- 땔감이 다 떨어지면 불이 꺼지듯이, 남의 말을 잘하는 사람이 없어지면 다툼도 그친다.
- 숯불 위에 숯을 더하는 것과, 타는 불에 나무를 더하는 것과 같이, 다투기를 좋아하는 사람은 불난 데 부채질을 한다.
- 헐뜯기를 잘하는 사람의 말은 맛있는 음식과 같아서, 뱃속 깊은 데로 내려간다.
- 악한 마음을 품고서 말만 매끄럽게 하는 입술은, 질그릇에다가 은을 살짝 입힌 것과 같다.
- 남을 미워하는 사람은 입술로는 그렇지 않은 체하면서, 속으로는 흉계를 꾸민다.

- Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.
- As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

- 비록 다정한 말을 한다 하여도 그를 믿지 말아라. 그의 마음 속에는 역겨운 것이 일곱 가지나 들어 있다.
- 미운 생각을 교활하게 감추고 있다 하여도, 그 악의는 회중 앞에서 드러나기 마련이다.
- 함정을 파는 사람은 자기가 그 속에 빠지고, 돌을 굴리는 사람은 자기가 그 밑에 깔린다.
- 거짓말을 하는 혀는 흠 없는 사람의 원수이며, 아첨하는 사람은 자기의 신세를 망친다.
