느헤미야 5:1-6:19

 성벽 공사가 어렵게 진행되는 동안 백성들 사이에서 취리 행위로 인한 문제가 발생하였고, 백성들은 부르짖어 불평하였다. 이에 느헤미야는 취리 행위를 금지시키고 발생한 문제들을 해결하였다. 또한 대적들은 느헤미야를 죽이려는 음모를 꾸몄으나 실패로 돌아갔다. 성벽 건축은 완료되었다.
  
  가난한 자들을 도움(5:1-5:19)    
 
  1. 백성 사이에서 유다인 동포를 원망하는 소리가 크게 일고 있다. 부인들이 더 아우성이다.
  2. 더러는 이렇게 울부짖는다. "우리 아들딸들, 거기에다 우리까지, 이렇게 식구가 많으니, 입에 풀칠이라도 하고 살아가려면, 곡식이라도 가져 오자!"
  3. 또 어떤 이들은 이렇게 울부짖는다. "배가 고파서 곡식을 얻느라고, 우리는 밭도 포도원도 집도 다 잡혔다!"
  4. 또 어떤 이들은 이렇게 외친다. "우리는 왕에게 세금을 낼 돈이 없어서, 밭과 포도원을 잡히고 돈을 꾸어야만 했다!"
  5. 또 더러는 이렇게 탄식한다. "우리의 몸이라고 해서, 유다인 동포들의 몸과 무엇이 다르냐? 우리의 자식이라고 해서 그들의 자식과 무엇이 다르단 말이냐? 그런데도 우리가 아들딸을 종으로 팔아야 하다니! 우리의 딸 가운데는 벌써 노예가 된 아이들도 있는데, 밭과 포도원이 다 남의 것이 되어서, 우리는 어떻게 손을 쓸 수도 없다."
  1. Now the men and their wives raised a great outcry against their Jewish brothers.
  2. Some were saying, "We and our sons and daughters are numerous; in order for us to eat and stay alive, we must get grain."
  3. Others were saying, "We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards and our homes to get grain during the famine."
  4. Still others were saying, "We have had to borrow money to pay the king's tax on our fields and vineyards.
  5. Although we are of the same flesh and blood as our countrymen and though our sons are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others."
  1. 그들의 울부짖음과 탄식을 듣고 보니, 나 또한 치밀어 오르는 분노를 참을 수가 없다.
  2. 나는 그들이 울부짖는 내용을 신중하게 살핀 다음에, 귀족들과 관리들에게, 어찌하여 같은 겨레끼리 돈놀이를 하느냐고 호되게 나무랐다. 이 문제를 다루어야 하겠기에, 나는 대회를 열고서,
  3. 귀족들과 관리들에게 말하였다. "우리는, 이방 사람들에게 팔려서 종이 된 유다인 동포를, 애써 몸값을 치르고 데려왔소. 그런데 지금 당신들은 동포를 또 팔고 있소. 이제 우리더러 그들을 다시 사오라는 말이오?" 이렇게 말하였으나, 그들 가운데 대답하는 사람이 아무도 없다. 그들에게도 할 말이 없을 것이다.
  4. 내가 말을 계속하였다. "당신들이 한 처사는 옳지 않습니다. 이방인 원수들에게 웃음거리가 되지 않으려거든, 하나님을 두려워하면서 살아야 합니다.
  5. 나도, 나의 친족도, 그리고 내 아랫사람들도, 백성에게 돈과 곡식을 꾸어 주고 있습니다. 제발, 이제부터는 백성에게서 이자 받는 것을 그만둡시다.
  1. When I heard their outcry and these charges, I was very angry.
  2. I pondered them in my mind and then accused the nobles and officials. I told them, "You are exacting usury from your own countrymen!" So I called together a large meeting to deal with them
  3. and said: "As far as possible, we have bought back our Jewish brothers who were sold to the Gentiles. Now you are selling your brothers, only for them to be sold back to us!" They kept quiet, because they could find nothing to say.
  4. So I continued, "What you are doing is not right. Shouldn't you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of our Gentile enemies?
  5. I and my brothers and my men are also lending the people money and grain. But let the exacting of usury stop!
  1. 그러니 당신들도 밭과 포도원과 올리브 밭과 집을 오늘 당장 다 돌려주십시오. 돈과 곡식과 새 포도주와 올리브 기름을 꾸어 주고서 받는 비싼 이자도, 당장 돌려주십시오."
