- 주님의 궤가 블레셋 사람의 지역에 머무른 지 일곱 달이 되었을 때의 일이다.
- 블레셋 사람들이 제사장들과 점쟁이들을 불러 놓고 물었다. "우리가 이스라엘 신의 궤를 어떻게 해야 좋겠습니까? 우리가 그것을 어떤 방법으로 제자리에 돌려보내야 하는지 알려 주십시오."
- 그들이 대답하였다. "이스라엘 신의 궤를 돌려보낼 때, 그냥 보내서는 안 됩니다. 반드시 그 신에게 속건제물을 바쳐야 합니다. 그러면 병도 나을 것이고, 그 신이 왜 여러분에게서 형벌을 거두지 않았는지도 알게 될 것입니다."
- 사람들이 다시 "그 신에게 무슨 속건제물을 바쳐야 좋겠습니까?" 하고 물었다. 그들이 대답하였다. "블레셋 통치자들의 수대로, 금으로 만든 악성 종양 모양 다섯 개와 금으로 만든 쥐의 모양 다섯 개를 바쳐야 합니다. 여러분과 여러분의 통치자들이 모두 똑같이 재앙을 당하였기 때문입니다.
- 그러므로 여러분은 악성 종양 모양과 이 땅을 해치는 쥐의 모양을 만들어서 바치고, 이스라엘의 신에게 예를 차리십시오. 그러면 그분이 혹시 여러분과 여러분의 신과 여러분의 땅을 내리치시던 손을 거두실지도 모릅니다.

- Now the ark of the LORD had been in the country of the Philistines seven months.
- And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, "What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us how we shall send it to its place."
- They said, "If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it empty; but you shall surely return to Him a guilt offering. Then you will be healed and it will be known to you why His hand is not removed from you."
- Then they said, "What shall be the guilt offering which we shall return to Him?" And they said, "Five golden tumors and five golden mice according to the number of the lords of the Philistines, for one plague was on all of you and on your lords.
- "So you shall make likenesses of your tumors and likenesses of your mice that ravage the land, and you shall give glory to the God of Israel; perhaps He will ease His hand from you, your gods, and your land.

- 왜 여러분은 이집트 백성과 이집트의 왕 바로처럼 고집을 부리려고 합니까? 이집트 사람이 이스라엘 사람을 가게 한 것은, 주님께서 그들에게 온갖 재앙을 내리신 뒤가 아니었습니까?
- 그러므로 이제 새로 수레를 하나 만들고, 아직 멍에를 메어 본 일이 없는 어미 소 두 마리를 끌어다가 그 수레에 메우고, 그 송아지들은 떼어서 집으로 돌려보내십시오.
- 그런 다음에, 주님의 궤를 가져다가 그 수레에 싣고, 여러분이 궤를 가져 온 허물을 벗으려면, 속건제물로 보내는, 금으로 만든 물건들은 작은 상자에 모두 담아 궤 곁에 두고, 그 소 두 마리가 가고 싶은 대로 수레를 끌고 가도록 하십시오.

- "Why then do you harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When He had severely dealt with them, did they not allow the people to go, and they departed?
- "Now therefore, take and prepare a new cart and two milch cows on which there has never been a yoke; and hitch the cows to the cart and take their calves home, away from them.
- "Take the ark of the LORD and place it on the cart; and put the articles of gold which you return to Him as a guilt offering in a box by its side. Then send it away that it may go.
- "Watch, if it goes up by the way of its own territory to Beth-shemesh, then He has done us this great evil But if not, then we will know that it was not His hand that struck us; it happened to us by chance."
- Then the men did so, and took two milch cows and hitched them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home.

- 수레에는 주님의 궤를 싣고, 금 쥐와 그들의 악성 종양 모양을 본떠서 만든 물건들도 상자에 담아 실었다.

- 레위 사람들이 수레에서 주님의 궤와 그 곁에 있는, 금으로 만든 물건들이 든 상자를 내려다가, 그 큰 바위 위에 올려 놓았다. 그 날 벳세메스 사람들은 주님께 번제물을 바치고, 다른 제물도 바쳤다.

- They put the ark of the LORD on the cart, and the box with the golden mice and the likenesses of their tumors.
- And the cows took the straight way in the direction of Beth-shemesh; they went along the highway, lowing as they went, and did not turn aside to the right or to the left. And the lords of the Philistines followed them to the border of Beth-shemesh.
- Now the people of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley, and they raised their eyes and saw the ark and were glad to see it.
- The cart came into the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite and stood there where there was a large stone; and they split the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD.
- The Levites took down the ark of the LORD and the box that was with it, in which were the articles of gold, and put them on the large stone; and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices that day to the LORD.

- 그 때에 벳세메스 사람들이 주님의 궤 속을 들여다보았기 때문에, 주님께서는 그 백성 가운데서 오만 칠십 명이나 쳐서 죽이셨다. 주님께서 그 백성을 그렇게 크게 치셨기 때문에, 그들은 슬피 울었다.
- 벳세메스 사람들이 말하였다. "이렇게 거룩하신 주 하나님을 누가 감히 모실 수 있겠는가? 이 궤를 어디로 보내어 우리에게서 떠나가게 할까?"

- When the five lords of the Philistines saw it, they returned to Ekron that day.
- These are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned for a guilt offering to the LORD: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron;
- and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fortified cities and of country villages The large stone on which they set the ark of the LORD is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite.
- He struck down some of the men of Beth-shemesh because they had looked into the ark of the LORD. He struck down of all the people, 50,070 men, and the people mourned because the LORD had struck the people with a great slaughter.
- The men of Beth-shemesh said, "Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God? And to whom shall He go up from us?"

- So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, "The Philistines have brought back the ark of the LORD; come down and take it up to you."
