엎드려 울면서 기도하며 죄를 자백하자, 이스라엘 사람도 남자, 여자, 어린아이 할 것 없이, 많은 무리가 에스라 주변에 모여서, 큰소리로 슬피 울었다.
- 그 때에 엘람의 자손 여히엘의 아들 스가냐가 에스라에게 말하였다. "우리가 주변에 있는 이 땅의 백성에게서 이방 여자를 데려와서 아내로 삼음으로써, 하나님께 죄를 지었지만, 아직도 이스라엘에 희망은 있습니다.
- 이제 우리는 하나님의 명령을 두려워하면서 받드는 분들의 권면과, 에스라 제사장님의 가르침을 따라서, 이방 여자들과 그들에게서 난 아이들을 다 보낼 것을 하나님 앞에서 언약하겠습니다. 율법대로 하겠습니다.
- 그러므로 이제 일어나십시오. 이 모든 일은 제사장님이 맡아서 하셔야 합니다. 우리가 제사장님을 도와 드리겠습니다. 용기 있게 밀고 나가십시오."
- 이 말을 듣고, 에스라가 일어나서, 지도급 제사장들과 레위 사람들과 온 이스라엘 사람에게 그들이 말한 대로 하겠다고 맹세하라고 요구하니, 그들은 그대로 맹세하였다.

- While Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a large crowd of Israelites--men, women and children--gathered around him. They too wept bitterly.
- Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam, said to Ezra, "We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples around us. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel.
- Now let us make a covenant before our God to send away all these women and their children, in accordance with the counsel of my lord and of those who fear the commands of our God. Let it be done according to the Law.
- Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it."
- So Ezra rose up and put the leading priests and Levites and all Israel under oath to do what had been suggested. And they took the oath.

- 에스라는 하나님의 성전 앞에서 물러 나와, 엘리아십의 아들 여호하난의 방으로 들어가서, 포로로 잡혀 갔다가 돌아온 백성이 지은 죄 때문에, 밤이 새도록 밥도 먹지 않고, 물도 마시지 않으며, 슬피 울었다.
- 잡혀 갔다가 돌아온 백성은 모두 예루살렘으로 모이라는 명령이 예루살렘과 온 유다 땅에 내렸다.
- 사흘 안에 오지 않는 사람은, 지도자들과 원로들의 결정에 따라 재산을 빼앗고, 잡혀 갔다가 돌아온 백성의 모임에서 내쫓는다고 하니,
- 사흘 안에 유다와 베냐민 사람들이 모두 예루살렘에 모였다. 그 때가 아홉째 달 이십일이다. 온 백성이 하나님의 성전 앞뜰에 모여 앉아서 떨고 있었다. 사태가 이러한 터에, 큰비까지 내리고 있었기 때문이다.
- 드디어, 에스라 제사장이 나서서, 그들에게 말하였다. "여러분은 이방 여자들과 결혼하였으므로, 배신자가 되었습니다. 그것 때문에, 이스라엘의 죄가 더욱 커졌습니다.

- Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. While he was there, he ate no food and drank no water, because he continued to mourn over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
- A proclamation was then issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem for all the exiles to assemble in Jerusalem.
- Anyone who failed to appear within three days would forfeit all his property, in accordance with the decision of the officials and elders, and would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles.
- Within the three days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin had gathered in Jerusalem. And on the twentieth day of the ninth month, all the people were sitting in the square before the house of God, greatly distressed by the occasion and because of the rain.
- Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have been unfaithful; you have married foreign women, adding to Israel's guilt.

- 이제 주 여러분의 조상의 하나님께 죄를 자백하고, 그의 뜻을 따르십시오. 이 땅에 있는 이방 백성과 관계를 끊고, 여러분이 데리고 사는 이방인 아내들과도 인연을 끊어야 합니다."
- 온 회중이 큰 목소리로 대답하였다. "옳으신 말씀입니다. 우리는 반드시 말씀하신 대로 하겠습니다.
- 그렇지만 여기에 모인 사람들의 수가 많고, 때가 장마철이므로, 이렇게 바깥에 서 있기가 어렵습니다. 더구나 이 일은 우리의 잘못이 너무나 커서, 하루 이틀에 처리될 문제가 아닙니다.
- 그러므로 대표를 뽑아서, 모든 회중의 일을 맡기는 것이 좋겠습니다. 마을마다 이방 여자와 결혼한 사람들에게는 날짜를 정하여 주어서, 그들이 자기 마을의 원로들과 재판장들과 함께 나오게 하고, 이 일 때문에 일어난 우리 하나님의 진노를 풀어 드리는 것이 좋겠습니다."
- 오직, 아사헬의 아들 요나단과 디과의 아들 야스야만 이 의견에 반대하였으며, 므술람과 레위 사람 삽브대가 그들에게 동조하였을 뿐이다.

- Now make confession to the LORD, the God of your fathers, and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples around you and from your foreign wives."
- The whole assembly responded with a loud voice: "You are right! We must do as you say.
- But there are many people here and it is the rainy season; so we cannot stand outside. Besides, this matter cannot be taken care of in a day or two, because we have sinned greatly in this thing.
- Let our officials act for the whole assembly. Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at a set time, along with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God in this matter is turned away from us."
- Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, supported by Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite, opposed this.

- 포로로 사로잡혀 갔다가 돌아온 백성들은, 많은 쪽의 의견을 따르기로 하였다. 에스라 제사장은 각 가문의 갈래마다 한 사람씩을 우두머리로 뽑아서, 그들에게 책임을 맡겼다. 이방 여자와 결혼한 사람들에 대한 조사는, 열째 달 초하루에 시작하여,
- 이듬 해 첫째 달 초하루에 끝났다.
- 제사장의 무리 가운데서 이방 여자와 결혼한 사람들은 다음과 같다. 요사닥의 아들 예수아 및 그 형제들의 자손 가운데서는 마아세야와 엘리에셀과 야립과 그달리야이다.
- 그들은 모두 손을 들어서, 아내를 내보내겠다고 서약하고, 지은 죄가 있으므로, 각자 숫양 한 마리씩을 잡아서 속죄제물로 바쳤다.
- 임멜의 자손 가운데서는 하나니와 스바댜요,

- So the exiles did as was proposed. Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, one from each family division, and all of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to investigate the cases,
- and by the first day of the first month they finished dealing with all the men who had married foreign women.
- Among the descendants of the priests, the following had married foreign women: From the descendants of Jeshua son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib and Gedaliah.
- (They all gave their hands in pledge to put away their wives, and for their guilt they each presented a ram from the flock as a guilt offering.)
- From the descendants of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah.

- Among the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah and Eliezer.
- From the singers: Eliashib. From the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem and Uri.
- And among the other Israelites: From the descendants of Parosh: Ramiah, Izziah, Malkijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malkijah and Benaiah.

- 이들은 모두 이방 여자와 결혼한 남자이다. 이방 여자 가운데는 자식을 낳은 사람들도 있었다.