  2. 그들은 대답하였다. "모두 돌려주겠습니다. 그들에게서 아무것도 받지 않겠습니다. 말씀하신 대로 다 하겠습니다." 나는 곧 제사장들을 불러모으고, 그 자리에서 귀족들과 관리들에게 자기들이 약속한 것을 서약하게 하였다.
  3. 나는 또 나의 주머니를 털어 보이면서 말하였다. "이 서약을 지키지 않는 사람은, 하나님이 그 집과 재산을 이렇게 다 털어 버리실 것입니다. 그런 자는 털리고 털려서, 마침내 빈털터리가 되고 말 것입니다." 내가 이렇게 말하자, 거기에 모인 모든 사람이 "아멘!" 하며 주님을 찬양하였다. 백성은 약속을 지켰다.
  4. 나는 아닥사스다 왕 이십년에 유다 땅 총독으로 임명을 받아서, 아닥사스다 왕 삼십이년까지 십이 년 동안 총독으로 있었지만, 나와 나의 친척들은 내가 총독으로서 받아야 할 녹의 혜택을 받지 않았다.
  5. 그런데 나보다 먼저 총독을 지낸 이들은 백성에게 힘겨운 세금을 물리고, 양식과 포도주와 그 밖에 하루에 은 사십 세겔씩을 백성에게서 거두어들였다. 총독들 밑에 있는 사람들도 백성을 착취하였다. 그러나 나는 하나님이 두려워서도 그렇게 하지 않았다.
  1. Give back to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves and houses, and also the usury you are charging them--the hundredth part of the money, grain, new wine and oil."
  2. "We will give it back," they said. "And we will not demand anything more from them. We will do as you say." Then I summoned the priests and made the nobles and officials take an oath to do what they had promised.
  3. I also shook out the folds of my robe and said, "In this way may God shake out of his house and possessions every man who does not keep this promise. So may such a man be shaken out and emptied!" At this the whole assembly said, "Amen," and praised the LORD. And the people did as they had promised.
  4. Moreover, from the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, until his thirty-second year--twelve years--neither I nor my brothers ate the food allotted to the governor.
  5. But the earlier governors--those preceding me--placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God I did not act like that.
  1. 나는 성벽 쌓는 일에만 힘을 기울였다. 내 아랫사람들도 뜻을 모아서, 성벽 쌓는 일에만 마음을 썼다. 그렇다고 우리가 밭뙈기를 모은 것도 아니다.
  2. 나의 식탁에서는, 주변 여러 나라에서 우리에게로 온 이들 밖에도, 유다 사람들과 관리들 백오십 명이 나와 함께 먹어야 했으므로,
  3. 하루에 황소 한 마리와 기름진 양 여섯 마리, 날짐승도 여러 마리를 잡아야 하였다. 또 열흘에 한 차례씩은, 여러 가지 포도주도 모자라지 않게 마련해야만 하였다. 그런데 내가 총독으로서 마땅히 받아야 할 녹까지 요구하였다면, 백성에게 얼마나 큰 짐이 되었겠는가!
  4. "나의 하나님, 내가 이 백성을 위하여 하는 모든 일을 기억하시고, 은혜를 베풀어 주십시오."
  1. Instead, I devoted myself to the work on this wall. All my men were assembled there for the work; we did not acquire any land.
  2. Furthermore, a hundred and fifty Jews and officials ate at my table, as well as those who came to us from the surrounding nations.
  3. Each day one ox, six choice sheep and some poultry were prepared for me, and every ten days an abundant supply of wine of all kinds. In spite of all this, I never demanded the food allotted to the governor, because the demands were heavy on these people.
  4. Remember me with favor, O my God, for all I have done for these people.
 
