- 은을 캐는 광산이 있고, 금을 정련하는 제련소도 있다.
- 철은 흙에서 캐어 내며, 구리는 광석을 녹여서 얻는다.
- 광부들은 땅 속을 깊이 파고 들어가서, 땅 속이 아무리 캄캄해도 그 캄캄한 구석 구석에서 광석을 캐어 낸다.
- 사람이 사는 곳에서 멀리 떨어진 곳, 사람의 발이 가 닿지 않는 곳에, 사람들은 갱도를 판다. 줄을 타고 매달려서 외롭게 일을 한다.
- 땅 위에서는 먹거리가 자라지만, 땅 속은 같은 땅인데도 용암으로 들끓고 있다.

- "Surely there is a mine for silver And a place where they refine gold.
- "Iron is taken from the dust, And copper is smelted from rock.
- "Man puts an end to darkness, And to the farthest limit he searches out The rock in gloom and deep shadow.
- "He sinks a shaft far from habitation, Forgotten by the foot; They hang and swing to and fro far from men.
- "The earth, from it comes food, And underneath it is turned up as fire.

- 바위에는 사파이어가 있고, 돌가루에는 금이 섞여 있다.
- 솔개도 거기에 이르는 길을 알지 못하고, 매의 날카로운 눈도 그 길을 찾지 못한다.
- 겁 없는 맹수도 거기에 발을 들여놓은 일이 없고, 무서운 사자도 그 곳을 밟아 본 적이 없다.
- 사람은 굳은 바위를 깨고, 산을 그 밑 뿌리까지 파들어 간다.
- 바위에 굴을 뚫어서, 각종 진귀한 보물을 찾아낸다.

- "Its rocks are the source of sapphires, And its dust contains gold.
- "The path no bird of prey knows, Nor has the falcon's eye caught sight of it.
- "The proud beasts have not trodden it, Nor has the fierce lion passed over it.
- "He puts his hand on the flint; He overturns the mountains at the base.
- "He hews out channels through the rocks, And his eye sees anything precious.

- 강의 근원을 찾아내고, 땅에 감추어진 온갖 보화를 들추어낸다.
- 그러나 지혜는 어디에서 얻으며, 슬기가 있는 곳은 어디인가?
- 지혜는 사람에게서 발견되는 것이 아니다. 사람은 어느 누구도 지혜의 참 가치를 알지 못한다.
- 깊은 바다도 "나는 지혜를 감추어 놓지 않았다" 하고 말한다. 넓은 바다도 "나는 지혜를 감추어 놓지 않았다" 하고 말한다.
- 지혜는 금을 주고 살 수 없고, 은으로도 그 값을 치를 수 없다.

- "He dams up the streams from flowing, And what is hidden he brings out to the light.
- "But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?
- "Man does not know its value, Nor is it found in the land of the living.
- "The deep says, 'It is not in me'; And the sea says, 'It is not with me.'
- "Pure gold cannot be given in exchange for it, Nor can silver be weighed as its price.

- 지혜는 오빌의 금이나 값진 루비나 사파이어로도 그 값을 치를 수 없다.
- 지혜는 금보다 값진 것, 금잔이나 값진 유리잔보다 더 값진 것이다.
- 지혜의 값은 산호보다, 수정보다 비싸다. 지혜를 얻는 것은 진주를 가진 것보다 값지다.
- 에티오피아의 토파즈로도 지혜와 비교할 수 없고, 정금으로도 지혜의 값을 치를 수 없다.
- 그렇다면 지혜는 어디에서 오며, 슬기가 있는 곳은 어디인가?

- "It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, In precious onyx, or sapphire.
- "Gold or glass cannot equal it, Nor can it be exchanged for articles of fine gold.
- "Coral and crystal are not to be mentioned; And the acquisition of wisdom is above that of pearls.
- "The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, Nor can it be valued in pure gold.
- "Where then does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding?

- 모든 생물의 눈에 숨겨져 있고, 공중의 새에게도 감추어져 있다.
- 멸망의 구덩이와 죽음도 지혜를 두고 이르기를 "지혜라는 것이 있다는 말은 다만 소문으로만 들었을 뿐이다" 하고 말한다.
- 그러나 하나님은, 지혜가 있는 곳에 이르는 길을 아신다. 그분만이 지혜가 있는 곳을 아신다.
- 오직 그분만이 땅 끝까지 살피실 수 있으며, 하늘 아래에 있는 모든 것을 보실 수 있다.
- 그분께서 저울로 바람의 강약을 달아 보시던 그 때에, 물의 분량을 달아 보시던 그 때에,

- "Thus it is hidden from the eyes of all living And concealed from the birds of the sky.
- "Abaddon and Death say, 'With our ears we have heard a report of it.'
- "God understands its way, And He knows its place.
- "For He looks to the ends of the earth And sees everything under the heavens.
- "When He imparted weight to the wind And meted out the waters by measure,

- 비가 내리는 규칙을 세우시던 그 때에, 천둥 번개가 치는 길을 정하시던 그 때에,
- 바로 그 때에 그분께서, 지혜를 보시고, 지혜를 칭찬하시고, 지혜를 튼튼하게 세우시고, 지혜를 시험해 보셨다.
- 그런 다음에, 하나님은 사람에게 말씀하셨다. "주님을 경외하는 것이 지혜요, 악을 멀리하는 것이 슬기다."
