- 아버지를 조롱하며 어머니를 멸시하여, 순종하지 않는 사람의 눈은, 골짜기의 까마귀에게 쪼이고 새끼 독수리에게 먹힐 것이다.
- 기이한 일이 셋, 내가 정말 이해할 수 없는 일이 넷이 있으니,
- 곧 독수리가 하늘을 날아간 자취와, 뱀이 바위 위로 지나간 자취와, 바다 위로 배가 지나간 자취와, 남자가 여자와 함께 하였던 자취이다.
- 간음한 여자의 자취도 그러하니, 먹고도 안 먹었다고 입을 씻듯이 "나는 아무런 악행도 한 일이 없다" 한다.
- 세상을 뒤흔들 만한 일이 셋, 세상이 감당하지 못할 일이 넷이 있으니,

- The eye that mocks a father And scorns a mother, The ravens of the valley will pick it out, And the young eagles will eat it.
- There are three things which are too wonderful for me, Four which I do not understand:
- The way of an eagle in the sky, The way of a serpent on a rock, The way of a ship in the middle of the sea, And the way of a man with a maid.
- This is the way of an adulterous woman: She eats and wipes her mouth, And says, "I have done no wrong."
- Under three things the earth quakes, And under four, it cannot bear up:

- 곧 종이 임금이 되는 것과, 어리석은 자가 배불리 먹는 것과,
- 꺼림을 받는 여자가 시집을 가는 것과, 여종이 그 안주인의 자리를 이어받는 것이다.

- Under a slave when he becomes king, And a fool when he is satisfied with food,
- Under an unloved woman when she gets a husband, And a maidservant when she supplants her mistress.
