- 이 시기에 제자들이 점점 불어났다. 그런데 그리스 말을 하는 유대 사람들이 히브리 말을 하는 유대 사람들에게 불평을 터뜨렸다. 그것은 자기네 과부들이 날마다 구호 음식을 나누어 받는 일에 소홀히 여김을 받기 때문이었다.
- 그래서 열두 사도가 제자들을 모두 불러놓고 말하였다. "우리가 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 일은 제쳐놓고서 음식 베푸는 일에 힘쓰는 것은 좋지 못합니다.
- 그러니 형제자매 여러분, 신망이 있고 성령과 지혜가 충만한 사람 일곱을 여러분 가운데서 뽑으십시오. 그러면 그들에게 이 일을 맡기고,
- 우리는 기도하는 일과 말씀을 섬기는 일에 헌신하겠습니다."
- 모든 사람이 이 말을 좋게 받아들여서, 믿음과 성령이 충만한 사람인 스데반과 빌립과 브로고로와 니가노르와 디몬과 바메나와 안디옥 출신의 이방 사람으로서 유대교에 개종한 사람인 니골라를 뽑아서,

- And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.
- Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.
- Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
- But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.
- And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:

- 사도들 앞에 세웠다. 사도들은 기도하고, 그들에게 안수하였다.
- 하나님의 말씀이 계속 퍼져 나가서 예루살렘에 있는 제자들의 수가 부쩍 늘어가고, 제사장들 가운데서도 이 믿음에 순종하는 사람들이 많았다.
- 스데반은 은혜와 능력이 충만해서, 백성 가운데서 놀라운 일과 큰 기적을 행하고 있었다.
- 그 때에 구레네 사람과 알렉산드리아 사람과 길리기아와 아시아에서 온 사람으로 구성된, 이른바 리버디노 회당에 소속된 사람들 가운데에서 몇이 들고일어나서, 스데반과 논쟁을 벌였다.
- 그러나 스데반이 지혜와 성령으로 말하므로, 그들은 스데반을 당해 낼 수 없었다.

- Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.
- And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
- And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
- Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.
- And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

- 그러므로 그들은 사람들을 선동하여 "스데반이 모세와 하나님을 모독하는 말을 하는 것을 우리가 들었습니다" 하고 말하게 하였다.
- 그리고 백성과 장로들과 율법학자들을 부추기고, 스데반에게로 몰려가 그를 붙잡아서, 공의회로 끌고 왔다.
- 그리고 거짓 증인들을 세워서, 이렇게 말하게 하였다. "이 사람은 쉴새 없이 [이] 거룩한 곳과 율법을 거슬러 말을 합니다.
- 이 사람이, 나사렛 예수가 이 곳을 헐고 또 모세가 우리에게 전하여 준 규례를 뜯어 고칠 것이라고 말하는 것을, 우리가 들었습니다."
- 공의회에 앉아 있는 사람들이 모두 스데반을 주목하여 보니, 그 얼굴이 천사의 얼굴 같았다.

- Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.
- And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,
- And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:
- For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.
- And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.