  대적들의 음모(6:1-6:19)    
 
  1. 내가 성벽을 쌓아 올려 무너진 곳을 다 이었다는 말이 산발랏과 도비야와 아랍 사람 게셈과 그 밖의 우리 원수의 귀에까지 들어갔다. 그러나 그 때까지도 성문들의 문짝은 만들어 달지 못하고 있었는데,
  2. 산발랏과 게셈이 나에게 전갈을 보내 왔다. "오노 들판의 한 마을로 오시오. 거기서 좀 만납시다." 나는 그 말 속에 그들이 나를 해치려는 흉계가 있는 줄 알았으므로,
  3. 그들에게 사람을 보내어, 다음과 같이 대답하였다. "나는 지금 큰 공사를 하고 있으므로, 내려갈 수 없소. 어찌 이 일을 중단하고, 여기를 떠나서, 당신들에게로 내려가라는 말이오?"
  4. 그런데도 그들은 똑같은 것을 네 번씩이나 요구해 오고, 그 때마다 나도 똑같은 말로 대답하였다.
  5. 다섯 번째도, 산발랏이 심부름꾼을 시켜서 같은 내용을 보내 왔다. 심부름꾼이 가지고 온 편지는 봉하지 않았는데,
  1. When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it--though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates-
  2. Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: "Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono." But they were scheming to harm me;
  3. so I sent messengers to them with this reply: "I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?"
  4. Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.
  5. Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter
  1. 그 내용은 다음과 같다.당신과 유다 사람들이 반역을 모의하고 있고, 당신이 성벽을 쌓는 것도 그 때문이라는 소문이 여러 민족 사이에 퍼져 있소. 가스무도 이 사실을 확인하였소. 더구나 이 보고에 따르면, 당신은 그들의 왕이 되려고 하고 있으며,
  2. 예루살렘에서 당신을 왕으로 떠받들고서 '유다에 왕이 있다'고 선포하게 할 예언자들까지 이미 임명하였다는 말을 들었소. 이러한 일은 이제 곧 왕에게까지 보고될 것이오. 그러니 만나서 함께 이야기합시다.
  3. 나는 그에게 회답을 보냈다. "당신이 말한 것은 사실이 아니오. 당신이 마음대로 생각하여 꾸며낸 것일 뿐이오."
  4. 그들은 우리에게 으름장을 놓았다. 그렇게 하면 우리가 겁을 먹고 공사를 중단하여, 끝내 완성을 못할 것이라고 생각한 것이다."하나님, 나에게 힘을 주십시오!"
  5. 하루는 스마야를 만나려고 그의 집으로 찾아갔다. 그는 들라야의 아들이며, 므헤다벨의 손자인데, 문밖 출입을 하지 않고 있었다. 그가 나에게 말하였다. "하나님의 성전으로 갑시다. 성소 안으로 들어가서, 성소 출입문들을 닫읍시다. 자객들이 그대를 죽이러 올 것입니다. 그들이 밤에 와서, 반드시 그대를 죽일 것입니다."
  1. in which was written: "It is reported among the nations--and Geshem says it is true--that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king
  2. and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: 'There is a king in Judah!' Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us confer together."
  3. I sent him this reply: "Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head."
  4. They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed." But I prayed, "Now strengthen my hands."
  5. One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, "Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you--by night they are coming to kill you."
  1. 나는 대답하였다. "나 같은 사람더러 도망이나 다니란 말입니까? 나 같은 사람이 성소에 들어갔다가는 절대로 살아 나올 수 없습니다. 나는 그렇게는 못합니다."
  2. 나는 그 때에 그가 하나님이 보내신 예언자가 아니라는 것을 알았다. 그는 도비야와 산발랏에게 매수되어서, 나를 해치는 예언을 하였다.
  3. 그들이 스마야를 매수한 것은, 나에게 겁을 주어 성소를 범하는 죄를 짓게 하여서, 나의 명예를 떨어뜨리고 나를 헐뜯으려는 속셈이었다.
  4. "나의 하나님, 도비야와 산발랏이 한 일을 잊지 마십시오. 예언자 노아댜와 그 밖에 나에게 겁을 주려고 한 예언자들이 나에게 한 일을 잊지 마십시오."
  5. 성벽 공사는 오십이 일 만인 엘룰월 이십오일에 끝났다.
  1. But I said, "Should a man like me run away? Or should one like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!"
  2. I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
  3. He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.
  4. Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who have been trying to intimidate me.
  5. So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.
  1. 우리의 모든 원수와 주변의 여러 민족이 이 소식을 듣고, 완공된 성벽도 보았다. 그제서야 우리의 원수는, 이 공사가 우리 하나님의 도움으로 이루어진 것임을 깨달았다. 그래서 그들은 기가 꺾였다.
  2. 그 무렵에 유다의 귀족들이 도비야에게 편지를 자주 보내고, 도비야도 그들에게 편지를 보내곤 하였다.
  3. 도비야는 아라의 아들인 스가냐의 사위인데다가, 도비야의 아들 여호하난도 베레갸의 아들인 므술람의 딸과 결혼하였으므로, 유다에는 그와 동맹을 맺은 사람들이 많았다.
  4. 그들은, 내 앞에서도 서슴없이 도비야를 칭찬하고, 내가 하는 말은 무엇이든지 다 그에게 일러바쳤다. 그래서 도비야는 나에게 협박 편지를 여러 통 보내서 위협하였다.
  1. When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.
  2. Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them.
  3. For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah.
  4. Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.
