- 땅에서 아주 작으면서도 가장 지혜로운 것이 넷이 있으니,
- 곧 힘이 없는 종류이지만 먹을 것을 여름에 예비하는 개미와,
- 약한 종류이지만 바위 틈에 자기 집을 짓는 오소리와,
- 임금은 없으나 떼를 지어 함께 나아가는 메뚜기와,
- 사람의 손에 잡힐 것 같은데도 왕궁을 드나드는 도마뱀이다.

- There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:
- The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer;
- The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;
- The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;
- The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces.

- 늠름하게 걸어 다니는 것이 셋, 위풍당당하게 걸어 다니는 것 넷이 있으니,
- 곧 짐승 가운데서 가장 강하여, 아무 짐승 앞에서도 물러서지 않는 사자와,
- 자랑스럽게 걷는 사냥개와, 숫염소와, 아무도 맞설 수 없는 임금이다.
- 네가 어리석어서 우쭐댔거나 악한 일을 도모하였거든, 너의 손으로 입을 막고 반성하여 보아라.
- 우유를 저으면 굳은 우유가 되고, 코를 비틀면 피가 나오듯, 화를 돋우면 분쟁이 일어난다.

- There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going:
- A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any;
- A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.
- If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth.
- Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.
